Not what you expect

I purchased this game because I believed it to be similar to Crash Team Racing and because I had read reviews that it was fun, addictive, etc. The graphics are great. I found the characters very hard to steer (you get light, medium and heavy characters to choose from)and I tried several. My dual shock controller was no help (I think I actually did better with the regular controller), which is odd for a game released in 2000. It needs work. I suggest to anyone considering this game - stick with Crash Team Racing - a lot more fun without as much frustration.

Great game, though difficult

Speed Punks is a good game. It beats CTR on so many levels. Let me explain. The graphics are better, weapons more important, shortcuts and level design play a crucial part in the difference of first or last place. It's just more fun. I beat CTR 100% and it was fun, but that doesn't disguise the fact that it was too easy, and the difficulty wasn't an enjoyable challenge. Speed Punks is different. The difficulty is VERY HIGH. If you are not willing to spend a reasonable amount of time losing and getting up and trying again, then this game is not for you. However, if you enjoy a challenge, this game delivers. You'll find yourself coming back for more, time and time again.

I'm new to playstation and this was a great starter game. I can't stop playing. There are 6 racers to choose from, my favorite so far is Monica, and then several different courses. You can do a single track or a tournament and much more. I highly recommend this game to new users. It would probably be too simple of a game to those who are more familar with the system though. If you liked Nintendo's Mario Kart, you'll love Speed Punks.

Exellent, but Way Too Difficult

Speed Punks is great, but it is too hard. The turns are too, especially in the hard level. Also, in the hard level the last 2 races, Grand Rapids and Sunset Isle they are almost impossible to win. The easy and medium levels are okay but the track designs in the hard level are outrageously stupid. Everything else is great. I really like it when you can challenge the bonus characters in order to be able to use them. They are Cosworth, the dog of Monty, Tetsuo, the Japanese guy and Beemer, the robot racer of Brains. There are 6 mode where you can race. They are tournament, single race, time attack, vs., multiplayer and bonus.

Delightful kart-racing madness!

Let me start off by saying that this is one of the best kart racing games for PS1 ever made. The characters are creative, each with their own personality, (although their physical features don't vary much). And you gotta love soarin' down the track at 200 mph. Not to mention the arsenal of weapons and traps. And perhaps the best feature of the game, the shortcuts! There is a shortcut in all but one track! (After all, the motto IS "Whatever it takes to win"). Plus, hidden bonus characters to keep the player interested. The only down-side of this game is that sometimes it can seem far too difficult. For example, the final boss race, which I, myself, haven't beaten yet.

I Recently bought this game and it's Great. U get 2 pick from 6 different racers with their own look and stats, and there are some secret characters that u can unlock 2.The graphics are the best part of the game, even if your fly'n at an unimaginal speed, there is no hint of slow-down.The couses are well detailed making it hard 4 the player 2 become bored,no-matter what the track is always changing in some way making it Fun.The control is very cool, allowing u 2 powerslide on sharp turns and 2 shoot weapons at ur opponents. If there is any downside 2 the game its the sound(which is not a big issue)The sound of the characters is different from other go-karting games where in CTR the drivers talk alot during the race. But the Drivers in Speed Punks never really talk, instead they make little laughs or gestures. So Basically,SPEED PUNKS is a must-have game u should definitly buy and add 2 your game library, especially 4 racing gamers.

Fun racing, cute characters and tracks that are difficult enough to keep your interest without being so hard you want to throw your controller at the screen. You can't ask for more than that.

This game is the most fun game I have ever played on the Playstation. Even my 5 year daughter can play. We love shooting each other with the weapons. It is really fun when you play with the multitap. I really love it and would like to see more racing games like this come out in the future.

it makes mario kart puke!

You start with 6 bratty characters in souped up imaginary racers and cane them to the finish line. My first ever playstation game it was an instant hit especialy with my 6 year old brother who couldn't put it down. The racing is fun but dangerously fast and may take a few days to get used to. There is booster fuel to collect if you want to get even faster and more powerups to poke a finger at. Some powerups are TYREPOP, MISSILES, BOMBS, OIL SLICKS and TIME BOMBS. The powerslide option is really useful allowing you to lean into those tiny turns and impress your friends. Multiplayer is a must and with a maximum of four players allowed a multi-tap is reccomended. There are three bonus characters that you unlock first by winning a championship and then beating them in a race. The last bonus character, beemer is impossible to get because he is so fast. Strap yourself in, buy some supplies and be prepared. This game is very addictive.

Whatever you do do not buy this game

The reason I gave this game only 1 star is because it downright sucks. The control method is one of the worst I've ever seen, the handling is shocking, the characters are limited, the weapons hardly do anything, the tracks are bland, the cars are midgets and the gameplay is terrible.

Graphics: 2 stars About the only thing good about the game Gameplay: 1 star Terrible! It takes weeks to get used to the control method Lifespan: 1 star Doesn't even deserve 1 star! I can't believe anyone would want to play this for more than 10 minutes without breaking the disk in half Difficulty: It's bloody difficult to use the controls and if you do get the lead everyone gangs up on you! Overall: 1 star The only reason it deserves even 1 stat is because of the "fantastic" graphics

Other games in its genre Star Wars: super Bombad Racing (PS2) - 4.5 stars Crash Team Racing - 3.5 stars Muppets Racer - 2.5 stars
