Very basic graphics, but this scrolling game is a ton of fun and worth picking up.

This game is a great 2D side scroller. I am not a huge fan of this style of games, but this one in particular is great. The parts that you have to do platform jumping is forgivable since you can jump into a tank and blast away your enemies, which makes up for a little platform jumping.

Wicked 2d Contra style action!

After playing the import copy of this game I would just like to let the world know what a fantastic 2d action shooter this game is. If your a fan of great colorful 2d animation, buy Metal Slug, buy it NOW! Not only can you ride in tank and a plane but you get to also ride a camel! A CAMEL!! How messed up is that? Anyways if your a fan of great control, and games that are actually fun, this is for you.

Awesome!

And people thought 2d was dead....

SNK have made many masterpieces, Metal Slug, Metal Slug2, King of Fighters 94-2000, and the Fatal Fury series. None of these games are 3d, why? because SNK obviously believe that beautifully hand drawn, and wonderfully playable games are better than either blocky 3d graphics or all graphics no gameplay games. Metal Slug X is no exception to SNK's line of Metal Slugs. The graphics are absolutely fantastic! I just saw a review saying the graphics are very basic, tjis person has no idea. It's 2d, so what! There is so much detail thrown into the backdrops alone that you could play the game over and over just to see new stuff in the scenery. The characters are also fantastic, they have fluid motion and lots of detail. The enemy soldiers have so many little animations, they knfe/gun/grenade you and then point and laugh until you drop down again with a Machinegun, at which point they scream (with a true look of fear on thier faces) and try to run away. The bosses are massive and truly impressive like the battleship on tank tracks, after destroying the guns the front of the ship opens to reveal a MASSIVE GUN which lauches shells the size of your character! It then EJECTS THE SHELL CASE!

Enough on the graphics, theres great platforming in there too. There's also a variety of vehicles. The tank, the Plane, the Jumping mech thing, and the Camel (used for mowing arabs down in the desert). These coupled with the fast paced gameplay and the chaos on screen make for an awesome game. And if you complete it you'll love the ending.

There's the usual extras too, the art gallery and the extra missions. SO BUY IT, NOW!

2D Gaming at it's best

When I first played Metal Slug 1, I was blown away. 2 player action is even better, but Metal Slug was missing something. The weapons? No, we had that; shotguns, machineguns, grenades, all is accounted for on that area. Missions? 6 was plenty, with action filled streets, underground passages, and enemy bases for you to infiltrate. But it was the lack of enemies. In Metal Slug one, you had one certain enemy, which were all sorts of army infantry. In Metal Slug X, you have Arabs with swords, mummies, explosive humanoids, and even ALIENS! Yes, MSX is quite a change from the old MS, but its a good change. New vehicles have been added... a camel, to start, is a good way to get around Arab streets. A camel, with machine guns attached on its sides, is a good way to get around Arab streets; while at the same time blasting away anything in your path. You get to fly a plane, also, which I just got addicted to. Aside of the radical vehicles and the new enemies, is your status changes. If a mummy breathes its purple fumes on you, you are instantly turned into a woddling, slow mummy. Dont expect to have the speed to run away when your a mummy, it just wont happen! Another hilarious status change that can occur to you is overeating. Yes, overeating. If you pick up too many apples, fruits, hams, etc. etc. etc. you will turn into a huge, out of shape version of your current character. In this mode, your ammunition even changes. From skinny bullets to fat bullets. From skinny bombs to fat bombs. And you guessed it, your knife is replaced with a dining fork. Make sure to lay off the extra cholesterol. Perhaps the coolest feature of MS2 is the ending, if you reach it. I will not spoil the ending, its for you to find out. But I guarantee you that if you miss it, it may change the way you think about Metal Slug forever!

This Game Rocks!

I am a great fan of the Metal Slug series and I think they totally rock! But Metal Slug X surpasses all other titles, I mean can you find anything more fun than mowing down arabs with a machine gun clad camel! I think not! If you are wondering about buying this then wonder no more, buy it! buy it now! I'm sure you wont regret it!!

Awesome stuff but too short.

The game is great. Very fast and furious, non-stop action with great animation and humor. But what bugs me is that it's just too short. Altough you get bonus missions when you finish the game... it's not enough. I finished the game plenty of times BUT I WANT MORE !!! But for a normal player it will probably enough. Awesome game, buy it.

Metal Slug X: SNK's answer to the Contra series

Metal Slug X is basically a re-release of Metal Slug 2 that originally appeared on the Neo Geo console system. The Metal Slug games play very similar to Konami's classic Contra series. The gameplay is somewhat linear, but undeniably fun. You run around gunning down lots of enemies on a 2D, multi-platform playing field while picking up power ups and saving captured soldiers, ect. The graphics are all hand-drawn and are skillfully animated (each enemy has it's own humorous death sequence)with plenty of color and minimal slow-down during loads of on-screen activity. The music and sound effects are a bit muffled though, but one can't expect stellar sound quality from a port of an old cartridge game anyway. Replay-wise, Metal Slug X provides a few interesting mini-games after you've beaten it, but as with all games of this type, playing the 2-player arcade mode with a friend is the only reason you will want to beat it over and over. If you are a fan of the old classics like Contra and Guerrilla War (for the original NES), you will love Metal Slug X. I would advise those who are less acquainted with the earlier days of gaming to rent it first.

A fun rehash, but little more

Metal Slug X is, at first look, an amazing side-scroller where one or two players take control of soldiers who move through six missions, shooting and blasting basically everything in sight. The game is amazingly fun for an hour, but after the game is beaten (with infinite continues, I might add,) scrutiny comes into play.

The grpahics are amazingly detailed, and every sprite in the game shows a variety of emotions that add a wonderful comedic style to the game. Soldiers laugh and gasp in disbelief, tanks explode and reveal mechanical innards, and the player's character is always willing to laugh at his or her handy-work. Of course, the graphics are nearly identical to Metal Slug's, with no improvement. Also, when enemies are shot, a white liquid sprays out of their body in place of blood, a paltry attempt at censorship.

Gameplay remains the same. The hero fires weapons picked up along the way, throws grenades, crawls, runs, jumps, and pilots four different types of "Metal Slugs" (a tank, a camel, a jet, and a humanoid tank); all in attempts to beat an evil terrorist leader. Nothing new, but still fun.

The problem comes in if you've played Metal Slug 1. This game is not anywhere near as fun. The first had truly unique challenges, more difficult bosses, and more interesting levels. The sequel throws the player into semi-interesting levels that seem to do nothing more than take up space (now we're in a sewer fighting wall-crawling aliens. Wowwee!!) MSX does deserve credit though: they do add a some new enemies like mummies and aliens and gives two status changes (becoming very fat, which makes your bullets change, but nothing else, and becoming a mummy yourself, where you move very slowly and have limited control), and of course there are the few new Metal Slugs, but that's about it. The game uses mostly old enemies, including a few old bosses and mini-bosses.

Metal Slug X is fun, but little new. Special bonus mini-missions, add little replay value, and you should probably consider renting this before you buy it.
