The Nickelodeon classic becomes a video game

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 2 / 2

Over the years, the Nickelodeon children's programming network has had a ton of game shows, nearly every one of which being excellent. By far, their most popular game show was the Double Dare series. Sure, their other game shows were good, but this one just had something that most of the others lacked. Back in the glory days of the NES, Rare and Gametek made the TV show into a video game! How does the Double Dare video game measure up? Read on and find out.

PROS:
-ALTHOUGH AN OLD NES GAME, IT CAPTURES THE ATMOSPHERE OF THE SHOW PERFECTLY. You've got face-offs at the beginning of each round, Physical Challenges, questions and answers, and, of course, the Double Dare obstacle course.
-THE QUESTION AND ANSWER PORTION OF THE SHOW IS DEAD-ON ACCURATE TO ITS TV SHOW COUNTERPART. Every question is multiple choice, and if you don't know the answer, just like on the show, you can Dare the other team to answer it - But, also like on the show, they can always Double Dare you back, at which point you must either answer it or take the Physical Challenge. I'm surprised how well the question and answer portion of the show was done in the game.

CONS:
-THE CONTROLS IN THE PHYSICAL EVENTS ARE HORRIBLE! If you're playing against the computer or you're doing the obstacle course, you probably aren't going to win. These controls seem like they were programmed by Satan himself.
-MANY QUESTIONS ARE TOO EASY. Sure, there are a few brain-busters, but most of these questions are very easy, and chances are you learned the answers in pre-school.
-YOU DON'T WIN REAL MONEY OR PRIZES. Okay, this one's pretty obvious. But I guess this is the ultimate flaw of any game show-based video game.

OVERALL:
Overall this is a pretty good video game version of a classic game show. Unfortunately, what the game succeeds in is ultimately derailed by what it fails in. If you've got an NES emulator, I recommend downloading this game, but I don't really recommend laying down the cash and buying it - the poor controls in the events are going to ruin your gaming experience almost for sure. Still, the game is decent, and is at least worth trying out.
