Late, but Great.

If you are a big-time college basketball fan like myself, getting this game is a no-brainer. Sure, 2K Sports pushed the release date back almost two months from it's original release date. And sure, the game came out about a week before Selection Sunday and the NCAA Tournament festivities. But despite those facts, this game delivers in more ways than one. The graphics look great, and no, the players don't look exactly as they do in real life. But, this is a college game, not an NBA game, and it would take loads of time to perfect that.

The game contains all the normal modes that 2K Sports has had in the last several years. You can simply go right into a game from the main menu and choose your favorite team to play with. All Division I teams are included in the game which gives a wide variety of teams to choose from. It also contains classic teams from the past which are always fun if you want to change things up a little bit. The Pontiac Tournament Mode is also included where you can play through a tournament without first playing the regular season. The brackets are also customizable which gives you the power to set-up the matchups of your choice.

In my opinion, the greatest mode on the game is of course the Legacy Mode. 2K has made some great improvements to this mode involving recruiting. You can begin recruiting players as early as their freshman year in high school which makes for an absolutely great experience while recruiting. In the Legacy Mode, you can simply participate in an Open Legacy where you can choose any team of your choice, or you can participate in a Career Legacy. In the Career Legacy, you begin at the bottom of the coaching ladder and choose a team from the lower level of Division I Basketball. There are many teams to choose from which is also a plus. Playing through a season can be filled with ups and downs, just like a regular season in college basketball. This is very realistic, even more so than it has been in the past.

Perhaps a noticable change in this year's version is offensively. Unlike past versions, you now can have the option of using 8 plays while playing the game. In the past, you could only call four during the game. Also it seems 2K has emphasized the true college game which makes offense much more difficult. You must pass the ball and look for open shots in order to succeed in each game. While some people who love to play an up-tempo style make look at this as a negative, you can still run up and down the floor but it isn't a dunkfest all the time.

While many people compare this game to NBA 2K6, college fans will enjoy this more than it's NBA counterpart. If you love college basketball, don't let the late release date prevent you from buying this game. It is worth the $59.99 even if it is towards the end of the season.

Overall I say this game is a step ahead of NBA 2K6. The reason I made this statement is because it's a little harder to get those freestyle dunks and hit those well defended shots. The controls are the same as on NBA 2K6 which is a good thing. PEACE

Better than you have previously thought

First off, I am telling you the graphics in this game are GOOD. Ive heard numerous reviews on how these graphics are not up to par for a 360 game. No. The courts, baskets, stadiums, and fans are extremly well designed. Its like watching a game on tv, even every fan has something different on.

The controls are simple to get used to, its not a game that you will get frustated with control-wise. The gameplay itself is very crisp, never a lagging moment or disconfigured audio bit.
x to shoot
y to jump and block
right stick to juke and steal
left stick for movement
those are your basics.

The feature that you will love if you mainly watch college basketball during the tournament (like myself) you can create your own brackets each with your customized matchups and regiouns. There is a legacy mode where you can build up your coach and gameplay skills as you try to enter a dominant school franchise, or turn a unpopular school into a dominant scoring machine.
The only reason I gave this a four is becuase usually teams like duke and uconn can rack up points from odd angles and beyond the arch while a bad team cant shoot worth a crap unless your wide open or doing a layup. There are many other exicting features you can discover with this game that creates even better gamplay than I have explained. This is a must rent if not buy.

Like a 15-14 season, College Hoops is a disappointment

When 2K Sports launched NBA 2K6 with the Xbox 360, they managed to cram every bit of the current-gen version into the game while redefining the graphics and tightening some of the gameplay elements. With their college franchise, they hoped to find similar success just in time for March Madness and the NCAA Tournament. College Hoops 2K6 for the Xbox 360 is an airball that is ultimately a disappointing basketball game that should have been sidelined until next season.

Hoops 2K6 isn't a terrible game, but it's like that college player who is recovering from an injury, it's not at 100%, but it's definitely playable with a little risk. Featuring all of the gameplay modes from the current-gen version, Hoops 2K6 on the Xbox 360 is loaded with different things to do. Most importantly, the Legacy mode is an interesting approach to the normal Dynasty mode of other basketball games. It lets you take control of a college basketball staff and work your way up from coaching an almost-unknown team to a nationally-recognized powerhouse. If coaching a scrappy team isn't your thing, you can always do the "Open Legacy", which is like the "normal" Dynasty mode, complete with team and roster management.

Hoops 2K6's biggest let-down isn't off the court, it's on the court. In order to make the game feel more "realistic" to college play, 2K Sports slowed the game down and decreased the accuracy of normal shooters. It seems that the timing of the shooting is also harder and blocking is more common. The "Strip & Rip" system allows too many steals, making the tempo of the game very uneven. In fact, in comparison to NBA 2K6, the only thing in Hoops 2K6 that seems to be better or even fair to compare is the rebounding. Fighting for rebounds is definitely more entertaining here than in the NBA game. But in the end, for the sake of realism, it seems that 2K Sports took out all of the things that made NBA 2K6 fun and that's a disappointment.

The visuals received the same treatment here as NBA 2K6, with realistic character models, cloth physics, and beads of sweat that form on the bodies of your players. The stadiums look pretty good, and the new band and cheerleader animations add a little bit to the college atmosphere. You'll see coaches prowl the sidelines, yelling out onto the court and squatting down to observe the action. Unfortunately, the players' faces look absolutely nothing like real-life players. I understand that NCAA regulations prohibit the use of its players' likenesses, but some of the players look ridiculous. Even worse are the coaches, whom I'd previously believed would look almost exactly like their real-life counterparts. It's almost laughable to see how silly some of the coaches look.

If you're desperate for a college basketball game, I'd recommend picking up EA's March Madness 2006 on current-gen consoles. There just isn't anything here that warrants a $60 purchase; the "realistic" gameplay isn't fun, the visuals are disappointing, and all of the same gameplay modes can be played on the current-gen version for $20 or so. As I said before, this game should have sat on the bench for an extra year.

Let me tell you I love this game...I bought an XBOX 360 for NCAA College Football 2007..after playing that for a few days I realized it was horrible, I brought it back to the store and exchanged it for this game....I have not been dissappointed...There are a variety of game modes...Ive been playing in the Open Legacy mode quite a bit.....The game play is awesome! The fact that you can start recruiting kids from Freshmen in high school is AMAZING! and the NCAA Tourny Preview show is pretty cool as well...All in all, for the price, I highly suggest this game!

2K6 is a beating, especially when playing in Legacy mode; have fun missing layups and easy shots! Graphics are decent, but nothing to rave about - the 360 deserves better.
