Ahriman's Gift - A True Gift for RTS Players!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 12 / 12
Date: November 21, 2001

If you like Kohan - Immortal Sovereigns, you definitely would want to get your hands on this one. It brings the best strengths from Immortal Sovereigns and also adds new features and campaigns to the game. New character classes are added and also some new magical spells. The tutorial session is the best tutorial session that I've seen compared to many other RTS/Real Time Strategy games.
Overall, you are in for a pleasant surprise with this game!

Stands out from the pack - but for hardcore RTS fans only

This game is perfectly suited to the hardcore RTS fan, but I felt compelled to write a review for people who enjoy Real Time Strategy games but are *not* hardcore gamers.

If you are a hardcore gamer and like RTS, you will love this game. The game world abstraction is superior to almost every other RTS (drawing heavily from the excellent 'Settlers of Catan' boardgame, and from hex-based table top battle games) and game play is challenging and addictive.

If, however, you are more of a casual player - you enjoy messing around with, say, 'Command and Conquer', but you never really found the time to finish it - you would be strongly advised to try the demo first and not to buy it blind. The game is unforgivingly hard on the casual player (and does not allow for much defensive play, largely forcing you to blitzkrieg your opponents if you are to have any hope of winning).

As a trivial aside, turn based fans will almost be able to play in a turn-based fashion by slowing the game speed to 25%, making decisions, and then speeding it up to 400-1600% for a few seconds. It's a clumsy way to play, but then this wasn't designed as a turn based game.

People who bought 'Kohan: The Immortal Sovereigns' may feel that this is a little expensive for a largely identical game engine with new campaigns, but the Kohan diehards will be glad of the new material. It feels a lot like an add on pack, but costs like a new game.

Although certainly not destined for mainstream success anytime soon, the Kohan series is definately going to develop a loyal and satisfied cult following.

Wow.

The game is superb and unlike anything I've seen before.

If you're a fan of strategy, you will *love* this. My only complaint is that the game was far too short. The writers did a fantastic job with the storyline, it was beautiful, filled with emotion, ambition, betrayl, absolutely a stellar performance!!

I hope they come out with a new one! PLEASE!

Strategically deep

Kohan: Ahriman's Gift is a fine Real Time Strategy game, with the emphasis on Strategy. Unlike many RTS games, which focus more on tactics and force the player to control a mob of units as a mass or one individual at a time, K:AG gives the player control at the squad level, and provides a wealth of tools for higher level control. Multiple squads can be organised into consistent formations, forming easily controlled phalanxes. Economic development is simple, and abstract, and enjoys the same wealth of high level control tools the squads do. Uncontrollable technological improvements, random monsters, and independant races that can be brought over to your cause keep the game fresh for many, many replays.

On the downside, the AI opponents are somewhat weak & predictable, even at the highest difficulty level. This is an easily overlooked flaw for any player with a net connection, as the matchmaking services for the game nearly always show one or more openings at any hour of the day.

The demo makes the game worth buying

I found the demo I got to be quite a challenge, until I found the right strategy. If the demo is true to the game, this is a MUST for any gamer.

Excellent Strategy Game!

Kohan: Ahriman's Gift is without a doubt the best strategy game I have ever played. Great class balance, graphics, upgrade structure and map generator. This is the first strategy game I ever played, and found it quite beginner-friendly, in addition to being a game I keep going back to after trying others.

This game IS the best RTS game out there - only problem it had was there was no Marketing. Alot of work went into the game and it shows. GamePlay is consistenly great. This game is a Must BUY, - Only game to buy.

Old game - But still the best RTS out there.

Just re-ordered this because I had lost my original many moons ago. In my opinion Kohan is still the best RTS on the market. The economics, unit tactics, unit composition, and supply zones all blend to provide the thrill of a RTS with the meaty satisfaction of a TBS. Cannot recommend enough.
