Near perfect non-Square RPG

Being few lucky one to play Star Ocean for Super Famicom, I was very excited to play Star Ocean 2 for good reasons. The original was one of best game for SNES/SFC (as good as FF3/6), and this one is charming as well. The background is well drawn, and 2D based characters didn't hurt the visual either.

The battle system is revised version of the first one. For fans of Final Fantasy series may dismiss it as simple button masher, but the beauty of this system appears when you face the boss. Since there aren't any overpowering summons, tactical thinking is critical. You can take total control of one character and shift the battle in any way you like (I heavily use Rena for healing and protect Celine).

Translation is not so bad. It has some mishap which makes some section sound downright silly, but overall translation is well done if not brilliant. Voice acting is well... I wish there was option to turn it off. Luckily I got used to it by 15th hour, but Precis' voice is horrible.

The story is compelling. While this one uses similar "Advanced civilization (Human) meets undeveloped one", it is for good. Storyline is very solid, and characters are very attactive to grab your attention. This game gives very different feeling than Final Fantasy series and it certainly won't hurt to experience.

Overall, Star Ocean 2 brings best of new and old-school RPG. I just can't wait to play Star Ocean 3, and hope to see Blue Sphere in US. (I reset the machine many times just to listen the opening theme)

So many options!

Star Ocean: 2nd Story, has so many great features to it that it would take pages to talk about them all! First, you get to pick your main character. In most RPGs you only get to change their name. Of course, each character has a completely different story and the player gets to see completely different scenes through their eyes. Great fun!

Second, there are lots of skills to learn and hone. Each character has natural "talents", but can discover "hidden talents" as well as develop these talents. It's kind of fun to see what a character will do with a lump of clay or a piece of gold. Some items are very useful, while others are silly! You could spend hours just developing your skills and making items.

Third, so many endings to choose from. They claim 86, and from my play, I believe it! There are choices to me made, relationships to be formed and private actions to be seen. Each element changes the story.

I'd recommend this game to anyone who likes RPGs.

This game was truly enjoyable

I must say that this game is one of the most interesting and fun games I've ever played. I loved the Private Actions that affected the ending of the game. The PA's were little side plots that you can watch your characters do. The interactions would vary depending on which characters you had chosen (Some characters you can only get if you are a certain main character, others you can get one character, but if you select them, you can't get another. It can be pretty confusing, but it's fun.) I really loved this game, and would reccomend it to any RPG fan.

You don't play this game, you live it!

If you like immersive RPG's, then Star Ocean's the Second Story is for you. Your new home is the planet Expel and you must occasionally return to this old reality to take care of things (such as going to work) to allow you to continue chasing down the Sorcery Globe or the evil Ten Wise Men with your new friends Claude, Rena, Celine, etc.! All kidding aside, this game is quite immersive and long. The graphics are decent and the story is deep and enjoyable. The game offers a mix of familiar gameplay features as well as some revolutionary features that should set the standard for RPG's of the future. I can't wait to see how the innovations in this game are improved upon in future games (maybe such as Star Oceans 3 for the Playstation 2) to make future RPG's breathtaking eperiences!

You haven't experienced anything as much fun as this game!

The battles are inovative, the characters are fun and lovable, and the skill system revolutionizes the standard, boring, RPG menus. Not only are the skills cool, they really help. Some are just neat, but others will boost your stats! Also, learning different skills will allow you to learn Specialty skills, which in turn get you a Super Specialty. The Specialties and S. Specialties allow you to do things ranging from cooking to make health items, to weapon making, to calling various animals to help you!

Star Ocean: A ton of fun...for a while.

I really enjoyed this game when I first got it. The many people you could have in your party, the infinite items that could be made and the captivating story line. Then...it got stale. FAST. You spend more time making items then you do actually playing the RPG part of the games. You want to strangle some of the characters, but you can't (RENA! ), and the words they put in the characters mouths...Let's just say no one really talks like that. it's like watching "Plan 9 From Outer Space." What the game lacks is pace, it makes up for in the amazing battle system and the many endings, but you may find yourself screaming, "Get on with it!"

Once you get envolved, drop your plans.

This game is tremendous. It takes a while to learn the Skills/Specialties system, but once you do, these add so much to the depth of the game. Also, a hidden dungeon after you've completed most of the game adds more replay value, as it's harder than any other RPG dungeon. Gamers beware... cuz if you get hooked, your plans will go out the window.

This game is good!

I love this game! The fighting system is awesome and the graphics arent no joke either. If you like games with good story lines then this game is for you. You can decide how the game ends. There are over 70 endings to this game. The possiblities are endless. If you love RPGs like I do then this game is for you.

Fantastic gameplay; slightly lacking in plot

A great RPG for the Playstation, Star Ocean 2 features excellent gameplay and a fantastic (if practice-requiring) combat system. A deep skills/specialties system also contributes to replayability. Although it doesn't have a gripping, totally coherent plot, Star Ocean 2 is not a game to be missed. A must-own for RPG fans!

This game is fun, it's is so involved that you could literally spend month's playing it. Uncover enough of the sound bytes and you get to play on harder levels. If you are into role playing games, buy this and enjoy.
