Bad translation from computer version

I played the computer game on a friends computer and thought it would be as good on the PSX. WRONG! This game was a terrible translation. The graphics are bad. The speed is terrible. But it is strangly addictive.

Fun But Gets Boring

The game is great from the start, but has short-lived replay fun. The characters that you interact with (your advisors) are fun to see and listen to, especially the Elvis character. It is also fun to see how they evolve over the years. But game play is slow between years and can even put you to sleep at times. The graphics are not all that great either. But if you are a fan of Civilization you will enjoy this version (at least for a little while.)

Definitley an Intelligent game - but painfully slow moving

This is not a game for the impacient. Normally, If I dig into a game I know will take a long time solve, it has to motivate me with an interesting story line, music and or graphics (an RPG like FFVII or VIII for instance) However, If you are interested in a complex and super challenging strategy game, this may be for you. Too bad they never made Age of the Empires for PSX, and warcraft psx is really hard to find!!

Slow but Addicting

I really loved this game, that is until I got to the higher levels. It get sooo slow when you get into the middle to the end of the game. If you love strategy you will love this game but keep a book nearby or start on those dishes while you are waiting for your turn.

Not as good as PC version

Let me start out by saying that I am a huge Civilization fan...but....the Playstation version does not hold a candle to the PC version. The PS screen is cloudy and difficult to see, especially your own cities growth numbers. It's difficult to determine whose winning a battle as the stamina bar is impossible to see. My absolute biggest problem w/ the PS version is not having "auto" control over settlers. On the PC game you can set settlers to auto so they go around building roads and mining etc.. You have to do it all yourself on playstation. Do you know how boring it is to build 5,000 roads w/ 20 settlers?? Some people want to micromanage every aspect, but there is zero strategy to be gained from controlling settlers yourself, zero. Why take this option away? I think this explains why they never made another version for the playstation. Civilization is a game that apparently must be played on a computer.

O.K., Now What?

you can become king of the world!!!

I give this game a bit over 3 and a half stars. I've never played the PC version but was turned onto this version by Civ devotees. In the game you contol a civilization from 4000 BC-2020 AD and make decisions based on how you want to your empire to grow (much like others reviewers have said). Most likely you are familiar with the basics so I'll cut to the quick. Sports and strategy games are my favorites. They just entertain me more than mindless kill frenzies (although GTA is a truly entertaining series). This game is a fine stategy game and I will some day check out the (suposedly superior)PC version because I enjoyed it so much. That said, the graphics border on being quite lame and at times (especially when other empires are integrated as you move along) game play seems to slow to a halt. You can also master the lower difficulty levels in no time and the whole thing could become boring if you just need to see blood and crash cars. Yet, there is something about this game that keeps bringing me back and I don't even know what it is. It can be great fun (especially with a few cd's in the changer to distract you from the length of the game) and it is one of the best games I've ever played. Why??? All I know is that it's more addictive than chocolate covered crack and a few dozen times more entertaining(and healthy). I'm currently trying to ween myself off of it because it can just eat up the hours. Maybe there will be an improved version for the PS2 that can rob me of even more of my free time. (There is a cheat that allows you unlimited cashflow: name a city _CasH and enter the H while pressing the R1 button at the same time. Try it without the cheat for a while,as the stuggle is much of the fun. Then use the cheat to make the rest of the world your plaything.)

OK

Civ II is undoubtedly one of the best games on the market for the Playstation. It's fantabulistic for any one who really digs on strategy games...my advice to you crazy couch dicatators is to run, not walk, to buy this game. The only reason I give this game a 4 star rating instead of five is it's loading time. We all know the Playstation takes a long time to load anyway, but this game takes a REALLY long time. Especially on the large map mode against 5 other civilizations. In the time it takes the game to set up between your turns you can run to the store, make lasagna, call that friend you haven't talked to in four years, and catch up on all of the work you've been procrastinating. However, this did not turn me off to the game. What ends up happening is that you spend 12 hours at the time playing it. It envelopes your life in it's addictive clutches. You find yourself saying: "Sorry, honey, can't make it to that movie, I've got to help the Babylonians take down the Egyptians!" or "Can't make it to work today, sir, I've just developed Gunpowder and the Cathaginians are willing to go to war for the secret!" or "No, sweetie, I'm not going to class today, negotiations with the American diplomat didn't go so well." So, if you ever have a week to blow, lock yourself in a room with some Cheez-Its and Coca-Cola and go to town (oh, and try to get in at least 2 hours of sleep a day...sleep deprivation does not a good dictator/monarch/prime minister/premier/president make.)
