Get the Grand Theft Auto Double Pack first

Yeah, this is still pretty good (it's made by the same companies that made V8), but in the end, it feels like a cheap GTA clone.
The GTA Double Pack(XBox)is the best looking game i've played and the gameplay can't be matched. This is like what happened with the Getaway. It looked pretty good(graphics wise), but the 2 year delay makes it look outdated. It was a good game, but not even close to GTA 3. But anyway, they said it would kill GTA, looked what happened, the same will happen here. The fighting isn't that good either, it feels like Dead to Rights(Max Payne clone), but not quite as bad. I'd still get it, but after GTA.

here is a review from someone who spent time playing first

pros and cons compared to GTA vice
pros:
The fighting is much better, but you must earn the upgrades to make it better.

Hours of just driving around doing what you want like GTA.

The shooting is better, but u must also earn upgrades to make it better.
The driving area is much larger.

The missions are good, but more simple than GTA, but earning upgrades can get harder.

Cars are much cooler and take mor damage

cons:
to many of same cars and people in one area.

driving is harder with the thumb stick and can't be changed.

the sound is not diverse enough, but you can play songs already ripped to hard drive.
So overall this is an outstanding game that will give the GTA series a challenge and will hopefully improve with the next game just like GTA did with Vice City.

May Topple GTA

I was surprised by True Crime:Streets of LA. I was thinking it would be a cheap, GTA knock-off but it's actually a game that stands alone from GTA.

Good--Excellent graphics, sound, gameplay, and controls.

Bad--Hip Hop/Rap soundtrack with very few Rock songs mixed in, a little more diversity would've been better. But, thank the lord for the Xbox soundtrack. Also, the targeting system was a little annoying until you got the first 4 upgrades because you'd be standing in one place for about 3 seconds while the enemy was whailing into you so you could target them. A manual targeting system would've improved this greatly.

Ugly--Storyline was cheap and cliched. I mean, how many times have you heard the storyline of a "borderline cop who does things his way and doesn't want a partner"? Or "a young cop just out of the academy trying to fill his father's shoes"?

YES it is a GTA wannabe

I won't bother you with details because too many have written reviews already. Bottom line is: True Crimes IS a GTA "wannabe." It does have its own ups and downs. I had fun with it, but the fact that the final fight requires you to master a fighting system that is absolutely terrible was a big disappointment. I was hoping for something better. You can't judge a whole game by its ending, however, so I give it 3 stars.

Asian Superhero? Jackie chan says it could work!

I love this game, and the fact that the hero is actually someone not in the usual norm. Tall, Rugged, White/Black - it says something about activision, that anyone can be a hero (and reckless). This game rocks, I thought it was a usual car driving game at first, but it's actually got everything, throw in a tank and a bunjee and it could rival halo 2. well, not really, but it's got a good script, and a hot woman. Graphics could be way better, but over all it's not bad.

Fun - the Controls Are Terrible

The controls are horrible - Im sorry - my controller isnt a computer. I like doing different things however there should be some intelligence built into the control. I walk over a gun thats better than mine - pick the damn thing up. The only challenge is learning the controls and its annoying not to mention the AI problems where I am shooting someone and cant hit them because the game is stuck. I actually had to quit and start over because of strictly AI problems. Not impressed - the premise is cool and the story line isnt bad but the controls need to be more linear and more repeatable. I dont have time to learn 80 different controller commands to play a game.

Why, oh why did I ever let my brother talk me into going halfs for this thing?

This game is an absolute atrocity.
-The controls are a real pain in the ass. If you can switch targets while on auto-aim it's too difficult to do while firing (since I haven't figured it out yet).
-It's incredibly short, I beat it all (upgrades, alternate routes, etc.) in 2 days.
-The songs are irritating beyond any kind of description. I'm not a "all rap sucks" kind of person, but if you play this game and don't care for or against rap you'll hate it (rap) for the rest of your life.
-The weapons are terrible, you only get two handguns. You can pick up guns from criminals but they run out of ammo real quick.
-The Sub-missions are a lousy waste of time. Stopping carjackers and marital disputes gets incredibly boring real fast in this game. And most of the time when you try and arrest someone they run away, and your good cop rating goes down for shooting or beating them up. Whenever a gang is firing at cops they kill you almost instantly because your character is too stupid to pull his guns out. Or if someone pulls you out of a car and shoots you your good as dead.

There's not enough time in the world to tell how lousy this game is. If it wasn't part-my-brothers I would trade it in right now for a game that doesn't suck.

TRUE CRIME

You play a cop called Nick Kang who solves street crimes such as arresting rapist and kidnapist. The first thing you'll notice in the first 5 mins of the game are the decent cutcenes but they're nothing original.

Music

you get rap in this and there is Warren G, Snoop dog, Lil Eazy, E40 and Bone thugs n harmony and a lot more. There's is like 15 disks of music or more. I like Snoop dogs music but there was only dance with me and I didn't like it. If you haven't listeed to Bone thugs THUGGISH RUGGISH BONE you're in for a treat.

DRIVING

This is an okay game, I prefer it to the Getaway because the driving bits are faster and doesn't slow down because you can go through barriers and trees unlike the getaway. As driving you get random street crimes and they are repetetive, it's just the guy on your radio says different stuff like "this truck has activition video games stop it" or "stop kidnapper".
There is a good cop bad cop rating. If you run over innocents it goes down. You can kill bad guys if they've got guns and your rating won't go down.
You can shoot out of your car window or you can hold down the right trigger and it'll go into slowmo and you can shoot enemies legs to not kill them. You can get an upgrade on your car and you can hit the side tail of a car(whilst doing a 180)and cause it to spin out of control.
You can get boosts and burnouts was well but they aren't helpful. The helpful ones are drive on 2 wheels to dodge bullets and to do a 360 spin to take out the guy in the car quickly when he leasts exspects it.

FIGHTING.
Fighting beats GTA by miles. A is low kick, B is throw, X is punch and Y is high kick. Keep beating up someone and when he goes groggy it goes in slow mo. Then you finish him of with a move like monkey kick by pushing Y X. There are like 18 moves or more. The animation is cool, when doing a drop kick you fall to the ground then do a cool spin up on the ground. When enemies are on floor you can elbow drop them and more.

SHOOTING.
Shooting is great by doing side way dives to avoid getting shot. You can hold different weapons in each hand like machine guns.

STEALTH.
Stealth in this is crap. You just run through and push 1 button. You use deadly attack or stun. Stun is a karate chop and deadly is snapping thier neck, remember that E3 trailer in May/March 2003(I think) were it played the Above the law song and it showed Nick snapping that guys arm, it's a shame that you can't do that. You also get broken glass and more on the floor to dodge from not being herd.

DEVELOPERS if you reading please don't make another huge city because there's less quality. Ether redoo LA and concentrate on making missions longer, less repetitive and more fun.

Close, but not close enough...

The fighting system in the game was absolutely horrible. You have a one-two punch or kick that's not very effective when you're fighting. The computer has way more powerful punches and kicks that drasticly bring down your health. The only way to damage your opponents is to hit them with a special attack when they're stunned (GOOD LUCK ACHIEVING THAT GOAL). I won't totally bring down True Crime, since there were some good things in the game: Roaming the city and stopping steet fights was fun, frisking people for drugs, guns, etc., and rescuing people from kidnappers. One more thing I could never understand in gun fights -when you give someone a headshot, the game takes a point off your Good Cop Meter. This is ridiculous. The game has an excellent soundtrack from Snopp Dogg, N.E.R.D and other rap artist to keep the game moving. So this game by far wasn't that great -but only a good keeper.
