Yuck!

This game was so loud and obnoxious it gave me a headache. It just tries too hard to be a "street" game by dumb, wannabe "street" dialogue that is neither funny nor interesting. The controls are horrible! You run around the street trying to point your character towards the bad guy, and there is no "quick adjustment" to send the camera behind Nick (main character). It's a slow rotation--five punches at your head later from the bad guy.

It is LACKING in atmosphere. Atmosphere is what made GTA (Grand Theft Auto Series) a winner. I felt like i was in the world. With True Crime, I felt like I was playing an annoying video game.

Music: Can we fit more "F" words in a song? I mean, yes, once in a while it's fine, but it's almost as though they were going out of their way to fit as many curse words in the soundtrack as possible simply to call attention to itself. I'm not a fan of that type of music anyways, but there ARE songs from that genre (Rap etc..) that are good. Just, not many of them are in True Crime. GTA had a number of different genres to choose from, which was nice.

I would rent this game first. Don't fall for the commercials like I did (and I never will again)--let Blockbuster be your friend. If you like it--then buy it. But this is not the type of game I would blindly buy. Leave that to the GTA series....

GTA Vice is the way to go here. Honest it's much better

One word. This game sucks. I wasted $50 bucks. I only hope I can sell in on Ebay. the game play is boring and the cars look phony. There's really nothing to do that's entertaining after 2 hours of play. Why do I need all those bones to only unlock Snoop for 1 hour. That's B.S. ! You should be allowed to play the whole game as either character. The game play and graphics are 100 times better on Vice City. Learn from my mistake get GTA Vice first and leave this game on the shelf.

This game is very racist they divided them into gangs by race, it also is stupid. I don't like these types of games. I'd rather drive a car than this

Within the first minute that I saw the trailer for this pathetic piece of trash I was so upset. True Crimes take the idea and vision of GTA and throws in a weak, corny plot, horrid soundtrack and a clichéd bullet-time game play. Sure the graphics may be looking great and the destruction is fun for the first few minutes and then you get tired of the garbage. It's a down right shame that people actually like this crap over GTA: Vice City; awarded Best Action Game in the VGA awards. If you want superior action I highly recommend GTA 3 and GTA: Vice City. Both of those games combined are extremely addictive and exceptionally fun to play. Don't waste your money on this cheap P.O.S. copying, clichéd game.

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TRUE CRIME is the worst, cheap, generic, piece of garbage on the video game market! It was a gift I recieved for X-MAS and I want to return it.The control is pathetic the shooting in the is a joke and the music is HORRIBLE! I know it was ACTIVISION's eagerness to make a fast buck. Why? Because it is the holiday season. Those jerks have no idea as to what a game should be about. TRUE CRIME is nothing but a overpriced piece of trash. The graphics are average the audio sucks! The replay value is not worth mentioning. I played it for about 2 hours and I have to adimt," I RATHER DO MY LAUNDRY INSTEAD"!! Look people, we can not allow our money to taken by the hype of any game. The commercial is awesome on the game, but thats as far as it goes. I fell for it and feel completely robbed. I strongly suggest that you tell ten people how much this game stinks.Because I already did. Save your friend's money and tell them to rent it instead. And see for themselves how much a WASTE OF TIME it really is to play TRUE CRIME. ACTIVISION NEEDS TO GET A CLUE!!!!
SO SCREW THIS GAME "TRUE CRIME". Because the only "TRUE CRIME" that there really is, is paying full price for this piece of garbage.

Frustrating and boring!!!!

Lets start with the good things. Cutscenes and voice acting is top notch. The city is huge and its nice to see the santa monica pier and the freeway driving is sort of fun. Completely destroying a room in a hectic fight scene or shootout looks cool. I would say the first few hours will appear to be fun but then...on with the bad things. Camera angles are terrible at times. The graphics while driving is choppy. There is serious lag and slowdown in alot of the game. The load screens are plentiful and slowdown already slow gameplay. The A.I. is very flawed and you will see perps get stuck or hung up in walls. You can expect to get your car to get hung up and the game will freeze at times. The boss fights are just plain frustrating. You will end up throwing your controller more than once due to the fact the fighting controls stink and it seems that kick, punch, kick repeat is the only thing that works...but doesn't. Grapple moves hardly ever work. Everyone and there dog is a kung fu expert. The side missions get repeated way to often. Repeated stupid one liners will get said over and over. The shooting gets ok after some upgrades but still is not very good. The auto aim takes most of the fun out of the game. You will end up not even paying attention to the story line because it makes no sense and multiple ending only add to the confusion. The stealth missions. Well one minute your snapping necks...next minute your retrying the same mission over and over because you cant get past some poorly placed buckets due to the crappy controls. The "matrix" effect is plain...well boring and you will not miss it if you never use it. Overall this game gets boring fast...even after getting all the upgrades and you will end up rushing thru the game just to get it over with and probably never play it again. It tries to be the game with everything but does not succeed on any level. Truly a major disappointment. Fighting= Charlies angels except worse. Shooting= Dead to rights and max payne except way worse. Driving= GTA minus any good vehichles to drive. Stealth=Splinter cell minus anything that works. They forgot sniping and team play like ghost recon but that was probably to hard to mess up. Any good reviews of this game was probably by the people who made it. Rent it first or possibly waste your hard earned cash.

Not as good as all of the hype

Having played GTA I was very much looking forward to the release of True Crime: Streets of LA. The game itself is a little bit of a letdown as it seems to drag quite a bit in places. The driving portions are fairly fun, esp. when it is part of a high speed chase. However, the driving does get old after a while, and I found myself pursuing less and less of the street crime as the game went on. Also, the controls for Nick when walking seem a little ... odd. The default setting has you pushing the right thumbstick to the left to turn Nick right? Why? You get used to it after a while but it is initially pretty frustrating during foot chases. Also, wait until you try to play a game with Halo-like controls after this -- it will take you at least 1/2 hr. to readjust. The gunplay isn't bad, esp. at the shield /skill sessions where you can upgrade you skills. That seems to work relatively well.

That's really it for the good stuff, so now the bad. The game is extremely redundant to the point that it's annoying. You will see the same people, cars, and buildings over and over and OVER again, and sometimes this happens on the same street. The things that pedestrians say to you are pretty lame, too; count how many time you hear someone say "Aw shiznit. Aw diggity-damn" when there is a gunfight very nearby. Also, I think that this game is virtually devoid of any AI. The people trying to kill you (either in gun or fistfights) do the same things repeatedly. Even in the midst of a brutal gun battle on the street, people and cars that are less than 1/2 a block away from the action just walk / drive along like nothing is happening just a few feet up the road. However, I think that the worst aspect of this game is the graphics, which are really pretty subpar for XBOX. Here is just a short list of the things that I have noticed:
* Sometimes pedestrians are walking slanted to the ground on hills (instead of straight up)
* A couple times, Nick ran straight thought a conrete wall while chasing a crook, and there was no damage to either Nick or the wall!
* Body / car parts will frequently jut though solid walls (but we've seen this before, haven't we?)
* After a gun battle, you will frequently see bullet-holes floating in midair.
* I have seen Nick frisk or cuff a criminal while standing at least 5 ft. away from him.
* The character's faces, esp. mouth movement, are just terrible during cut scenes.

Overall, the game is weak. Wait until you get to mission 6 where you are in the tunnels beneath Chinatown. I won't give it all away, but I will leave you with a few hints: zombies, fire-head demons (a la Doom), giant fire dragon, and flaming ninja chics. Yes, these things are actually in a game called "True Crime". Also, almost every mission follows these steps: drive to scene, engage in fistfight, chase perp on foot or in car, tail a different perp from the 1st scene to next scene, follow him to the next scene, engage in 2-3 rounds of gunplay, bonus cruizin'. In every mission this happens! I think that this game must have been pushed very hard for a quick release to coincide with the GTA release on XBOX. The developers were sloppy, and they clearly ran out of ideas along the way.

All in all, the game is very mildly entertaining but nowhere near as good as GTA. Buy that for XBOX or the new Rainbow 6 game.

Oi

Why, oh why did I ever let my brother talk me into going halfs for this thing?

This game is an absolute atrocity.
-The controls are a real pain in the ass. If you can switch targets while on auto-aim it's too difficult to do while firing (since I haven't figured it out yet).
-It's incredibly short, I beat it all (upgrades, alternate routes, etc.) in 2 days.
-The songs are irritating beyond any kind of description. I'm not a "all rap sucks" kind of person, but if you play this game and don't care for or against rap you'll hate it (rap) for the rest of your life.
-The weapons are terrible, you only get two handguns. You can pick up guns from criminals but they run out of ammo real quick.
-The Sub-missions are a lousy waste of time. Stopping carjackers and marital disputes gets incredibly boring real fast in this game. And most of the time when you try and arrest someone they run away, and your good cop rating goes down for shooting or beating them up. Whenever a gang is firing at cops they kill you almost instantly because your character is too stupid to pull his guns out. Or if someone pulls you out of a car and shoots you your good as dead.

There's not enough time in the world to tell how lousy this game is. If it wasn't part-my-brothers I would trade it in right now for a game that doesn't suck.

Close, but not close enough...

The fighting system in the game was absolutely horrible. You have a one-two punch or kick that's not very effective when you're fighting. The computer has way more powerful punches and kicks that drasticly bring down your health. The only way to damage your opponents is to hit them with a special attack when they're stunned (GOOD LUCK ACHIEVING THAT GOAL). I won't totally bring down True Crime, since there were some good things in the game: Roaming the city and stopping steet fights was fun, frisking people for drugs, guns, etc., and rescuing people from kidnappers. One more thing I could never understand in gun fights -when you give someone a headshot, the game takes a point off your Good Cop Meter. This is ridiculous. The game has an excellent soundtrack from Snopp Dogg, N.E.R.D and other rap artist to keep the game moving. So this game by far wasn't that great -but only a good keeper.
