Better than the competition

I love Everquest 2. I've played the original Everquest since Pre-Kunark and I've played FFXI and this game, in my opinion, greatly surpasses those.

It's graphics are simply amazing. Best I've expierienced on any game I've played. The battle system is excellent. No longer do you stand around an enemy, hit it, wait 5 seconds for another hit, repeat, no it's very faster in EQ2, with a vast array of abilites to use as well. The raid zones are extremely fun, complex and just wonderful all around. Grouping is amazing too, everything come together very nicely and, as some previous reviews complained about, you do gain expierience debt if a party member dies. Many people are blowing this out of proportion, you lose 1% of your level, and it is a good thing, if you know you have something to lose when group members die, you will be more motivated to keep them alive and play to the best of your ability.

Now to put some of the complaining in perspective:

While there is a lack of solo-content, there is enough to keep most people satisfied. One thing you should realize before you buy this game is that it is a MMORPG. Why would you buy a game, and pay a monthly subscription fee for it, that stresses community, interaction between other players, and grouping in the process if you want to remain isolated from everyone? Play Fable or Morrowind or something else, but for your own good don't buy this or any other mmorpg if you don't want to solo.

Another aspect some people seem to complain about is seeing "new" mobs look just like old ones. Show me one game, mmorpg or not, that doesn't use the same graphics for stronger enemies as for weaker ones. Everygame from FFVII to the original Everquest does this.

One trend I've noticed in many of the negative reviews is that the reviewee's are all 25 and below. That's not very much expierience in a game. To use an analogy, that would be like buying a book, reading a page or do, and deciding that you don't like it before you know what its about.

But anyway, to recap what makes this game so great: Awsome graphics, extremely fun grouping and interaction between other players, fun combat system, and great questing. If you are a fan of mmorpg's, get this game, and you will probably love it as much as I do.

Very Limited Appeal to Only Certain Players

I played EQ2 from release. I am an experienced gamer, having played EQ for 5 years, AO for 3 years, WWIIOL for 3 years, AC2Beta, CoH, DAoC, EVE, and even SO.

Without a doubt, EQ2 has so many bells and whistles that the early part of the game should appeal to anyone.

+There is a great customization feature on creation that allows for some good face mixing, but no clothing.

+There is a good tutorial that gets the novice player right into the game.

+The starting quests further involve you in the workings of the game and no player should feel lost.

+The weapon, armor, and spell variety are sufficient to be interesting to almost everyone.

+The quests are generally rewarding, with only 30% or so being pointless duds for rewards.

+The class quests are simple, require a little thought, but aren't so harsh that 90% of the player base couldn't figure out how to finish.

+The mobs are very plentiful for rapid low-level advancement.

+Zones are instanced when the population gets heavy, meaning you'll have 2-4 other instances of the same zone to enter if one is far too crowded.

+Combat is fun with special moves available that drastically help a player win a hard combat.

But sometimes the bells and whistles ring flat.

-The special combat moves are not intuitive and require offline study to understand.

-Players "mash" buttons in groups - meaning that special moves are very hard to pull off in almost all groups. Unless you have consistent friends who all agree to pursue the moves, don't count on getting any off.

-As a player reaches the mid-teens in level, the mobs become under-conned. Meaning, you will need to start grouping.

-As you hit your 20s, the experience penalties begin hitting so severely that many players will quit a group if just one player dies.

-In certain areas, 1 healer will not suffice. 2 or more are required. Much time is spent waiting for a second healer before adventuring. Many times, the group breaks up before a 2nd healer is found.

-The experience grind is so bad that only someone with 4-6 hours per night can hope to progress, considering that an hour or two is spent making a group and hoping that no one dies.

Taken together, this is NOT a solo-friendly game, and after playing into my 20s, this game took on the ugly aspect of WORK. The game is not suitable for duos, either (my wife and I play together).

Unless you are prepared to spend HOURS hoping for a good group each night of 4-6 people, then don't buy this game.

**It might be worth the purchase if you intend to stay in the lowbie levels.

**It is definitely worth the purchase if you are a power-gamer with 6+ hours per day available to spend.

--It ain't worth your money if you're looking for a game to carry your poor solo or duo butt(s) through more than a month of play.

RECOMMENDATION: Consider the above three types of player carefully before you buy.

Great game!

Everquest 2 (EQ2) is a great game. Just visit {EDITED} and read the details, see the screenshots and videos, etc.

By the way, don't be fooled by all the bad reviews posted here. It's graffiti. A bunch of kids are posting bogus reviews of EQ2 around the Internet. They are trying to promote a game called {EDITED}

The truth is, if your ten-year old child sleeps on {EDITED} sheets, you should probably get him that game. And when he grows out of that phase, he will want EQ2.

If you are looking for a game for anyone else, get them EQ2. It is better than {EDITED} in every way: graphics, content, playability, fun, replay value, etc.

Forget this game if you want to solo

First get used to waiting an hour or longer before being forced to group with a couple of eleven year-old kids and a foul-mouthed sixty year-old, because if you like soloing even a little bit you can forget about this game. In addition the tech specs are way high-end and you will need to splurge out on a graphics card of at least around the $300 range or the game gets as choppy as a chinook in a crosswind. {EDIT}. Strictly for diehard Everquest 1 players with more money than sense.

First of all, the graphics will blow you away. It would also appear as if the problems with lag in heavily populated zones have been corrected - at least for now that is. The audio is great, the NPCs talk now. And I love the merchant system. Save time and buy it locally for a little more, or save money and run for it a little ways.
I was a casual user of EQ at best, but this rocks and I'm completely hooked. Goes public as soon as they stop pushing back the dates, hopefully mid Nov. last I heard. Try the free month when it hits. If you liked EQ then this is definitely worth a look.

Newbies rejoice!

I've read some of the reviews posted here and it sounds as though most experienced MMORPG-ers are jaded. As a longtime fan of RPGs, I decided to make EQ2 the game that introduced me to the online experience. So far it's been awesome. The game really has an epic feel to it. As a noob, I appreciated the time on the island to hone my skills and get used to the interface as well as learning to interact with other players. Leveling up early on is easy, as I was able to reach level 6 (fighter) the first night playing with the help of voice-over tutorials. Developing artisan skills is also important and again, was made simple with the help of our trusty narrator. The only problem I've encountered thusfar was the servers going down on the 3rd night the game was online, but I'll chalk that up to growing pains. This review may or may not help you as I really don't have anything to compare this with, but as a newcomer to this genre, I am well pleased with what I've seen so far and am thrilled at the prospect of future adventures with EQ2. I highly recommend it.

An excercise in tedium

As someone who has played many MMORPGs I felt compelled to respond to this post.

First off I played in both the EQ2 and WoW open betas and subscribed to both games after launch.

For EQ2 I have a 20 Fury and a 17 Crusader still active. Leveling in this game is very tedious and boring and one really has to rely on other players to help, it's very hard and slower to try and solo and with some of the quests it's darn near impossible unless one is several levels higher than the level of the quest (which means no or little experience while killing monsters in the quest)

People say well it's a MMORPG and community is everything; I tend to disagree with this while community is a good thing knowing I can work independently too is very very good.

Also if you like playing healers (like me) in EQ2 you can't heal someone while not grouped this goes to raisind dead people. This stinks because sometimes it gives me great satisfaction to be able to help someone who is about to die. This is community too.

Lag in EQ2 is very very bad, sometimes it gets you killed or prevents you from healing others in time before they are killed. This is not an issue with just my system because it's pretty my system good and almost everyone I talk to playing EQ2 has this problem.

Also money in EQ2 is very frustrating to obtain. Nuff said!

In WoW I have a level 12 druid and I am free to level how I deem fit. I can help people, group, go solo, and money doesn't seem to be a big problem because if I have to grind for quick cash I can without dying a lot.

Not nearly as much lag and usually I don't get any.

Finally, if you're going to pay monthly for a gaming service it should be fun. If I were to pay to do something tedious and boring I'd go volunteer myself to some mundane corner of society that needs people that like being bored and frustrated.

What are you bashing? The game or the company?

I've seen a lot of folks on here that have rated this game one star simply becasue it is made by Sony. Judge Sony how you like, but I feel this is a fantastic game.

Some positives:

-Customizeable character: Not quite as customizeable as City of Heroes, but years better than the original EQ.

- New grouping system: If you're signing up for EQII and planning on having one of your uber-high-level buddies login and powerlevel you, you're in for a shock. You get to group with players six levels up or six levels below you. Anything more and NONE of your encounters give experience.

- New looting system: Lotto! Need I say more?

- The graphics: Are the most incredible I've ever seen for a MMORPG. Which brings me to my one negative...

-The Graphics. I run an AMD Athlon 2600 with 512MB of RAM and a GeForce 4 Ti vid card with 128MB. Outside the cities, I can leave the settings on balanced, which still provides for some stunning graphics. Unfortunately, inside the cities a much lower setting is required to compensate for the lag. I've also noticed the longer you stay on line, the worse the lag gets.

To sum this up, I wholeheartedly recommend this game to people who have a lot of time on their hands they need to get rid of. On the other hand, if you have a problem hunting the same prey over and over again, perhaps you should try some other game.

Oh, and for the kiddie who whined about not getting his time back after the EQ servers were down in January, you may want to check your statement. Sony gave 3 DAYS free to every player, and jacked up the XP for all players as well for a full week. I have also ahd no server crashes since, with the exception of the daily server reset, which happens with every MMORPG.

EQ, but *NOT* EQ.

First, the good side:

) Nice graphics.

Second, the bad side:

) Nice graphics. Unless you're rich, and can afford a Geforce 6800 256MB PCI-E card on a P4 3.8GHz machine with 2GB of DDR2 RAM, this game will lag to death.

) XP Debt. For some reason, no one at Sony has been listening to the thousands of complaints about XP Debt for the last few years. Now, when you die, everyone pays for it. What the hell?!

) Want to solo? Forget it.

I'd like to smack the person who makes the rules at Sony. Apparently, he/she's never played an MMORPG. Until they get smart, I'm moving to WoW.

SoE's BIG mistake

First, the game is beautiful and loads of fun to play but SOE has let alot of their loyal eq customers down by limiting you to 4 Characters per Account! We(the beta testers)for weeks gave feedback and constructive reason for allowing more than 4 per account. They ignored us. So, if you are one of the people who likes to try all the class/race combos but hates deleting a character that you might like to come back to; it seems SOE for whatever reasom doesnt care. For me EQ's replayability and the number of characters I could have and play were what kept me hanging around for 5 years.
