It greatly pains me to write this review, this is one of those games I wanted to love but could not due to poorly implemented gameplay and horrific design. This game is a space shooter in vain of Starfox, but unfortunately falters due to bad gameplay. What makes matters worse about this game is the fact that not only does it use the FX Chip that Starfox used for its 3D graphics, it was also made by the same people who helped make the original Starfox. What a shame. I have so many memories of good space shooters (Starfox, Panzer Dragoon, Gradius, Novastorm, Hyperzone) and they have basically become one of my main staples of my gaming preferences which is why this game's failure is very painful to me.
WHAT THE GAME IS: It's basically a very poor man's Starfox, with poor gameplay and an even poorer storyline and poor level design. You basically have to save the galaxy and a base... yawn, boring Starfox had a more compelling story than this.
GRAPHICS: What the hell is this? The level designs are awful! There is no reason for the environments to look this bad! Starfox had way better level designs than this, come on now!
MUSIC: One of the main highlights of the game, it comes with the music a space shooter should come with, but unfortunately it doesn't bring the good gameplay with it.
SOUND: The usual shooting and exploding sounds.
GAMEPLAY: This game falters in this area. It brings so many good ideas to the table, but implements them very poorly. Your ship can transform from a mech, to a regular ship, and then to a tank. Unfortunately, these ships handle badly, shooting doesn't work properly over the fact the reticle on-screen barely works. Also note the fact the bosses are almost impossible to kill, which is a damn shame because the score for this game would have been higher had the bosses been beatable.
OVERALL: To put it simply, this game sucks, which is a damn big shame because it feels like it wants to be Starfox, but cannot do so because the developer did not properly implement its ideas. Shame, shame Argonaut Software. This game has good music and some exciting moments, but these alone can't save it from the fact that the shooting barely works most of the time, the level design is awful, and the bosses are almost impossible to kill.
THE GOOD: Good music, some exciting moments of gameplay.
THE BAD: Awful level design, shooting barely works which in turn ruins the game itself.
