Not as bad as the reviews would indicate

This game has a tough road to climb. After a dismal previous effort (High Heat 2000), and good efforts from both MLB 2001, and Triple Play 2001 this year, this one just might get buried. But don't let the press fool you on this one, it's got substance.

First off, the graphics ARE subpar. That much is true. Either of the other two baseball offerings for 2001 will give you better visuals. BUT, if there's one genre of game where graphics are negotiable, it's a sports game, and especially a baseball game.

And while we're at it, no, this game bears VERY little resemblance to its PC cousin. No amazing roster management, no fully customizable renaming feature, though this is to be expected. Rarely do console games match their PC brethren in statistical/roster depth.

Now for the good stuff: the actual gameplay here is stellar. No more do you have to watch a batted ball take a familiar routine path to a certain spot on the field. In HH, the ball gets sprayed everywhere to all fields, simulating the real game better than any of its competitors. And fielding is accurate enough that balls hit to the wall result in the extra base hits that rarely happen in other titles. Pitch selection is diverse, with each pitcher having his particular arsenal of pitches. Batting is solid, along with baserunning.

Games flow at a nice pace, with just enough stats shown for flavor. Additionally, a few rare glimpses into the sport occur every once in a while. Case in point: I was playing as the Mets at Tropicana Field against the D-Rays, I smacked a homerun to right off of Chad Ogea, then I see the ball apparently come back out of the stands onto the field. I immediately thought, "must be a game glitch," then the announcer says "The ball has been thrown back onto the field!" It was great! The fans were jacked! I couldn't believe it, 3DO had enough insight to replicate the likes of the Bleacher Bums at Wrigley by having angry fans throw my homerun ball back on the field!

It's little things like that that will make this game a winner, even if it only manages to gain a smaller cult following. High Heat 2001 won't blow you out of your seat, but the fun-factor and level of realism are more than enough to warrant a purchase.

Don't waste your money

I can't believe I actually bought this game... I played for 20 minutes and it is on it's way back to the store today. People say that this game is the most realistic, but I didn't have the heart to play it long enough to find out. The graphics are the worst I have seen for a playstation baseball game, and the gameplay is terrible. Don't let anyone talk you into this game. I honestly laughed out loud while playing, it was that bad. I can name at least 4 old Nintendo baseball games that were better that this, and actually had better graphics.

Ok look this game is fun but dumb I know that didn't make much sense but it is. They say it's the best baseball game it's not! At least not on the Playstation. I first saw this game at a friends house on his PC it was great you can make your own Custom League and Name divisions and mix up the teams. They also had each teams AAA ballclubs to A ballclubs. They game was great you could negotiate trades, and other stuff. So I thought it would be the same on the Playstation. I was wrong. The rosters were a drag you couldn't make your own league and the graphics were bad. So if you are gonna buy this game get it for the PC! not the Plastation!

While I will agree with the first review that the graphics could be better, once you get over the fact that they aren't TP2001 caliber, you will realize that you have before you the best baseball game ever made as far as a simulation goes. This is like the real thing, right up to pitch counts. If you want a home run derby, pick up TP2001. If you want the good old fashioned game of baseball, try this on for size.

I hear a lot of people most of them reviwers talk about this game very harsh I think this does a great job of captureing the feel of MLB baseball the graphics arent great but the gameplay is dead on its better than TP2001 its better than MLB2001 if you like simulation and tight gameplay this game is for you ps ITS SO REEEALLLL

Sammy Sosa High Heat Baseball 2001 is a very good game. It is very fun and enjoyable. The graphics are not the greatest but who cares? When you are having fun playing it you kinda forget about the graphics. The gameplay is awesome and I also like how it has a boxscore after every single game in the season for every team! If you like baseball I would fully recommend this game. High Heat hits a grand slam!

High Heat 2001 comes up short in a lot of ways (graphics, sound) but it's fast-paced (unlike MLB 2001) and realistic (unlike Triple Play 2001). If only the three could get together. A feature I liked about the PC version was the ability to chose your field no matter what team you were playing with (i.e. the Whitesox in Enron). Since, Comiskey is a weak stadium it would have been nice to move your team to various parks (even mid-season, game to game).

Let me begin by saying that I have never given a product a 5 star rating. People abuse the star system. You have to rate a product as compared to the best of it's kind. To date, High Heat Baseball 2001 is the best baseball game I have ever encountered. I had to cut a half star for a few flaws that the game has, as does every game. The game graphics are decent. One of the main problems is when a team executes a sacrifice fly. The ball can be hit to the shallow outfield with a legitimate chance of a play at the plate. You try to throw to the plate and it goes to the cutoff man EVERY time, allowing the run to score. It it too easy to steal bases. Roger Cedeno has 85 SB in less than half a season. Enough said. Sometimes when you hit a ball to the wall, it looks as if the ball went over the fence, but wait, the outfielder miraculously catches the ball without a jump over the fence, making the gameplay LOOK somewhat shady. The commentary is horrible. With the combination of the commentary and the difficult gameplay the first time you play it, I thought it was going to be a flop. However, I got better at the game and got use to the commentary. Enough about the negative. The realistic feel of the gameplay is enough to overpower the bad and then some. All of the statistics are realistic. No player hits 95 homeruns with 215 RBI's in a season. (See Triple Play 2001). The fielding action is the best ever, along with the pitcher/batter interface. You can actually tell if it's going to be a ball or a strike, unlike that of the competitors. Another important factor that makes HH 2001 my first selection is the competitiveness of the AI. You actually get beat just like all of the teams in the pros. My winning percentage is right at .580, completely realistic. This game did not get the credit it deserved because 3DO is not in the spotlight. TP and MLB series are the mainstream games, and also the worst and most overrated baseball games I have ever played. If you want realistic gameplay and some competitive AI, go with the HH 2001. I just purchased a PS2. With all of the great games already out for the playstation 2, I can't seem to pry myself from the awesome HH 2001. Can't wait for HH 2002 for the PS2.

Not Much Better Than TP 2001

After the failure of Triple Play 2001, I got this game, hoping it would be better. It wasn't. The graphics are lackluster, and if you don't concentrate on every single pitch, the other team will most likely hit a home run. Also, when a fielder has the ball, he throws it to the first baseman instead of the pitcher. That's one thing they really need to fix.

Sammy Sosa High Heat Baseball 2001 is a BLAST, literally. It has splendid graphics and when it comes to gameplay it is very lifelike. I got this game and quit playing it for a month because I couldn't hit off the pitcher. If you want a game that is life like and chalenging then this game is for you. It is hard to get into the groove and controls of the game at first because there are so many controls, but if you get the hang of it then you can't put it down. Since I have picked it up and tried to play it (2 months ago) I could not put it down. I think that they make the CPU (computer) a little too hard to beat but if you practise then you can beat them. I beat the CPU 45% of the time. Also if you are having troubble then try this and if it works spread the word because I just found this out 2 weeks ago: 1. Choose the Angles 2. give the closer 100% fastball and 1 other pitcher on your team 3. take the other pitcher that you have given the 100% fastball and throw a few fastballs and see their speed 4. Bring out the closer and throw his fastball a couple of times too 5. compare the speeds The normal pither's fastball sould be 98MPH and the closer's sould be 102MPH. If you look in the editing screen it will say that the closer has more throwing stength/pitching power than normal pitchers.
So if you are going to turn down this game because it is hard then just try what I said and practise. ALOT
