Expansive world...simplified and User Friendly...

One of the most common complaints about The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind that I encountered, was that there was so much to do that once could literally get lost within the myriads of exploration, quests and other random experiences that Morrowind has to offer. A player could literally have up to 12 quests at one time to complete, and for the non-hardcore RPG fan, this could get VERY daunting.
One can argue that games like Morrowind are made strictly for the hardcore RPG'r in mind and that casual and non RPG fans should not even be dabbling in Morrowind's greatness. The level of freedom inherent in Morrowind is unmatched.
And Morrowind is a great game, a very great game! Its vastness is unlimited and there is so much to do and so much to explore that upon first contact, a players mind can literally breakdown at all the possibilities.
Never before has a game provided so much to a player. There a at least 16 different guilds to join, countless class structures and character types to choose from, endless objects to buy, sell and steal, and many NPC's to slay, and a super expansive world with oceans, mountains, forests, cities, ruins, dungeons and much more to explore, Morrowind is probably one of the best RPG games on the planet.
Oblivion, the followup to Morrowind, is a very huge, open world in the same respect, however it is smaller. Many of the class types have been removed, weapons have been taken out, spells missing and some skills have been taken out. The traditional role playing configure that governs battle has been simplified, and generally much of the games core features have been changed in Oblivion.
Why?
The term user-friendly usually means making something so simple that an idiot could use it. AN example would be Microsoft WIndows.
Oblivion is the more user-friendly experience than Morrowind is. Morrowind bombards the player with limitless paths to choose from, Oblivion offers only a few handfuls.
Everything from the level up system, to customization has been simpified.
Oblivion is basically an action/adventure game with an RPG mask. Sure, there are many RPG elements involved, yet the game screams action/adventure.
For instance, combat has drastically changed. In Morrowind, hitting an enemy with a sword or arrow was largly dependant on die rolls and skill level, which lead to players frantically hacking and slashing at an enemy only to actually "hit" them occasionally (of course this changes as one advances levels). In Oblivion, the combat is not based on die rolls and skill level, but rather based on whether your sword or arrow "actually" hits the enemy.
This, in my opinion changes the game from a traditional RPG to a more action orientated game.
Levitating and transportation spells have been removed. I have been told that this was done to avoid glitches in the game that could occur due to how the towns and locations are set up. The major transportations systems have been removed in favor of instant travel and horses.

However, even with all these changes, Oblivion is still one of the best games ever created. The level of customization, exploration and freedom given to the player is still much more than any other game offers, even more than the famed Grand Theft Auto Series.
Not to mention the graphics are absolutely amazing. Trees actually look like trees, there is plant life, animal life (outside those that attack you), the sky moves above you, day turns to night, the ocean looks beautiful. Mountains that you can see in the distance can also be traversed. Character models have been greatly enhanced, with facial expressions and all! Graphically, Oblivion is up there with Gears of War.
The sound is also amazing, characters speak with spoken dialogue, not just written text, and the ambient and atmospheric sounds all do well to keep your head in the game and immerse the player in the world of Oblivion.
AI has been greatly improved, to the point where NPC's(Non playable characters) are all living out their lives and not just walking around randomly or standing in one spot for the whole game.
You may be walking through a lovely grassy area only to catch yourself in the middle of two people fighting to the death (this is something Morrowind NEVER had, aside from scripted events).
Shopkeepers have their own agenda and schedule, and will close their shops during the night (of which you can break in and rob them blind, and the shopkeeper will even talk about how he/she got robbed the next day!).
NPC's talk to other NPC's and engage in conversations, all of which you can eavesdrop in on.

The talking system has been enhanced as well. When you talk to an NPC it is much more simplified than in Morrowind. A mini game is presented when you select the pursuasion option. Basically, talking to NPC's is much more engaging, whereas in Morrowind it got tedious and boring.

The world is lively and breathing and it is very easy to get caught up in this immersive world.
There is much trash talking about how short this game is and how "dead" the world feels compared to Morrowind, however I beg to differ!
Oblivion is much more alive, and who really cares if the game developers shaved off 200 hours off of the gameplay? There is still over 200 hours of gameplay in Oblivion to play with, who really needs 400 hours of gameplay? With 200 hours of gamplay, any reasonable gamer will have plenty to do. If you can beat this game in a week, you need to get a life.

With much more action orientated gameplay and stunning graphics and AI, Oblivion does not disappoint and will provide you with hours of excellent gameplay that will seriously suck your life away. This game is just about as addicting as Gears of War is, which is VERY addicting!

One of the best games I've ever played

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is a fantastically executed RPG. With hundreds of hours of gameplay and a huge map to explore, I don't see how anyone can't get lose weeks of their life playing this game. It is as close to perfect as a game can get.

A triumph of quantity over quality

I had very high hopes purchasing this game for my Xbox 360 - being a big RPG fan and having played Morrowind and enjoying it I thought I could'nt go wrong.
Now, 50+ hours of gamplay later I find myself more frustrated with the game than actually enjoying it. It simply does not live up to the hype (94 out of 100 metacritic score ? Ridiculous!)

The biggest problem is the scaled levelling system, which means that your character basically does not improve his skills. Fighting goblins is as hard after 50 hours of gameplay as it was when you began the game.
No doubt this has been made because of the non-linear gameplay - a character has to be able to go anywhere and fight anyone no matter which level he is on. But it completely destroys the idea of having a level system at all. Bethesda could have chosen a more GTA-esque approach, creating an action game instead of an RPG. In my opinion the whole idea of RPG is destroyed if you make a levelling system this way. If you enjoy building a character, being able to fight bigger and meaner enemies along the way, this is not a game for you.

Secondly I find the story kind of boring. Bethesda advertised Oblivion as being a new approach to the RPG genre, an interactive universe. Personally I find the NPC's boring, mostly they only have two or three lines, and if they - which they seldom do - have a quest for you it is your basic "go this place and fetch me that thing". In reward they'll give you money you have absolutely no use for. If you want weapons, armour or magical intems, the only way to get them is to win them in battle. The shops have NOTHING.

Finally, the game is way too big. After pillaging ten caves, forts or mines, they all look like each other. Whats the idea of having a million places to go that all look and feel similar ?? More enrgy should have been put into creating a DIVERSE universe with fewer NPC's with more personality.

Just so that you know where I'm coming from - I find the best RPG-experience I have ever had to be Dragon Quest VIII for the PS2 - a game that has everything Oblivion lacks.
A proof that next-generation does not always mean improvement.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is definitely one of my favorite games of all time. Period. The storyline is said to take at least 200 hours of playing time, so it will last a while. The graphics are nothing like I've ever seen before. There are more side quests than any of the other Elder Scrolls games. The soundtrack is incredible. The sound effects are incredible. The thing I love about Oblivion (and all the Elder Scrolls games) is the Medieval feel that also reminds me of Lord of the Rings. Its simply much more fun than more futuristic games because although it is fantasy, the enviroment itself is believable.

The options in Oblivion are also huge. There are many species to choose to be your character, such as Orc, Breton, Dark Elf, Nord, Argonian, and Khajiit, just to name a few.

The playable world itself is enormous. Included with the game is a poster sized map. To travel quickly, Oblivion has a fast travel system that works extremely well. Without it, it'd take hours just to reach a nearby city. Another method of quick travel is horses. Horses can be bought (costing anywhere from 500 to 5000 gold coins) and used to travel to places where fast travel isn't enabled, such as locations in the wilderness.

Oblivion also has an extrodinary number of weapons, apparel, magic, skills, and classes. There are swords, hammers, axes, daggers, bows, and magic staffs. For apparel, there is everything to a simple shirt to a set of heavy armor. There are several magic classes, such as Conjuration, Illusion, Destruction, Altertion, Mysticism, Restoration, and Alchemy. In Combat, the classes are Block, Armorer, Heavy Armor, Blunt, Blade, Athletics, and Hand to Hand.

Oblivion has an incredible variety of everything that could ever be wanted in an RPG. The graphics are flawless, the sound is great, the fighting is fun, (as is the simple exploration) and overall, Oblivion is well worth every penny.

Say hello to the next 200 hours of your life

elders scroll review from all aspects

Elders scroll may seem limit less but it isnt, although It is a massive map. Meaning It takes time to walk from one end to the other. The AI in the game are well done for a non online game but after a long while of playing it, they start to seem like AI. A good game will make its AI almost like a real person or living creature. Since this game has a very wide range of different AI and how each character will act and respond to you, it'll take time for you to notice the similarities. There are a lot of missions so it should keep you busy. It takes time to level up but choosing a race is almost usless in the long run. The reason is that you can control when you want the game to be difficult and when to be easy. This is one fault that the game has I think. As you level up, it doesn't get easier for you to kill the enemies, it becomes harder. If you want to feel like your actually leveling up then slightly decrease the difficulty manually anytime during the game as you level up. The good part to this game is that it doesn't get boring quickly. You would have to literally complete all the missions to become bored of the game. Also, everything you do affects how you level up. Like I said, in the long run it wouldnt matter because you would max everything. I had a light armor character thats only supposed to use light armor but if you use heavy armor and max out your ability to use it, then It is exactly like light armor but even better. And this goes along with all the abilities you use. A cool feature of the game is that you can make your character look almost like yourself if you took the time to play around with the facial options. You can pick a character already made or you can create your own and start molding its face around to look like you. If you want to go on a killing spree at the end of this game or when ever you think you can take out the gaurds, you will be dissappointed when the main character guards just magically come back to life over and over and over. So after figuring this out, the game was over with because there is nothing much you could do after the missions. Don't get me wrong, your going to spend over 100 hours in this game trying to max your character, explore the dongeons, the forest's, mountians, complete the missions, and basically truely "BEAT" the game. I give this game for the X BOX 360 a 10 out of 10 with out the online capabilities. For my personal gaming experience, I give this game a 8 out of 10 due to the completion of the missions, and how the AI start to look like AI. If they were almost true to life like characters, which is very hard to do so I'll give credit to the people that made this game but if you want to really impress a gamer, make me believe that the AI are real and they don't have a fixed agenda, which is close to impossible to do. If you dont have online capabilities, then this is truely a game you have to get. But once you join online gaming, you will not want to waste time playing anything else or go back to second hand best. You wont be dissappointed in this game if you buy it. It is truely a fun and interesting game. Oh yeah one more thing, the story line will make you feel like a hero in the game.

The game is a 5 star game

The Elder Scrolls IV is a great fantasy role playing game. The grapics are great. It has hours and hours of entertainment. The only problem is once you start playing the time goes by and it is 4 AM and you are worn out the next day. Buy it!

This game is really incredible. First of all, it took me about 175 hours to do everything. I realize some people can have issues with this, but i personally like it. Second, you can do so much. Want to be a hero? There's the main quest. Want to be a mage? There's the mage's guild. Want to be a theif? There's the theives guild. Want to be an assassin? There's the Dark Brotherhood. And you can be a part of all of these at the same time too. Next on my list, this game can actually be pretty intense. When you are walking through a silent cave with t only the water dripping and suddenly a zombie comes running at you it can make your heart stop.

Besides the game, the gameplay is also awsome. I get made at alot of games were the best armor and weapons are hard to find. In this game, as you level up the chances of you getting the best armor get higher and higher. The variety of spells you have is cool too. You can do anything from opening a lock to summoning a daedra to sending a blast of fire into your enemy's face. One thing that I am not so sure I like is that your enemy's level as you do. This means several things. One, the game does not get easier as easily as most RPG's. If you play your cards exactly right, you can be at the best possible skill at level 53 but this is very hard. The actual fighting is simple yet ridiciuosly fun. The actions are simple to do, but knowing how to them in a way to slaughter your enemies can be difficult.

The graphics are amazing. Totally top notch. There are no unofficial loading times and the game never freezes. If for simply seeing an incredible world I would reccomend this game.
Finally the actual story is great. Every quest has a twist and every twist has a twist and it all comes down to something you never would have though of.
