A Nearly Lost, Forgotten Shooter

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 4 / 4
Date: September 09, 2005
Author: Amazon User

There aren't too many horizontal shooters (or SHMUPs, if you prefer) out there that involve submarines and underwater battles outside of a few particular NES titles and some short segments in the Metal Slug series. However, out of all of the other sub horizontal shooters out there, this one is pretty much on the top of its game.

Pretty much a budget title from the word "go", In the Hunt is a port of the arcade classic for the PS1. While its graphics are certainly outdated (they aren't going to win any awards) and the game is lacking in bonuses (what you see is what you get), the gameplay is that of a typical shooter from the mid 90's: fast, furious, and sometimes unrelentingly brutal. You have your main torpedos (fire forward) as well as missiles that you can fire upwards. One of the more interesting aspects about this particular shooter is that death almost constantly rains from above, leading in some very tense moments. Also, with changing tides, you usually have very little space in which to manuever, so there is even more challenge there.

Is it worth picking up? Most definitely, especially for less than $10. There's not much to the release itself but it is nearly arcade perfect. Just beware of the loading times, though. They tend to be a bit on the long side. Also, be sure to pick this one up if you are a fan of shooters. If you're just looking for a PS1 game to kill time, you may be interested as well, but I feel that only SHMUP fans are really going to get some enjoyment out of this particular title.
