Wing Commander - SNES

Wing Commander is a space flight simulator. The premise of the game is basically that the human race is waging war against an alien cat like race called the Kilrathi. You play a rookie pilot who by the end of the game (hopefully) has made a name for himself. While much of the game is spent completing missions, inbetween those missions you can spend time talking to your fellow teammates in the lounge area, checking out the kill board or getting a mission debriefing. The missions themselves vary from destroying all targets while traveling from one nav point to another to escorting friendlies. The mission view is that from the cockpit. Depending on what ship you are flying the view is different as are the weapons and shields available. You can also talk to your wingmen or taunt the enemy with certain commands. The controls take a bit of getting used to but after an hour or two you should feel right at home. The graphics and music are not that great unfortunately. The graphics are dark and not very detailed and the music is not that memorable. What will keep you playing though is the storyline and the challange. How you perform determines how the war goes. Fail too many objectives and your carrier, the Tiger Claw will be attacked. Complete the objectives and you'll take the war to the Kilrathi! Overall, the game is a lot of fun and is an excellent start to a great series.

A pathetic game

Wing Commander (Released circa 1993.) One of two Wing Commander games for the Super Nintendo.

Over the years, many games in the Wing Commander series had been released for play on personal computers. What's not that well known is that one of the earliest installments in the legendary PC game series was originally released on a video game console. It happened in the early nineties. Wing Commander was released on the Super Nintendo circa 1993. Read on for my review.

PROS:
-IT'S A FIRST-PERSON PERSPECTIVE SPACE SHOOTER ON THE SUPER NINTENDO. There weren't a whole lot of these games on the system. And as you'll soon read, uniqueness is just about this game's only strength.

CONS:
-HORRIBLY PIXELATED COMBAT GRAPHICS WITH CHOPPY ANIMATION. The Super Nintendo was NOT as good as the PCs of its era when it came to frame rate issues - play this game and you'll discover that firsthand.
-EXTREMELY SLUGGISH CONTROLS. Often, it takes over a second for any control movement to occur on screen, or for any guns to fire after you've pressed the buttons. Why?
-BECAUSE OF THE ISSUES EXPRESSED ABOVE, COMBAT IS UNBEARABLY TEDIOUS AND FRUSTRATING. And since combat, the MAIN FEATURE of the game, is like that, why would you even want to bother playing it?
-THERE WERE BETTER GAMES OF SIMILAR TYPES ON THE SUPER NINTENDO. Hell, many of the games on the Super Nintendo that I deemed "bad games" for the system are better than this one!
-THE SEQUEL, SECRET MISSIONS, IS PRETTY MUCH THE EXACT SAME GAME! So essentially, we have two pieces of crap for the Super Nintendo that are basically the same thing! The obvious answer to this issue? Buy neither.

OVERALL:
Steer clear of this garbage. If you MUST play this game (and you really don't have any reason to), get a Super Nintendo emulator and download the rom. There was no excuse for this blunder to see the light of day on the Super Nintendo. This game is just disgraceful. Don't play it. There are a TON of other games in the Wing Commander series for other consoles that are WAY better.
