Not like any other game on the playstation!

Civilization II is not for everybody. Those who live for the shoot-em-ups and 3-D fighting genre games should stay away from this one! However, for the rest of us, this game is a must buy! There is no ther game like it on the Playstation! Running a city from 4000 BC to 2020 AD is no easy task. At first, the game seems unmanageable. The instruction book is large and written in tiny print. It comes with a "helpful" poster that looks more like a high-school Physics flow chart or something. There are so many menus and options once you play the game it seems overwhelming. Don't be discouraged! This is an on-the-job-training type game. Load it and just start playing and learn by trial and error. I played for 4 or 5 hours before I really began to feel like I had a handle on things. (Hint: make sure you irriagate and build roads near your cities as soon as you can!) The game flow is decent but does get long as the game progresses. The advisor function is helpful at first but gets repetitive quickly. The Beginner Tutorial is a must for your first game; it slows things down a bit but you'll learn alot from this feature! You can choose to run your society as a Despotism or you can have a Democracy (or 6 other forms of government!). You can tax your citizens heads off and give them plenty of luxuries or tax them heavily and build a powerful and mean army. You can build great Wonders of the World or concentrate more on scientific discoveries. You would be amazed how engrossing this gets! Coupled with trying to stave off barbaric hoards, going to war with other societies and trying to keep the peace with your allies, you will lose plenty of sleep! Nothing is perfect however, and this game does have some flaws. As the game progresses, the map will become cluttered and it will be hard to distinguish between units. Some of the wording on the menus is a little fuzzy and hard to read at times. Also, there are so many options in this game, sometimes it seems overwhelming and you wish the game would take control of SOMETHING! The background music also tends to get old quick. These drawbacks, however, are easily overlooked and do not detract form the gameplay. This is a title unlike any other for this system. It will keep you engrossed for hours and days and, unlike many titles, will keep you THINKING! This is a must buy for any serious gamer!

this is one great game

This is probably the best and most addictive game I have ever played. Once you start playing and get a feel of the game, you can watch the hours fly by. The graphics may not be that great, but the gameplay is so tremendous that you can deal with it. The replay value is probably the best part of the game since every time you start a new game a totally new world is created with different tribes who each have their own characteristics making each game brand new. It is nice to play a game where you are not always playing on the same board and know the entire map before you even start playing. This game is highly recommended to any person who has the time to spare and loves strategy games.

The Best Playstation Game (Period)

I love this game. (My wife hates it, because I can't stop playing it.) I have played at the Warrior level. I have played at the Deity level. It is great. I feel great when I play it. After playing for an evening, I can say that I've conquered vast empires and built world wonders, or created the greatest civilization on the planet and landed men on the moon! It has the best replay value of any game I've ever played and is by far the most intelligent game I have seen on the Playstation. There are many ways it could be improved, despite its greatness, and I am always looking to see if Activision will convert another of its PC Civ games to the Playstation format. If they came out with one for the Playstation 2, I would buy the Playstation 2 in a heartbeat. (Hint, hint.)

Bad translation from computer version

I played the computer game on a friends computer and thought it would be as good on the PSX. WRONG! This game was a terrible translation. The graphics are bad. The speed is terrible. But it is strangly addictive.

The most fun, most addictive game I've ever played. It does get slow at higher levels, but it's worth it when you can destroy everyone.

my reason for owning a Playstation

Let me start by saying that this game is infinitely replayable. It always has something new to challenge you and doesn't back down. With its multiple levels of play(from cheiftain to diety) you can continue to up the ante even after getting a great score on one level. The true nitty gritty level of involvement is what I like about this game. It is all up to you...whether to build a bank or an aquaduct, whether to crush your neighbor or give them some help up the evolutionary ladder. The only downfall I see in this game is that it is very time consuming. On the up side, you can have a snack in between turns and not miss anything. The graphics aren't top notch, but they don't need to be. You don't really need to see exactly what that settlers unit looks like and if you want a close up view of your cities, it gives you that option. To sum up...this game has a ton of options that make it a joy to play over and over and over...just don't plan on seeing daylight for a while.

One of the Greatest Games Ever!

I have owned this game for over two years. I continually play this game over and over again. It's never the same game and you can shut-off alot of the extra's unlike alot of games. So if you are playing it for the hundreth time it can move alot faster and you don't have to sit through lenghty clips. You do need half a brain to play this game! It is a strategy game after all.

This is one of my "favorite" games in my library. Sure, it does have it`s cons but the pro`s more than make up for that. The different ways you can set the game up is great.Once you get the hang of it, the in-game menus will help you with almost anything you need. This is one of those games where you start a game and before you know it, its the next day!! If you like this genere, this is a must have game.I played on the super nintendo and now I have it on the PSX and it keeps getting better..The replay value of this game is great.Besides the different set-ups at the begining, you can change the nature of the game by changing your type of government.Democratic, Republic, Monarchy, Communism, all have their own guidelines on gameplay. Do you want a warring country a scientific country, the choice is yours. If you want a game thats not finished in one sitting or you don`t like constantly pushing buttons, this is the game for you..One of the few games where you can eat dinner and conquer the world at the same time...

My boyfriend and I fight over who gets to play the game... We'll play it for days at a time with NO break. We even needed a new CD since we played the first one so much!
