A great start for Game Boy

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 1 / 1

Originally reviewed at Last-Gen.com:

The Nintendo Game Boy was a huge success thanks to AAA titles like Super Mario Land to boost sales at launch on 1989. The first-ever Mario platformer on a handheld, it is a faithful-yet-quirky game that's a trip down memory lane.

While video games at home were getting much more sophisticated by 1989, handhelds were still in its infancy. Mario had already been a household name by then thanks to Super Mario Bros. on the NES, and Mario was exactly what the budding Game Boy needed to succeed.

Familiar characters and gameplay welcome the player without much of a learning curve, but there are some distinct differences. While the NES counterpart had castles as their main theme, Mario this time around travels to Egypt, China, and even another planet. Goombas and Piranha Plants make a comeback along with the upgraded Koopa Troopas, who now explode upon getting stepped on. Other enemies include aliens, sphinxes, and Chinese ghosts. There are also a couple side-scrolling shooter type levels that keep the game interesting.

The music was memorable and catchy, very fitting for the levels. The ending theme is also nice, but it doesn't feel very "Mario." I also didn't feel that the game ended on a positive note, as the last level was a side-scrolling shooter -- not a very "Mario" way to wrap up a game. As with most Mario games at this era, the story is transparent as usual. The level designs are still creative and fun to play, but game is short with only 4 worlds with 4 levels each -- it's to be expected since there's no saving feature (run out of AA batteries and you're starting over). Also not so surprising is the lack of a 2-player option.

Super Mario Land definitely shows its age, but it's still a very fun game to play. It may only take you one sitting to beat, but the current cheap prices for the game should merit a purchase for the Mario fan.

Classic Game Boy

One of the first games I got for game boy. I enjoyed it, but it was challenging. Means high replayability. I beat it a few years after I got it. There's more than you'd expect to explore in this game. The soundtrack starts annoying, but there are a few good tracks on it (esp my fave Level 4: Chai!).

Basically, Mario does what he did in Super Mario Bros, but it's a different princess, and the 4 worlds are based on real world locations (like Easter Island). If you're into classic gaming or you are aspergic, you'll enjoy this game. These days, though, newcomers to this game might be a bit separated from the game b/c of it's presentation. But I've enjoyed this game for years even if I graduated to Final Fantasy.

It's fun, but the graphics aren't too good. It's not as good as the Nintendo 64 version. It's challenging for kids which makes it fun for a long time. I recommend this as a good game.

Fun for a while...

Super Mario Land is fun, but after a while, it can get boring. The graphics really aren't that great, and they're really small. I couldn't get past level 3-3 because it's impossible. I hope this review helps you.

I Love Mario and am not a kid iam 13 and have been playing mario for 10 years from Super Nintendo to now.I love Mario games,And i love Violent killing games like GTA-Dare i bring that in.

This is the worst Mario game i`ve ever played though Super Mario Land 2 Was MUCH better, infact that is one of the best 2D Mario games i`ve ever played. Its very small and everythings just a Midget-i never owned it but my friend Blase had an old black and white GameBoy (tm)(that was like 3 years ago she has a GBA now) and so did another friend Kayley on GBC(she now owns a Nintendo DS) I would avoid this and play SML2 Or SMB:Deluxe or new Mario games on GBA and Nintendo DS,GameCube.

Too short

I started playing the game and knew right away something was wrong. The graphics were very tiny and hard to cocentrate on.
The control was pretty good and the music was awesome. My complaint is that the game is too short! I beat this game in 10
minutes! I was really disgusted that I already beat the game.
I sold this game to a friend at school and he seems to like it
. It has been 4 months and he's only on level four. I only
recomend this game to people who stink at video games. They probably finish the game in a couple of years which is the time
it took me to learn how to run a 4 marathons without getting tired. If you're good at video games and you buy this game, I promise you you'll be needing 999 quintillion bottles of maalox.

GREAT!

This game is so much fun!
The music is great! The gameplay is great! the controlls are great!
And, although it would be nice if it could save your progress, it was made in '89.

Very small charcters even for a gameboy game. Only get if you have all the other Mario and Wario gameboy games. This is the first and the worst. Who to you think you are Daisy? You will never be Peach.
