HL Blue Shift - In the dark.

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 1 / 1
Date: July 04, 2001
Author: Amazon User

Blue Shift doesn't do justice to the HL series. There's nothing new in weaponry or enemies, and there's only a limited selection of weapons overall. There are a few clever things done in the game (I won't spoil it for those of you who still plan on buying), but nothing to compare with HL or OP4.

By far the thing that bugged me the most is that I had to use my flashlight for almost the entire game. I'm not kidding. Almost every part of the game was dark and drab. It was very disappointing.

The game wasn't very long, either. Definitely shorter than OP4.

On the flip side, the game does give you a peak into Black Mesa again. Plus, the HD pack that comes with it does give certain enemies/items a new look that's kinda cool.

On the whole, I was disappointed.

Dont Blink!

Dont blink! By the time you open your eyes the game will be over. I was so excited by this new half-life release that I placed an advance order, and I am really dissapointed.

If you are familiar with the half-life series you know what to expect. Great graphics, great story line, and of course great fun. However, I think that the guys over at sierra have a lot of nerve considering the length of this game.

I am not someone who sits for hours and hours playing, Nevertheless, I finished this game with in two days. If you dont care about the short ride than I suggest you spend the money. On the other hand, if you are like me, and expect to get what you pay for, than hold on to your money and get a game thats worth the money, such as Deus Ex.

Paying the phone bill

Blue Shift is more of the fantastic Half Life series, but not nearly enough. It's over way too quickly -- I repeat, way too quickly -- though what there is is, as usual, super At the end, I had the uneasy feeling that gearbox and VALVe, co-creators of the great Half Life sequel, Opposing Forces, made Blue Shift secondly to satisfy the insatiable appetities of Half Life fans, and firstly to pay their phone bills. Thirty-plus bucks is a lot for so little. My advice: wait till the game goes on sale.

Yes, I enjoyed it.

Im just done playing BS, quite a challenge. Im very new to the HL game/series. I have an edition without the OF. Otherwise the rest of the the stuff were on the disc. Since Im a very new HL-fan it didnt take that much to impress me. However, I am a bit disappointed that: 1) There was so much playing in the dark. I had to wait for my flahlight to recharge. Not funny and not so good for your eyes either I think. 2) No new monsters or weapons. Too bad. They could at least have added the aliens from OF. Anyway, I liked the HD-pack, and the game had some real hard puzzles. I had to 'cheat' and look on planethalflife's site twice... I did not finish the game that quickly but ok, it was over a bit too fast I think... Anyway Im glad they relased this game, I want more and more and more games in the HL-series...

it should be good

if this game is as good as the other two it should be awesome. this game puts you as Barney Jones. a security gaurd for the black mesa facility. it's your mission to help you and other scientists get out of there. with a new high definition game play and 32-multiplayer this might be a game of the year.

Sierra is dead

That is my oppinion of Sierra. They should fold. They are the only game manufacturer that consistantly produces interesting products that are so error prone, or infested with bugs(Blue Shift) that its just not worth purchasing from them anymore. They're incompetent. What happened to you Sierra? What happened to QA? What happened to attention to detail? How the mighty have fallen! Sierra has the only web page with a searchable FAQ devoted to errors and bugs. For example, you type BLUE SHIFT, press enter, and your querry will return an FAQ the size of Texas. An FAQ that TRYS to address all the problems with Blue shift(thats funny). It appears that the only bug free program Sierra makes nowdays is SIERRA UTILITIES, but like all recent Sierra products, it too is worthless!!

REST IN PEACE SIERRA!!

What updated graphics?

I expected alot more improvement in Half Life and Opposing Force from the HD pack than there was. Characters certainly don't look any different. Blue Shift is a fair game. Nothing overly spectacular, though. Wait for it to be sold at a discount before you buy it.

Needed More Bang For The Bucks!

This game needed to have more to it. A LOT more to it. The ending of Half-Life was spectacular, even though I HATED those Xen levels. The ending for this is weak, not terrible, but weak.

They needed to add some new monsters and I wish they had dumped things about Half-Life I didn't like. Like lose the headcrabs, the Xen level, and add some new monsters and a better ending. And hey, how about using some different actors for the scientists and other guards so they don't all sound the same?

All in all only a decent game at best. Sierra should just release the Maverick Developments Wanted! add on instead of this. Wanted! needed a better ending too though, just like Blue Shift. You can did that, can'tcha?

Blue Shift - not worth your money

Half-Life: Blue Shift lets you play as the obese police officer Barney Calhoun.
The first thing that will strike experienced HL players is the fact that BS is extremely short. Having only 20-odd levels, anyone with even a passing interest for first-person shooters will finish it in 3-4 hours. ( I have done it in 2)
The game's brevity could be forgiven if it's content was of high quality, but once again, BS's levels and game content are nothing to rave about. Following the same principle that HL popularized of having small level clusters, BS's levels are not given a chance to show their full potential.
Most of the levels seemed like a work of amateur designers.

You are better off purchasing Counter-Strike and playing that instead of throwing your money away on Blue Shift.
