A superb game from the creators of Star Ocean

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 20 / 20

Valkyrie Profile is the latest game from Tri-Ace, the creators of the absorbing Star Ocean series. Its two-dimensional, platform-game feel brings back memories for those of us who played games like Mega Man back in the day, while combining it with RPG battles and plotlines. The combination works much better than I had expected.

The game shines in graphics and gameplay. Beautiful hand-drawn art brings the harsh world of Valkyrie Profile to life, and the aforementioned platform feel gives gamers a jolt of nostalgia. Battle difficulty follows that gaming cliche: easy to learn, difficult to master.

The storyline is very simple on the surface: Lenneth Valkyrie must collect the souls of the dead to battle for the gods at Ragnarok. The game consists of alternating segments of gameplay (dungeons, towns, and such) and storyline (an earthly hero dies and is recruited by Lenneth). While it sounds tedious, both parts are well-integrated into the whole and enhanced by the addition of a countdown until Ragnarok. Dungeon and story segments use up this time, and when the countdown finally ends, the end of the game appears - Ragnarok. While not horribly accurate with regards to Norse mythology, it hits the mark often enough that people with in-depth knowledge of the myths will be pleasantly surprised by a reference to an esoteric character. The story is also helped by a clear and well-written English translation - and while it can be sometimes off-putting to hear the Pokemon voice actors lending their talents to the game, the voice acting is also good, if a bit uneven.

This was without a doubt one of the best games of 2000, and quite possibly one of the best games of the PlayStation's lifespan. Highly recommended.

A big thank you to Enix, I had my eyes on Valkyrie Profile ever since I read a preview on other gaming news sites, I'm not proficient in Japanese, so I didn't want to import this game. When I found out that Enix was going to bring this game to the States, I was estatic, and I have to say that Enix of America did a great job with this game, same goes with Tri-Ace, this is definitely one of the more original RPG out there, and a welcoming change after playing the Final Fantasy series to death.

So you're wondering why you should get the game, well let me point out a few features. First and foremost is the story, based off of Norse Mythology, because of a war between the Norse gods, Valkyrie was summoned to collect and train souls that can fight for them in the war. There is a lot of character development in this game, each person have its own story, and sometimes they are connected with another. There are 3 settings for this game, 3 endings, and if you play in Hard mode, you can get characters not found in the other setting, and also dungeons not seen before. Beautiful graphics, good voice acting, a very different battle and inventory system, this game is definitely a must buy for RPG fans, it has a fairly steep learning curve, so for people new to the genre, don't give up, because you'll definitely be rewards later on! Now I'm hoping Enix can bring over Dragon Quest 7 :P

Beautiful

This is hands down the most attractive RPG I have ever played. THANK YOU, good developers, for daring to break the polygon-based mold that's been built by Square and others. Don't get me wrong--I love Square to death, but this game is above and beyond anything else I've seen on the PSX. Yes, I've played FF9. No, I don't like it as much as this. You owe it to yourself to buy Valkyrie Profile. Your eyes will thank you. Your ears will thank you. Beautiful graphics, beautiful music, actual effective use of Norse mythology...I love it!

This is probably the most tragically neglected RPG of the year, and quite possibly the best. If you know what I mean when I say that Square lost something after FF6, then look no further--buy this game. You won't be disappointed.

A under appreeciated classic

This is easily the most underrated game of all time as far as iam concerned. Its a crime how the gaming media practically ignored this game is the wake of FF9 and Crono Cross, but sh!t happens right? Anyway...

The 2d graphics are beautiful if you can appreciate it. And the battle system is so unique you'll be learning different combo's everytime you play it. Plus the text is so mature and well done I didnt want to just push the button * ahem... FF8 anyone?* but actually pay attention. Plus there is so much depth and side quest in this game the replay value goes through the roof.

But I think the most overlooked featrue of Valyrie profile is the sensational music. Listening to the music while hearing someone's regret's after death with send chill's down your spine. It really has to be experienced to be apreciated.

So if your sick of the standard fair of RPG's, or just looking for a unique cult classic. Pick up Valkyrie Profile, you wont be dissapointed. I hav'nt had this much fun with an rpg siince FF6 and SoM.

Where's everyone?!

Hmmm...is it just me or am I feeling that this game is being neglected?! I know u guys are probably too busy with chrono cross (don't get me wrong...chrono cross is VERY VERY GOOD) but for a totally different experience u must give valkyrie profile a shot. Unique story, interesting battle system, good 2D graphics (who ever thought 2D graphics could look this good?!!) and a whole list of playable characters make this game a must play.....please for the sake of future innovative games (and 2D graphics....hehe) buy this game!!!!!

The most depressing videogame EVER.

Our main character is an abused child who is about to be sold into slavrey by her mother. So she and her boyfriend run away, and they freeze to death in a poppy field.

That's before the opening credits, folks.

Valkyrie Profile has the most unique plot you will ever see in a video game. Characters must die (sadly and tragically) before they can be selected by the Valkyrie for battle in Valhalla.

These are deaths so sad you'll want to lie on the floor. Melancholy, lachrmose, morose, just plain ose.

But it's an unmissable opportunity.

Much like Final Fantasy Tactics, this had a small print run, and demand has long since outstripped supply. I bought if for 40 when it came out, sold it for $150 and it'll cost me $300 to play it again, as I bought a PSP for the exress purpose of playing this game again. It is that much worth it.

A Great RPG!

I've been playing RPGs for years and I have to say this is one of the most original games I've played in a long time. The story line is truly compelling. The battle system is very innovative, and you could write a book on the character development system. This game has some of the most beautiful 2D graphics I've seen in a game, and the music is amazing. I can not say enough good things about this game. If you are looking for a fun, original RPG, with a deep story, and multiple endings, then this is the game for you.

Valkyrie Profile is a positive addition to any RPG library

I recently bought this game, and haven't been able to put the controller down in days. Valkyrie Profile is an innovative game that takes elements from multiple gaming genres such as adventure and strategy and ties them into a terrific gaming experience. 2D backgrounds are beautifully done and the battle system used is among the best I've dealt with. Add a topnotch storyline revolving around Norse mythology, and you've got a great Playstation RPG that should be good for hours. Enix's VP is a definitly welcome change to Squaresoft's overused and trite storylines and I would recommend Valkyrie Profile to anyone.

Who needs Final Fantasy when you can have the real deal?

Much like one of the lost souls in this game that are recruited and trained, Valkyrie Profile has been given a chance for life again in the secondary market. Although it was hugely successful in Japan, this American version bombed stateside. It is only now that the game has faded into oblivion that gamers have caught on to the charm and appeal that it offers. Valkyrie Profile will surely go down in the annals of video-gaming history as one of the best (and best-loved) RPG's ever to hit the market.

I can't remember much hype surrounding the release of this title, as it came out in the wake of the genre-redefining Final Fantasy VII and its sequels. And that is such a shame, because there are so many positive things to say about this game. Although it is billed as an RPG (role-playing game), Valkyrie Profile effortlessly combines elements of the best side-scroller, action, and adventure games that even the most casual of gamers will recognize.

In the tradition of the Final Fantasy series, Valkyrie Profile creates a cohesive and compelling storyline that pulls you in and keeps you there until the final credit has faded. It has characters that you literally grow to love as you, as the eponymous Lenneth Valkyrie, gather and train lost human souls to fight as Odin's einherjar at Ragnarok, the cataclysmic battle at the end of time.

The segments of the game where you control your character and roam around complex, confusing dungeons are reminiscent of the ever-popular Super Mario games. These side-scrolling adventures are the meat of the game; in them you encounter not only monsters to engage in battle but also characters that become your party, and ultimately, the einherjar. When you initially encounter each character, a flashback sequence kicks in and tells you how and why that character died. Then your job as Odin's army recruiter begins and you convince them to join your party. From then on it's off to run into monsters and level up!

Like Diablo and its sequel Diablo II, how you equip the members in your party determines how powerful they are and how quickly they level up. As Valkyrie, it is also your job to make sure each member is adequately equipped with armor, weapons, and accessories. You choose three einherjar to fight by your side at any given time. If you have more than three einherjar, you are given the choice of whom to put in your party. And this is where Valkyrie Profile sets itself apart from other RPG's: not only is it important about whom you put into your party, but it is also important where you place them in your attack formation and when you have each character attack the enemy! Given all these options in battle, it is no wonder playing this game is so much fun!

The game's visuals are just stunning and the sounds are music to your ears. You have about 15 minutes to look and listen to the first cinematic sequence that opens the game. In this time you can soak in the majesty of the images that were used to illustrate the story and its characters, and you can lie back and hear the carefully composed instrumentals that emphasize the mood of each scene. (Incidentally, you can even buy the soundtrack to this beautiful game!)

Obviously, a lot of time and thought went into the making of this game; do yourself a favor and experience it. The secondary-market prices may be a bit steep, but they're a testament to the complexity and replayability this game offers. So, pick up this title that fell by the wayside, give it a good working-over, and make it a prized part of your video game collection--before Ragnarok comes!

Enix returns to the US in a blaze of glory!

This is a beautiful game. No question. As a fan of the Dragon Warrior series, I am thrilled to see Enix back in the US, and their first published RPG stateside in 5 years is Valkyrie Profile. The game is gorgeous; the voice-acting is top-notch. I will not rant on about the physical characteristics of the game, though. It is addictive, moving, and epic, and THAT is what RPG fans crave. This game is heartfelt, sweeping, and very entertaining. I can't recommend it enough. Enix returns with a bang, and this game is the start of good things to come! Support Enix and buy their new masterpiece, a sure-fire sleeper hit! You won't regret it! On a side note -- you may want to pick up the strategy guide with the game; while the game is certainly playable without it, there is a steep learning curve, which the guide helps overcome. Order them both on Amazon today!
