Major time sink...

I purchased the original Age of Empires years ago when it first came out, and the Roman expansion when it became available, so I have the equivalent of the so-called "Gold Edition".

Out of all the games I own, this is the most addictive. Time just flies by when I'm playing this game, which isn't always a good thing. This IS a good thing when my flight has been delayed however. With my laptop, extra lithium-ion batteries, and Age of Empires, airport delays are not nearly as painful as they used to be.

To create a game that remains addictive and interesting over the years is quite an achievement. Most video games become boring after a while, either because they are too frustrating and difficult, or they are too easy or repetitive. Finding a balance that is both entertaining and challenging is tough, and these guys have done it. I personally love the random games. The environment really dictates the strategy you should use, as it does in real life, and the possibilities are nearly endless. You can also design your own scenarios, which kills a lot of time and allows you to experiment with environmental conditions that the random map generator would never come up with.

The Roman expansion didn't add much, but it also didn't cost much. The most important feature I was looking for was the ability to put gates in my walls. In Age of Empires, if you build a wall around your civilization, you can not get out without destroying part of the wall. As I understand it, this has been corrected in Age of Kings, which I have not gotten yet.

If you enjoy real time strategy, you're gonna love Age of Empires!

I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I picked this game up. At first I was struck as to how much it resembles WARCRAFT (ORCS VS. HUMANS). Most of the level advancing, character animation and general game play is almost identical. At then end of the day, the purpose is to beat your enemy by advancing through civilizations and either conquering them, retrieving artifacts or constructing a wonder. The game is addictive, especially at the higher levels. If you can, try the multiplayer versions. There's nothing quite like playing against someone else. There are a few annoying little things. You can lose your people behind buildings and, in some cases, they get lost if sent on a roundabout route to their destinations. However, still a fun game and highly recommended.

fun or wat

This action packed game is fun for both adult and child. Brining back the mideval times is a great idea for a video game. I have bought age of empires 2 and expansion and that was great as well. In my opinion this game is more challenging than the second. This game is full of action, warfare, and fun. For you reader reading this I give this game 5 stars. For the parents as well as the children, this game is a keeper

Every 'Age of Empires' edition has been great, and now with II and III's enhanced gameplay, graphics and campaigns, it is easy for people to forget the landmark game that started it all - Age of Empires I.

Sure certain qualities of this game are not up to speed nowadays, but that does not mean they are bad, and that this game is still not utterly enjoyable. There are plenty of historical campaigns to try and complete, you can play randoms maps, death matches(pretty much the same as random map,)and you can create and play scenarios and campaigns(my favourite part of the game).

There are plenty of 'hero' characters as they are called, these are just people that lived back then(Hector, Jason, Hannibal etc.) And to accompany these you can create different types of soldiers that can be advanced as you advance through time.

All in all, this game is great to play, educational and voted game of the year

THIS GAME RULES!

This game wipes out all other strategy games. The best thing about Gold edition is that you can choose from main game, scenario, random map, death match, also if you want you can build your own scenario with scenerio builder. Another thing about this game is you get the original game and the expanion which you can play either. I WOULD RECCOMEND YOU BUY THIS GAME IF YOU LOVE STRATEGY GAMES, OR IF YOUR JUST LOOKING FOR A GOOD GAME.

Addictive, nice graphics, but mostly impossible to "win" at

The first 6 times I played this game was enjoyable...even though I never was "victorious" even at the "easiest" difficulty level. But, being a patient, tenacious, and fairly intelligent person I just KNEW that I'd be victorious sooner or later, so I kept playing. After a dozen more times I was only able to "win" once. If you buy this game, I'd recommend playing it online with other humans. Because trying to win in the single-player mode is practically impossible.

AOE is the best!!!!

Okay, so when you get age of empires, it takes a second to figure out what all you should do. But when you do figure it out it is an awsome game. You make your villagers forage, mine, chop down trees, hunt, and farm until you have enough supplies to make your tribe into a flourishing empire.

i love this game!

for all of you that love ancient history, this is the best game you'll ever play. you get to pick your civilization and duke it out with other civilizations. sometimes you win sometimes they win, but for the most part this game will keep you entertained and intrigued for hours. no situation is the same. it's totally worth it.
