A sad direction for a once wonderful game

I have been playing SWG for over 2 years and have been completely addicted to it. However, the changes made to the game in November have ruined the gameplay almost completely, and the developers are showing a complete disdain for any customer feedback.

This used to be a great game. Now it trys to be Doom meets WoW in a Star Wars universe and fails miserably at everything.

Until the developers begin to listen to their customers instead of ignorant marketing fools, SWG will just keep getting worse.

SWG has become one of the worse MMO's on the market

This game has gone down hill since the first Combat upgrade 6 months ago. Now with the NGE, they have reduced this game to 9 classes. Jedi used to be a hard profession to obtain, but a very viable combat profession. Now it is an out of the box profession that has no purpose in combat. Jedi deal the least amount of damage, yet have 0 defense and can only kill creatures or NPC's that are below thier combat level. The Devs are constantly making changes to the game, such as changing the chat system so you have to hit enter each time you want to chat. There has always been an option for modal or Modeless chat, but due to marketing this game to 9 year olds, it seems that they had to dumb down the UI. After playing this for over 2 years I am very disappointed in the changes. I would not recommend this game to anyone, nor will I purchase anymore SOE or Lucas Arts products.

Good to great, more like great to horrible

I have been with this game for over 2 years, it was awesome then an upgrade came out know as CU or combat upgrade. This was an attempt to balance the player characters. What it did was force players to HAVE to group with other players. It was bearable but took the solo adventuring more or less out of the game. The latest version known as NGE or new game experience totally wrecked the system by making all profession equal with no unique characteristics. Unpopular combat system. No more unique combat moves and a level of in game bugs that is unacceptable. The graphics are rivaled by few other games but in the end it is not a very good RPG game and the uniqueness that brought in so many players is now the reason for them leaving in record numbers. Few of the many are staying which makes this an MMO failure. You may try it out for your own curiosity, but if you were a player from the start or even an after CU player, you will agree with the numerous negative write ups, and that this game is not worth the money anymore. You might as well buy an old Atari system and play pong. That's how exciting it has become.

SWG has become a joke ! Don't trust SOE

SOE is the worst Company in the Game industry. Don't buy it! Prefer a KOTOR game, it's really better.

years wasted on nothing really

Played SWG since it's very release, first 8 months were fantastic, PvP and player socializing were simply the best in comparison to other online RPGs.
Although SOE even back then did display some malicious disturbing tendencies like compulsive self mutilation and shooting themselves in the foot continuously for the last 2 years. Which resulted in a massive exodus of SW fans, 99% of whom actually did their best trying to love this potentially great game. Being patient and pleading with SOE talentless hacks for over two years was nothing but a waste of time.
Best if one starts developing own real life character, instead of wasting valuable limitedly allocated real life hours on this nonsense game.

So long, and thanks for all the fish...

I started playing Star Wars Galaxies in October 2003 (http://lirial.20m.com/cancelled.html for those who doubt how long I have played) .... and apparently it was 2 years of time wasted on making the character I wanted because Sony Online Entertainment/Lucasarts has felt the urge to change it so that you are no longer "Living the star wars saga, YOUR saga" as you want it, you now can "live the experience" the way they TELL you you HAVE to live it... No more customizing your character to a profession that suits you...

When the game first came out, there were 32+ professions you could choose to work on. (IE: Rifleman, Scout, Bounty Hunter, Creature Handler, Bio Engineer, Droid Engineer, Medic, Doctor, Combat Medic, Chef, Dancer, Musician, Image Designer, Swordsman, Fencer, Pikeman, Teras Kasi Artist, Pistoleer, Brawler, Architect, Politician, and others) If you decided you didnt like a profession, you could drop it and work on another, intermixing the professions as you felt the need.

You want to be a dancer who can earn a little on the side hunting in slow times in the cantina? (Maybe go Dancer/Rifleman, or maybe Dancer/Teras Kasi Artist with a dash of medic) Nope sorry you want to dance, (Entertainer) thats ALL you can do.

You wanted to catch and train the taun tauns they rode on Hoth? Be the like the guy who took care of Jabbas rancor in Return of the Jedi? You wanted to be the one who went out and got an egg to grow a veractyl like Obi Wan rode in revenge of the sith? Maybe catch and train the dewbacks that the stormtroopers were riding on as they searched for R2-D2 and C3PO on Tatooine in A New Hope? Guess the gungan animals they used in were BORN with all the gear strapped onto them and carry it because its attached to them...But if thats what you wanted, well, to bad because Sony/LA feel that the Creature Handler profession was "Not Star Warsy" enough and removed it... along with 20 or so of the other professions the game started with...

Now you can pick a picture of one of the 9 movie characters pictures in the character select screen and say "Thats me, Im gonna be Han Solo" (Smuggler), or "Oh look! Im gonna be Boba Fette!" (Bounty Hunter) Since the interchangeable 32+ professions were turned into 9 preset "Iconic" profession with the aforementioned movie personas on the select screen. (Once you choose that profession if you dont like it you have to DELETE your character and make a NEW one)

You like roleplaying and chatting with your friends while hunting? Nope sorry, due to the pathetic attempt at making SWG a FPS you can no longer type in chat and hunt at the same time unless you magically aquire an extra set of hands... god forbid you are disabled in any way, apparently disabled arent part of their profit margin so they arent worht making able to play... Even though they were able to play just fine in the pre-NGE gamestyle.

As for the "faster game play" another person summed it up best... it now looks like Benny Hill on crack.. freakishly sped up not improved....

Dont you love having to keep line of site and your cursor over mobs to hit them, yet they can run all over and behind building hils whatever and still hit you, while your now like the typical moveie stormtrooper who cant hit the side of a barn...

Customer service? Unless your someone singing their praises, you are utterly ignored by SOE/LA, unless they are deleting/locking anything negative you might post about their game...

Due to this mess, and messes experienced in other games by SOE It has pushed me to the point where I will never again purchase anything made or even affiliated with Sony or Lucasarts, and try to let anyone I see going towards them know just exactly what their practices are...

Best analogy I can come up with for they way they treat their paying customers is as follows... Sony Online Entertainment/LucasArts = Hurricane Katrina, and Star Wars Galaxies subscribers = New Orleans. Be prepared at any time to have the game you purchased in good faith on how it was advertised to be completely changed with little to no notice.

Myself I played a Master Creature Handler/Master Swords with a dash of medic to be able to keep myself and my pets healed. In october of 2005 they started advertising an expansion to the game called "Trials of Obi-Wan" with many allusions to enhancements to my Creature Handler profession (more animals to catch, and a "Master Creature Handlers Necklace" which would enable us to go from controlling up to level 70 creatures to level 80 creatures. The expansion was ONLY available as a digital download (online purchase via Credit Card, dowloaded as a game patch) They VERY day my payment was processed, SOE/LA announced that they were releasing "New Game Enhancements" in two weeks, and my profession was being REMOVED from the game entirely along with may others.

If you do decide to go into this game, NEVER ever ever ever prepay for more then one month in advance. Many people paid up to a year in advance to have the game they wanted to play completely changed, and were refused refunds.

Never again will I purchase any product owned or affiliated in any way with Sony & Lucasarts, Straw.Camel.Back. So long, and thanks for all the fish!

The fall of a game

Not sure where to begin.. this game in its original version was truely Starwars, and THE singlemost advanced MMO on the scene.. however it was launched to fast.. and full of bugs.. SOE then left the game much to itself for along time while they dabbled with their new games.. Patch after patch made the game better.. but shortly before the launch of the movie.. band SOE changes the entire game is what was called the Combat Upgrade.. many players left over this as it made the game simpler..

Then recently SOE without any prior warning or proper testing they launch the New Game Enhancements.. rippings away the last of the adavanced feeling of the game.. it is now horrible.. any weapon igame does the same damage.. you can start as a Jedi.. Jedi can use rifles.. (most do..) and they have idiotic titles such as "elder bountyhunter"..

SOE claimed to make the game more Starwarsy.. well I can tell you this.. all they did was drag the Starwars name through the mud.. and they are so arrogant that they have turned a cold shoulder to THOUSANDS of veterans that opposed the changes to the game..

Starwars Startkit is a waste of money, you will find dead servers and a collapsed gaming world. SOE has ruined a once good game...

Also know this should you consider playing the game.. SOE will change your gameplay during your time.. they have done so countless times with no regard to the player base.. even when the community has protested.

Ive read a few positive posts on this product.. although Im sure these are SOE employees sent here to try and hide the truth it matters very little.. you will see what a horribly bad game this is should you choose to waste money on it.

SOE thought that by copying what BLizzard had done (interface and such) that SWG could steal customers from them.. SOE was very wrong here.. Hundreds of thousand players left them in their sinking ship.. SWG is dead.. my best tip to you would be not to waste a single dime on it. My bet is that the game closes sometime February.. or atleast during 2006.

Not worth $15 a month. Go Buy Star Wars Battlefront 2

This game is now Star Wars Battlefront 2, another game that does not charge you $15 a month to play.

I found this game pathetic and the Customer support was horrible. Let me explain:

I came across a HUGE bug that kept me from finishing a quest and so I sent a bug report. next day it was not fixed, so I put in another report. This was not working so I decided to send in an "open ticket" Well, the "open ticket" which goes right to the Devs simply told me to fill out a BUG REPORT? :/ I did that again and nothing was fixed so I sent in another open ticket and I was told that the bug reports work fine and to do that (again). I GAVE UP.

Also, as you will notice many people are upset with the Developers of this game and I do not blame them. Let me explain:

This game started as a unique and beautiful game and then we were told there would be minor fixes. Well they changed the whole game and 80% of their player base told them they hated it. Then, out of nowhere they CHANGED IT again to what it is now, a cheap yet more expensive version of Star Wars Battlefront 2? This time they did not tell their player base they just did it. Why? I will tell you why.

The company, SOE lied to its fan base twice now and had to refund many players $$$ on the current expansion. They have lied about various things that I wont get into but because of the many deplorable and negative actions of SOE, I choose not to play ANY (not just this game) SOE games.

Yes it was and is that bad.

And beware of 5 STAR posts, it has now gotten out the SOE workers are doing their best to combat the TRUTHFUL reviews of this game.

lets rap this up,

So:

Pros:
Graphic wise, it is a nice game
You can now be a Jedi

Cons:
Horrible support
to many problems in gameplay (aka bugs)
lag
you can play Jedi, but the Jedi is VERY weak in the game
Horrible Company
Not a balance in the Experience system
To reliant upon "Quests" than missions
$15 to play a game that is a copy of another game
the PROS are not worth getting this game

Fool me once shame on me, fool me twice shame on you.........

this is for all the 5 star folks who seem to believe that the only reason people are upset is that they are Vets, and don't like the changes. Lets look at it this way shall we??

Jun03: SWG launches. Launch day was not so good, but most were able to get in the following day. Not to bad MMORPGs tend to have rocky launches.

Game runs well, many bugs left over from beta are glaring and some to this day still have not been fixed.. (2+years and still bugs left from original Beta)

Gameplay however is new. No other MMORPG on the market has a system inplace like SWG. It is revolutionary in the way everything interacts with each other. There are a few class imbalances but nothing shocking. The path to Jedi is still unknown. One camp believes that the path is through Professions which was laughed about by alot of people. The people who laughed seemed to think that traveling around being nice ot others would get you a Jedi slot. Come to find out it was profession, and that Holocrons would start you on the path to become a Jedi.

The Hologrind.
Many players at this time had completely leveled several character professions, and were looking for something to do. SOE constantly stated that yo ucould travel around and look at the planets. The players cried for content and the Developers delivered Holocrons. Holocrons told yo ua few of the professions yo uneeded to master to become a Jedi.
Players due to lack of content went insane trying to find holocrons so they could begin mindlessly grinding professions to reach teh magical realm of a Jedi. Jedi was the only end game type content in the game. Once you killed a few thousand critters and did a few broken quests the game had nothing left content wise.

Most players, and guilds took to making their own content. Servers held event made by the players using any game mechanic they could to attempt to draw out some form of content. The devs got excited due to the fact that lots was happenening in the game. Unfortunatly the devs were only responsible for the blank bugged worlds the players made the fun.

PLayer citys, and mounts were finally introduced into the game. The cities game some content however they led mainly to more player made content than dev created content.

Holocrons were given out as christmas presents by the devs so that everyone could enjoy the content called the Hologrind. this went on for many, many months.

One thing the devs had originally put inplace for content reasons were battlefields. These were places where groups of players could go to have imperial vs rebel battles. unfortunatly they were broken from launch and eventually taken out of the game.

the devs finally decided that they needed to change the path to jedi and add some content. they added the force village so anyone could become glowy and eventually reach jedi. They promised a quest based system to become Jedi and the players ate it up as promise of new content made everyone happy. Come to find out you would do one quest then go out again and do what yo uhad been doing for the last 14 months and kill pickets, voritors and any othe XP generating mob in order to exchange it for Forcesensitive XP. The conversion rate was very low so there was much grinding. Basically the Developers put in a handfull of quests called it good and went about their business.

The Glactic civil war:
Thats what starwars is all about isnt it? the struggle of good and evil... the struggle of the rebellion against the mighty empire..
Well the GCW was broken since launch and the developers tried seeral things to fix it i.e. removing battlefields. They added new base types, and changed the way faction points were gained to an extent somehow without ever really fixing anything.

Jump to light speed was released and things started to look up. the developers started fixing beta bugs, and adding some content (loot) to the game. there were still no new quests added to the ground game....Things were looking up however things were being fixed and it seemed the devs were finally listening to the playre base.

The combat revamp had been talked about for some time. and finally it was announced that it would take place.
Of course this scrapped most of what had been fixed in the previous months and took the game back to infancy. Eventually the bugs got worked out to an extent and the game was again playable. however nothing new was added.

Rage of the wookies premiered and a new Pay expansion was released with new quests. basically SOEs philosophy is if there is going to be new content then people ar egoing to pay extra for it.

Trials of Obiwan was announced and people again were happy even though it meant paying again for another expansion when there were still many, many things missing from the original game.

2 days later the NGE was announced and less than a month later it went live.

SOEs history is not a good one.
the fail to fix glaring bugs.
They add new content only when it is an expansion.
They tell the players one thing then turn around 180 and do another.
Their history is one of doing exactly opposite of what the playerbase wants and this is why yo uhave so many cancellations.
People have finally had enough of the lies that SOE has thrust upon a community that supported it throught thick and thin.

If they would have spent as much time fixing bugs, and adding content as they did rewriting the base game code then I would give this 5 stars and reccomend everyone come and play SWG.

Unfortunatly I cannot. Do not waist your money on this title. SOE has not and will never support its player base. Their only goal is to squeeze a little more money out of new people so they can continue to ge a paycheck.

SOE did the impossible they killed Starwars.

A once-great game, ruined

This game was, perhaps, the most fun game I had ever played... until November 15th. Star Wars Galaxies used be a game full of depth and maturity. As a post-college gamer, I never found myself bored, given the fantastic level of complexity in the game. Heck, it took me a good week to learn just the basics and, 2 years later, I was still learning new professions. Now, I know some people would say this is a negative, but let me explain the one reason I feel it isn't: I had to pay $15 each month to continue playing. For that price, it had better be a game where there's always something new (and I don't mean "a new bad guy to kill"). I REALLY felt like I was playing in the Star Wars Universe. Then November 15th came along...

Sony Online Entertainment, listening to "overwhelming customer feedback", gutted the game, removing easily 50-70% of the complexity and dumbing the game down to just another point-and-shooter. Jedi are no longer Jedi. Remember Obi-Wan or Anakin taking on scores of baddies? Nope. In the current version, you'd do just as well as Han Solo would (i.e. you're normal). The complexity and maturity is gone, replaced by an interface that requires both hands to be *off the "QWERTY"*. Why is this important? Because one of the central elments of SWG is (well, "was") *community*. If you can't type to friends while you're fighting, what are you going to do? Stop fighting? So how will you level? Fight. Oh wait, gotta stop chatting. So basically, you're paying $15/mo for either "Republic Commando" (only with sub-par graphics and less-then-inspiring gameplay) or "MSN messenger" since you can no longer effectively combine community with fighting.

This was once a wonderful game, full of a vibrant community and fantastic depth. Granted, content was lacking, but this hasn't changed and now the vibrant community is gone (I counted 400 cancellations on my server alone in the first week) and the game has devolved to a point-and-click fighting interface. it's horrendous!

Bottom line: If they decide not to charge a monthly fee, go for it, because thenyou'll be getting what you paid for it. otherwise, go for one of the other MMORPGs out there. You'll hav more fun.

Star Wars Galaxies used to be an MMORPG (Massively multiplyaer online role-playing game). Now it's just a MOG: Multiplayer online game. If you want that, Get Battlefront I or II... There's a reason almost every review = 1 star...

PS I might also add that Sony Online Entertainment does not appear to listen closely to player feedback. This ewn interface was rolled out in a "this is what we're doing" type of way with no opportunity for the community at large to ofer support. The game has had bugs tat existed at launch (2+ years ago) that have yet to be addressed. A game-breaking chat bug was intriduced 4 months ago and was fixed !!!6 weeks ago!!! The game is characterized by incompetent development and management. The Star Wars Universe may be enticing, but trust, this is no longer the Star Wars Universe... :(
