Love to Hate

PC Version

As of this writing I am still trying to love this game. When first installed the mission loads your left in wonder. The graphics and detail are something to see. I'm a fan of most things Star Trek so I'm usually bias in any ST game. This game was not...and still is not ready for shipment. The controls are a complete mess and the multiplayer is a disaster. There are a group of us 20+ who all have legacy and play together. Out of 10 games in a session I'd say 2 go smoothly.

If you'd ask if I'd buy it again knowing what I know now...yeah I'd buy it again. The game truly has alot of potential....they just really screwed it up.

If your not a fan of star trek don't buy this game. If you are a fan I'd say buy it...after the kick in the nuts wears off you'll still have fun. And once you finally get a multiplayer game to run you'll love it.

Not "Star Trek" Worthy

The graphics are really nice, but the game storyline is simplistic and does not require any thought on the part of the player. I would suggest renting it or waiting to buy it used from people like me who will toss it out soon.

A root canal is more fun than this game

This game is a travesty. Poor controls and poor mission design will have you bashing your head against your console until you lose enough blood to pass out. Going to the dentist for a root canal is a more enjoyable Star Trek experience than this awful attempt at a Starship Combat game. It is as though Mad Doc software took all of the good ideas that could have been put into a Star Trek starship combat game, jumped up and down on them, shredded them, flushed them down the toilet, retrieved them from the sewer, burnt them and then buried them in concrete to make sure that none of them were implemented. Don't buy this game for anyone else unless you really hate them, even then you would have to really dislike them to purchase them something so wretched.

Very Addictive, fun, but not perfect

I was waiting for this game for a long time, as have many other Trek gamers. I loved Bridge Commander, Armada and Armada II, Elite Forces, and DS9 the Fallen.

This game becomes addictive quickly. I admit, it was a little strange at first, and now I can't stop playing it!

The good:

- Awesome graphics, ships look, move, fire, and explode the way they should (with a few destruction exceptions).

- Good controls. Yes, I said it - good controls! these are battleships, big friggin machines, not little fighters. The sluggish, sometimes slow movements of the ships to align weapons gives them a sense of mass.

- Replayability. If you love Trek (and let's face it, you do if you want this game), you will have endless possibilities with fleet configs, online teams, etc.

What could have been better?

- the single player compaign is not tight, especially considering the time they took (delays?) and the trouble of contracting all 5 actors from the series. The voices are great, but they aren't even used in the skirmishes all that much. They should have Archer, Kirk, Picard, etc. shouting orders all over the place.

- Fleet customization and skirmishes - You can't pick your enemies' fleet composition. You can't pick the name of the ship you want. I tried forever to get the "dream fleet" of TOS Enterprise, TNG Enterprise, Defiant, and Voyger. Guess what? could not do it.

- Music. While the music is not bad, why can't a Star Trek game have actual music from Star Trek??? I mean, Paramount owns all the themes so why not? There is a huge discography of music from all 5 shows and 10 movies! All the Star Wars games have actual Star Wars themes throughout.

Anyways, despite these things, I am still having a blast. Very fun game, and especially for a big Trek geek like me!

Where have all the good Star Trek games gone???

Oh yeah, there hasn't been one in forever. I'm a HUGE Star Trek fan and I have to say that this game SUCKS. Save your money for something else. The interface is clumsy and not well thought out. I hope that when Star Trek Online come out that it's light years better than this.

worth playing

I see some people have unreal expectations for the game . It is star trek . Its not meant to be like the tv shows because its basically a space ship battle simulator. You do need to spend time learning the controls. Some people complain about lack of ai. Well if you learn the controls you can get your fleet to go where you want them to go without trouble. As far as the ai in the battles they will fight to the death unless you call them out of battle. You must pay attention to your fleet.Theres a wealth of ships and the voice talent is top notch. The graffics are very nice and its a good 3d eviorment. As far as price what do you expect all games are 50-60 from release.
I will say that the game is too short they needed to extend the missions. I dont do online gaming so now that im done with it . I am truely done with it theres no replayability to it at all.

don't buy star trek legacy

The controls in this game take forever to learn and the control book still leaves you pressing the wrong buttons. This game should also include all the races of star trek not just the main ones. They should not have scraped the upgrading part of this game. They need to improve if they're going to make Star Trek legacy 2.

The "Legacy" of Bad Star Trek Games

I was excited about this game and I figured since Bethesda was behind it, the makers of the "Elder Scolls" series, I figured they could finally make a good Star Trek game that would not only appease fans but have crossover appeal. What we have is Star Trek Legacy, a game that seems more last gen then next gen on the 360. This game is at times fun to play, but you get frustrated with the controls for one thing and the missions are sometimes ridiculously hard or ridiculously easy. For me the biggest sore note was the controls. The larger ships like the Galaxy Class and the other battleships are a pain to manuever. You end up getting killed without just trying to go after an enemy ship. The smaller ships basically lay waste to a battleship. The Klingon ships are very weak which I found surprising. The Romulan ships are stronger than the Klingon ships which was also kind of odd. The power balance is obviously skewed. The story, a rogue Vulcan scientist c'mon, has that not been done numerous times before in various episodes and movies. It would've nice to play the game from the prospective of the other races and to simply have more races to choose from like the Dominion, Cardassians, The Orion Syndicate, The Breen, The Bajorans etc. This game seems incomplete and unfortunately joins the long list of awful Star Trek games. Shame on you Bethesda! THIS GAME IS BOLDLY GOING TO THE DISCOUNT BIN!

Finally!

Many of the other views offer valid criticism of this game; however, for those of us who have loved Star Trek for years nothing can top flying around in the original NCC-1701 and blowing Klingons and Romulans up! That alone was worth the $60. The only complaint I think is slightly unfair is the claim that the control are difficult and all I can say is that driving a battleship is going to be harder than flying a fighter plane. The controls are slow because big hunks of metal move slow and from an "in game" point of view that is about the only way the designers could convey the sense of size and power of these ships. In any event, it is Star Trek and it is a great game. Personally, I would have paid $60 just for the ship to ship combat simulator so the entire story is just an added bonus.

o.k. game, nothing great

Very nice graphics. I Enjoyed having the real Captains do the voices. But those are the only positives of the game. The controls were hard to get used to. I felt like every time I ordered my ships to go to warp, only half would respond. There are no checkpoints!! If you fail a mission, you have to start over again. I guess the designers of the game forgot the xbox 360 has a hard drive. After beating a few levels I got bored with it. If your a huge star trek fan you will probably want to finish the game.
