Prey for more PREY

A really fun 3DO shooter, with lots to keep you busy, including anti gravity wall walking and flying around in a shuttle. Lots of weapons and enemies. Having said that, it is not as wild as Q4, but still a very good game.

Good start

Caveat: This is a single-player only review.

So I picked up this game on the cheap (its been out for over a year) to tide me over until I got Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4. I enjoyed the experience overall, but compared to the cream of the crop FPS out there, it just isn't as good.

The Good:
-Graphics are pretty good. This is id's Doom 3 engine at work. Good lighting, nice textures, and a good particle system. Impressive for a 1st generation 360 game.
-Interesting weapons. Breaks the convention of the typical FPS, including no reloading!
-Pretty length game.
-Plot. The use of Native American characters and mythology is a welcome change from the usual military based shooter.
-Physics puzzles. The gravity defying gameplay, and the portals are definitely innovative.

The Bad:
-Plot. Seriously... a giant sphere on which aliens hunt and devour organic material? Call the sphere a "Halo" and there you go. Or maybe its the Borg.
-The humans characters looks pretty bad... just blobs of polygons skinned with pretty low-res textures. The enemies look better.
-Weapons. Balance is an issue... you're never sure when to use what and on what enemies.
-For some reason, the combat isn't visceral. I don't know if its because they didn't use the controller feedback, or because the enemies aren't that interesting (is that a floating Buddha statue?) but its just not as much of a kick as other games.
-Physics puzzles. While they are innovative, they aren't very well integrated into the story. OK, I have to walk along the ceiling now. I wonder why. I have to flip the room around. Super... any particular reason? They are all interesting, but they don't really come together to form a cohesive game.
-Boss battles. Not a big fan, sorry.

It was a pretty fun experience, but I don't think I'll try it again. I'd rather go replay any of the Halo series, or Half-Life 2. Speaking of HL2, if you are planning on doing a game where physics are going to play a role, you've got serious competition. The physics puzzle in Prey were pretty much exclusively environmental, whereas the gravity gun in HL2 was both environmental AND combative. Prey was also the first to introduce Portals, but "Portal" did it better because it stepped back and allowed the player to get used to the concept without getting constantly shot at by weird aliens with big feet.

Still, if you can get it cheap, pick it up and give it a whirl. It doesn't suck.

It's good. Upside down walkways, aliens, guns, puzzles, and it's simple. The game, as mentioned before, is repetitive although the scenery keeps changing, so I didn't lose interest. when I start playing I can't stop! The game is long too, it just keeps going and going and going.....

Great game...could have been better

This is a great game, but could have been so much more. The story is epic, the characters are pretty good, the enemies are fantastic, but its missing something. It could have used some human guns, other than the wrench. But overall, I would reccomend it!

Underestimated; really fun.

I was skeptical about this game when I first started playing it because I didn't know what to expect but as the game went along I really started enjoying myself and noticing what a sharp shooter I was!! I think that the futuristic part of the game puts a lot of people off and all the topsy curvies confuse people but after a while you'll get used to it and start looking forward to it.
