Best game I've ever seen!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 3

Well if your pondering about wether or not you should buy this game then I'll say this: This game is realy only for you if you've played Myst and loved it as much as I did. Also this game runs better on older computers and more importiantly older operting systems i.e. Windows 98. Don't ask me why, I think its becaus of its 'Hyper card' based system, thus most people I know couldn't run it on their newer more powerfull systems.

Eneyways thats the technicle stuff, now the game. The graphics are outstanding in every way, there photorealistic and very detaild, and the animations are just as amazing.

The consepts are the best I've ever seen in the Myst series, the sound is increadibly detaild in relation to Myst (if you don't use headphones your missing out on half the experianse). The music is just SO good that you can buy the soundtrack, and you should!
The Age of Riven itself is great becaus its just one huge Age (five conected islands to be sure) and giologically hanging by a thred.
And the ending just tops it all off, or writes it all off (you'll see).

Fantastic. How could anybody NOT like it?

How could anybody NOT like this magnificant game? I've always loved a challenge, and I found Riven was it. The Puzzles are difficult, but not "so-difficult-that-i-hate-this-game"...more of a difficulty which gives you that tingly feeling in your gut when you solve one of those big puzzles. This game teaches you patience, observation, and determination. That is the overall puzzle of Riven (and Myst of course)...if you give up because "it's rubbish" or "Its too hard" or "I hate the gameplay" or even "It's a slideshow", you fail at YET another puzzle which will be relevant to you in the future. You need to always keep your wits about you otherwise you'll miss something. The Animal puzzle, once I had finally cracked it after several months, I saw the video clip afterwards and, man did that give me the tingly feeling. Yes, there were 3 bits when I appealed to a friend for help...but those were 3 REALLY obvious points I should have been able to get. Don't blame the game because YOU can't do it. blame yourself for NOT SEEING it. Use thinking Those people who say "It's a slideshow"...think how much MORE time it would take to create the game. how much WORK the creators have to go through. How much DISK SPACE/SWAPPING there would be, how higher the MACHINE SPECS have to be. It's a good game, and you should appreciate the hard work, because Riven isn't gonna get any better than it is. Yes, realtime movement would be nice, but it ain't gonna happen without severe degrading of graphics, stalling and crashing computers, about 18 CDs and an extremely high price...and there'll MORE complaining. Teach yourself to read Machine specs before you buy. I've had minimum specs ever since I bought it and I've had no trouble

ok, enough gripe. Fantastic game - buy it at all costs :)

You may have to swallow a little pride.

I bought Riven 4 years ago and stopped playing it after getting completely frustrated. After rooting through some software, I reloaded it and decided to go to some hints pages (not walkthroughs). While I hated doing that, the hints steered me in the right direction, without giving me the answers, and I came to appreciate the integration of the puzzles and storyline, not to mention the excellent graphics. So if you get stuck, put away your pride and find some hints: The payoff at the end will be well worth it.

The reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because I am comparing it to other games that I have played recently. The only other Adventure game that I have really played is Myst. Riven has kept me more enthralled than games from any other genre. As I play more Adventure games, I may change my rating. I am playing "Myst 3: Exile" and then "The Longest Jouney" next. Now I'm off to Myst III: Exile. Happy clicking.

This game is incredible. It makes Uru look like Myst and makes Exile look like Uru! I mean, there are well over 3,000 3d renderd images and they were all esembled using 1994 Macs and Hypercard! You have no idea how primative hypercard is compared to what they do today!! And those graphics are amazing!! Its as if they either had 15 million polygons or was a camera that you control! Those computer generated people look photorealistic! No, not photorealistic, but prespectively realistic as well. I could not only see them, but these graphics are so amazing that it almost feels like you can reach out and touch everything that flashes on the screen. You can't beat that!! It just comes to show you that myst games cannot be beat! Also the computer generated people look so good, that I'll almost bet that they are actors behind blue screens! That is what they did in Myst. I mean this game is just outstanding! Not only have I run out of creative ideas to tell you how awesome Riven is, but I can still say that it was full of awe!! It is an incredible experience except for one glitch. At the very end when you are suposed to use this riven telescope to break this glass and open the star fissure, nothing happens! Well, This is still a great game.

Well, it's better than Myst

I enjoy playing the Myst games once through, they are fun and challenging. However my computer would not allow me to hit a certain switch for some reason, and I was therefore never able to get to the location on the cover. Even if I had, I would never play the game again, I would know how to do everything, and therefore, what would be the point? At least it is better then Myst in which you can win within about 15 minutes of starting the game, but still... Any 60 dollar game (as it was when it was released) should last longer than this. With the detail put in, the game itself is rather short, with puzzle solving accounting for much of your time. Also some puzzles can be so frustrating when you know what to do, but can't (the stopping the scopes thing, the puzzle at the top of the dome on the first island). I thought it was a beautiful game, but I wouldn't get it unless it is below 20 dollars, otherwise I don't really think it's worth it.

Beautiful game, with excellent (and hard!) puzzles

Once again you put your hand to the book, and enter another world...this time, Riven, in an effort to find the wife of your host. Yes, it's still basically a slide show, and yes, there really aren't any other people to interact with, but it's still beautifully drawn, with gorgeous environments to explore, and atmospheric music to soothe you.

Intriging with great graphics, as good as Myst.

The graphics were beautiful. I thought that it was sort of hard to figure puzzles out, I had to get some Internet help, but it wasn't any harder than Myst. The graphics are certainly better than in Myst! I recommend this to those who like to just wander around, take their time and look at the beauty of the world that is created.

WOW!

Myst and Riven are the best games I've ever played! I want the creators of the games to know that their years of work and frustration are very much appreciated.

From the moment I started playing Myst to the moment I finished Riven I was lost in those worlds. The way the games fit together perfectly really impressed me. Playing Riven was all I thought about while I played it. Sometimes I'd wake up late at night because I had a dream about what the solution to a puzzel in Riven might be. The beautiful surroundings will amaze and stun you. They deserve to be observed and appreciated. The many hours spent trying to decipher the many puzzels are well worth it when you get to the end of the game. It will make you almost giddy. The puzzels don't even seem like puzzels! They fit in perfectly with the surroundings.

Hey, I've got great news for die-hard fans of Myst and Riven! I have heard "rumors" about a sequal to Riven! It is called Myst III: Exile. Keep your eyes open!

When you play Riven you truly "link to others worlds." Get ready for the time of your life!

Never Want to leave !

I just purchase this game a few weeks ago. It was the first that I played anything related to Myst. This is is user friendly, unlike other games where you have to fumble over the keyboard controls.

Beautiful landscapes and exciting roller coaster like transports from one island to another makes this game enjoyable and exciting.

Clever puzzles are disguised as Riven's natural habitat.

This is a slow pace game not for those who like face-paced game. As always, this game is fustrating and after a while, you might get tired with it...

But the absorbing story line and the landscapes should will make you forget all that, and you might never want to leave Riven, even after you completed Riven many times...

An Immersive Experience - A Work of Art

If I could rate higher than a ten I would. This is truly what I believe computer gaming should be like, the integration of beautiful (hand drawn) artwork that immerses you completely into a self-paced surreal world, the world of Riven

These graphics! The good people at Cyan are not just game designers, they are accomplished artists. The box says that 100mhz with 4x cd-rom is required, but the artwork involved in every scene is very intricate (read: realistic) so have patience at those speeds. I played this at work (instead of lunch) on a 100mhz/8x cd, and I was waiting for some time for each scene to appear. Certainly not to say that it isn't still worth it (it is), but at home on my 200 machine the flow was instantaneous.

Lots of games for computers involve killing. I don't like them for personal reasons. Other games involve thinking, and these are the ones that I play. This is the best game I have ever interacted with, a true masterpiece.
