Beautiful Update

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 0 / 4

Okay before we get started, if you are looking for something new..look somewhere else. All window dressing aside this game is pretty much the same as Dune 2000. There are some new units, which are given to you at random points in the game. And the more advanced units like the Ornithopters are given to you early on. The game looks beautiful, the 3d effects are marvelous. On slower processors though, the game tends to start "chugging" when you begin to put alot of troops into play. Something I never noticed on the prequel. On the plus side this game starts as a sequel to Dune 2000, giving a reason for the update. If you enjoyed 2000 and are looking for more play in the same vein. Dont hesitate to pick it up. If you are looking for something new...pass this one by.

A Wonderful game except.....

Emperor Battle for Dune is a wonderful game except the steep system requirements and the extremely laggy online play. If you are famaliar with the Dune Universe than this is a must have, if you are a fan of 3d rts games, then this is a must have. If you have a 56k or less modem try to avoid online play. The campaigns are very in depth, and you can always rely on the wonderful cut scenes by westwood actors and actresses. This game is worth its cost and is a must have for most gamers.

a good game

THis game is very good. it may be impossibble to beat though. You have to capture all the territories of a mjority of the planet and capture the planet. It is like commmand and conquer but you must make you own alliances,(and lose them)defend territories, make sure you don't retreat or forfeit to much or you will be executed. It is slightly corny that some of the charecters from the movie/book are in this with different names. overall this is a very good 3-d strategy game

Be carefull of what you ask for.

Bummer. Couldn't even install this game on our computer. At first, we thought we'd received a bad version and reordered a replacement. Then, after hours on-line with tech support, Westwood decided our Celeron processor doesn't meet the requirements. Boo hoo.

is this game fun

Emperor: Battle for Dune is a good game that could have been much better.

Before I even start with the gameplay, let me say that I am a sucker for great stories and settings in games. Much of my enjoyment of this game stems from the fact that it takes place in Frank Herbert's Dune universe, which, other than Tolkien's Middle Earth is probably the most well-loved scifi/fantasy storyline ever created. If you did not enjoy, or have not read the Dune books by Frank Herbert, you may not enjoy this game the same way I did.

The gameplay however, is exactly what you would expect from a Westwood real-time-strategy Game: fun, addictive and predictable. If you were hoping for the same kind of innovation that was present in the RTS pioneer Dune 2, you'll be disappointed here. Not only do the basic elements borrow heavily from Westwood's Command and Conquer games, they also owe a great deal to Blizzard's Starcraft. That you can choose between three distinct factions alone is usually indication of a similarity to Starcraft for some reason, and the rule holds true here. Every vehicle and unit in the Atreides faction in Emperor seems to have a direct parallel in the Terran race in Starcraft.

Despite those similarites, games of Emperor play out much differently than in most real time strategy games, though this is not always a good thing. While on the whole, gameplay is fun and addictive, multiplayer battles often degenerate into stalemates, primarily because of lack of a formation feature. Without the ability the organize troops into formations, its nearly impossible to mount an organized offensive. As your units hit bottlenecks in the terrain, they tend to narrow their ranks, until eventually they begin marching in a line, which, as any military general can tell you, is terrible for a head on assault. More often than not, your units will walk one by one into a well fortified enemy position and get slaughtered, one by one. Oftentimes, multiplayer matches will last for hours, with each player simply growing more and more entrenched in their position.

When even combat can take place however, it is usually exciting and challenging. Vehicle to Vehicle combat is often intense, though unfortunately works on the paper-rock-scissors model prevalent in most real time strategy games. The end result of that is that you'll usually need two seperate groups of vehicles and infantry: one which is good at destroying ground troops, and the other specializing in smashing vehicles. Air units add an exciting third dimension to combat, and must be considered as a whole new theater of tactics, not just as scissors to paper that must avoid the rock.

The biggest disappointment in Emperor though, is the single player campaign. While the cutscenes are pretty good for a computer game (which isn't saying much), the scenarios are often poorly designed, and enemy AI is lackluster. The only way that the campaign can challenge you with this poor AI is by stacking the odds in the opponents favor. For a challenge, you will probably be forced to resort to multiplayer, which is stable and has a small but dedicated player base, which you may friendlier than the large, sprawling community in a game like Starcraft.

If you're a fan of the Dune books, or of Real Time Strategy games, this is a must own.

this is the best game ever because of the graphics and the role you play. Your trying to get control of the spice only one house will prevale. If you played the sega genesis game Dune : The Battle For Arrakis... I really suggest this game to you because of the game its self. It beats all the war games on the pc. From WAR GAMES the game to Dune 2000 , You've tryed the rest now try the BEST.

Dune 3D.

Emperor picks up where Dune 2000 left off, and the planet Arrakis is without rule. The three houses are fighting for control of the spice under the Guild's watchful eye, but are the Guild really what they seem?

After you have chosen a house you will be greeted by your leader. The leader of House Atreides is the Duke Achilles, played by Michael Dorn (Worf), and you may recognize the leader of House Harkonnen as Seinfeld's FDR. Near the beginning and end of the game there will be lots of cutscenes between missions filling you in on what's happening, but for the bulk of the game you're pretty much on your own, battle after battle. You will also have the option of forming alliances with subhouses, and this will help greatly in the long run.

The game itself is well designed, it is the first 3D game of its kind, before Warcraft III. The closer you get to an enemy homebase the more their portion of Arrakis resembles their homeworld. The game itself is huge, and takes a relatively fast system to run smoothly on. My system is a 2.0 gHz and it runs fine until the really big missions at the end, when the processor seems to be overloaded keeping track of so many bad guys.

All in all, a great addition to Westwood's Dune series. And, if you're computer isn't fast enough, try the game's predecessor, Dune 2000.

I've been playing the Dune series games by Westwood since the early 90's from Dune, Dune 2, etc. If your a fan of these series you will love this game. The graphics are stunning, the AI is exceptional. The story lines and RTS all follow the same quality you would expect from Westwood. There is a little learning curve because of the 3D transition, but once you get used to it, it's hard going back to the 2D games such as Red Alert.
