Excellent multiplayer game, but kind of weak otherwise.

If you're looking for a multiplayer game, this might be a good choice, but if you're into single-player action/adventure games, you might want to consider something else.

In Red Dog you take control of a tank-like vehicle to do battle with the Haak forces. Each mission in the single player mode has you doing something a bit different; from escorting a tanker or a jeep full of scientists, to destroying a submarine. In many respects Red Dog really delivers. The premise is good, the controls and physics are excellent, and the gameplay can be a lot of fun. Where Red Dog falls short though is in its difficultly. A lack of intermediate save points and limited continues combine to make this a very tough game. You'll find yourself re-doing a level numerous times when you have trouble defeating a level boss. This can make finishing Red Dog a very tedious and time consuming task.

Where Red Dog really shines though is in its multiplayer mode. With a variety of game types (like deathmatch and king of the hill) and a number of different maps to choose from, you'll have a blast playing against your friends.

With the recent decline in Dreamcast prices, I decided to explore many of their gaming options. Much to my happiness, I found that while some titles did disappoint, many of them were simply overlooked by the videogaming community and were actually a lot of fun. Amongst the titles I chose, I picked up Red Dog, wondering exactly how good it could be for such a discounted cost. What I found was something quite enjoyable, once I mastered the controls.
Red Dog is a nice little mini tank that can get into just about anywhere (which is where the game tries to take you). Along the way, you can improve its abilities by doing challenge boards (some of which are a bit annoying), giving you better weapons, more speed, and so on. There are a variety of different enemies to test you skills against, a scope of stylized missions (some of which are overbearing, while others a way too much fun), and a montage of boards to run through. The control of the Red Dog tank is a bit difficult to master, however, and was a bit frustrating in the "learning phase." Still, it has some advantages over your basic "vehicular carnage" shooter. Once you master the aiming with one joystick/moving with another, you can actually take time to position your shots for maximum damage while in motion. This feature comes in handy, removing the limitedness of many games somewhat like this one.
All in all, it is a worthwhile addition to anyone's collection of Dreamcast titles. You simply have to give it a little time and not expect miracles from it.

A must have Dreamcast game!

Red Dog is one of the best Dreamcast games made for the system. The graphics are great, the animation is silky smooth and the fun is limitless. The single player missions play well and will impress you. It is just a great game!

The multi player is good but not as awesome as Rush 2049. The animation and graphics hold up greatly in the multi player and that is note worthy. The variety of gameplay modes is great and will ensure that you and your friends won't be bored quickly.

The multi player gives Red Dog a heap of replayability and makes this a good purchase.
