BUG RIDDEN MESS

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 18 / 20
Date: November 25, 2005
Author: Amazon User

Star Wars Galaxies was always a bug ridden mess. Since its launch in 2003, every new patch that attempted to fix one thing ended up breaking 5 other things.

So why did the game last so long? Two reasons: depth and community.

The depth came from the beautiful profession system, which gave you over 30 to choose from and you were never locked into any one class. Players got 250 skill points to spend in any way they wished...any combination of classes/professions could be made as long as you didn't go over 250 points. Depth also came from the amazingly complex and rewarding crafting system. Player crafted items were better than any loot in the game...but in order to craft good items you had to collect good resources. This ensured that the player base would be dependent on one another and promoted the community and economy as a whole.

Community: A game of such depth required that you had friends in the game with whom you worked towards long term goals of power and fun. Fighting professions, besides engaging in PVP, were great for helping to acquire good crafting resources on dangerous planets. There were also entertainer professions that actually helped the player base by healing and buffing, and this made cantinas fun places to hang out, take a break, and chat with fellow players.

These are the aspects of SWG that made players like myself stay with the game despite the bugs. However, now that the depth and community of Star Wars Galaxies has been officialy destoyed by the NGE (New Game Enhancements, which is doublespeak for "plan B"), there is nothing left for us to enjoy. That is why the majority of the players have quit...and most of us have gone to better games (World of Warcraft myself). Don't be fooled, if you want a fast paced Star Wars shooter, at least get Battlefront. Star Wars Galaxies, as it is now, is simply not fun or rewarding on any level.

Also, this revamped SWG is not ready for live. But check this out: the revamp was announced to the player community on November 1, went to test center on November 4 (!), and pushed live on November 15 (!!!!). This is why the players of the original SWG are so angry and disappointed. As a veteran player, I urge you to be wary of SOE and any MMORPG with the SOE logo on it. They pulled the rug out from under us once, and there's no reason why they wouldn't do it again. Don't invest your time and money into a game that may not exist tomorrow, depending on the whim (and desperate business situations) of its developers.

STAY AWAY. Don't just take my word for it. Read the other reviews here and on other sites. You'll see one or two positive reviews but when you look at the pattern it's easy to see that those positive reviews are planted by SOE employees. No one in their right mind could enjoy this game.

Stay Away From This Game

I played this game for over a year. In that time they had TWO major changes to the game. In both changes all your armor weapons and other equipment changed stats and things that were very valuable became worthless. It is very disheartening to spend 100's of hours building up yuor character only to have all that effort trashed. Now they have changed the combat to a First Person Shooter style and with all the lag on the servers it has become unplayable. All the patches they release are full of bugs and their Customer Support is terrible. I could go on forever but in short save your money and buy something else. PacMan would be more enjoyable than this garbage.

Stay as far away from this game as you can

game is not anywhere close to being half way done
all of the "Quests" are bugged and mostly uncompleatable
combat is simular to a bad earily 90's FPS game
Sony has the worst possible customer service the one thing
you can count on is they will lie and attempt to decieve
you in order to get your money players are leaving the game in droves at this point the game could hardley be called a MMO
if you wish to see first hand the players dissatifaction with this "Game" look to the SWG forums boards and read the game play discussion

A once great game, but times have changed. Server populations are extremly low, customer service is horrible, game UI is very nintendo like, new version of game is also bug filled and designed for 9 year olds. I could go on for days but Im sure my fellow players here will tell you the whole story.. good luck but be afraid to deal with sony online!!!!

Still a Beta beware you will need all the expansions to level up

I will not go into the horrible customer service of SOE, as that will be done by many others. But let me tell you this NGE update was loaded on live servers in Beta Test Stage at best. It is nowhere near finished, and the UI is horrible, the worst of any computer game I have ever played. If you are disabled you will not be able to play, and the disabled players are asking for answers on the forums, and getting ignored at best, banned at worst. The scaling down of 32 professions to 9 was also a horrible mistake. If you like to roleplay you are limited by the fact most professions are cookie cutter. No matter what the damage on your weapons right now, whether lvl 1 or lvl 80 they are all the same!!!!! This is a dumbed down version of what was once a great game. Now with the THIRD system live since April, you are Paying to "Beta test" an unfinished product. Many of the "130 new quests" are bugged or do not work. The lag is horrible, and many items are still "disabled" not allowing you to use them, such as some FLamethrowers and commando weapons. Please be warned once you pick a "class" you cannot change!!!! You must delete and "re-roll" your toon and start over at lvl 1 if you dont like your profession. My most sincere advice is to hold off on this product a while until the bugs get worked out, then come back and see if the customer reviews have improved. Please note I am not someone who is just out to flame, I tried to be specific about as much as possible that is wrong with this game. Save your money for now and keep track to see if the game breaking problems get fixed. BTW and I am soooo honest in this, Jedi is the weakest starting combat class, by far and away, don't believe me? Check the other posts here.

Don't let the TV advertisements or their numerous promises fool you. As a once proud owner of the Collector's Edition and "From Release" veteran of the game I can honestly say SWG is no more. SWG throughout the years has only listened to the call of profits and misguided advice. Never before has a community shown so much dedication and willingness to help then that of SWG and never before has a company shown such an utter disregard for their own customers.

The NGE was an attempt to completely change the game and right the wrongs that were apparent over the 2-year course and CU. However did they ask the community if this was indeed the correct change? No, the concept was released one day, which no one had any idea of. When NGE concept was released they did not ask us if this is what we wanted, but rather this is what we would get. After that they released it to the test servers for public testing for a total of 15 days. That's right, a publish that changes everything about the game is pushed to live in 15 days ignoring all of the testers warnings, pleads and requests to allow further testing.

SWG's strong point has never been the game its self. Weather it was the lack of unique exploring, in depth quests (which they were redeeming with Kashyyyk and Mustifar) or the constant grinding needed. What really was the key for SWG winning hearts was the community. Everyday something was new and exciting due to the loyal community and there you could feel you would make a difference. Now that community has all but faded with SOE's "Don't like it, leave it." attitude.

Not only has NGE ruined both the feeling of brother ship between members, but also economics of the game which some would argue was the heart and soul.
Some examples are: Removed all decay. (Never buy another item unless you want a simple upgrade in stats)
Quest rewards (many of the items granted upon finishing quests are better then crafters are able to make)
Profession rewards (You don't even have to do a quest for this, just reach a level and your granted full sets of weapons and armor which is on par with that of player crafted items.
Lowering of stats (The same item made with the same resources could drastically very depending on who made it for what purpose. Now weapons have only 2 stats and only one of those the crafter can effect, the damage.)
Jedi (Jedi are completely self reliant and craft their own weapons and armor)

It has been concluded that Crafters were lowered to nothing more then walking talking NPCs all selling the same items no one needs. Crafters were not the only ones to get the shaft Entertainers, Melee, old Jedi, Bio Engineers and Creature Handlers (which were completely removed) also were degraded.

Jedi: This was another problem of its own. SWG is set in a time area where Jedi are at their lowest point (arguably only 3 in the Galaxy) A system was placed to keep them rare and yet powerful where a player had to work hard and be dedicated to reach it. Now any and everyone can be a Jedi. Not only does this hurt the crafters, but also I can easily say 75% of the population is now this profession. Blasters are becoming the rare weapon of choice not the saber. Again another poor decision made by Sony to gain profit.

There is much more I could state, but this review would be to long. From my point of view SWG is no longer SWG, but a sad shadow of its former self. I bought my subscriptions in years and my friends often called me foolish how dedicated and loyal I was to a game that had so many rough points, this was too much however. Normally I would be defending SWG and rating it 5 stars out of 5, but here I am giving it a 1, which now I don't know if it even deserves that.

Avoid This Game At All Costs

I'll start with my summary before anything else: avoid this game at all costs! There's nothing more to it than that.

Now, the question is why? I've played Star Wars Galaxies since launch. It was a fun game. It was one of the best games I've played. There were relatively few bugs, there were quests, and there was an extensive profession system.

There was. Star Wars Galaxies no longer exists. They screwed over their customers after 2 years of gameplay. Expansions were just a means of getting more money before altering the game entirely. You can no longer switch professions, and there are only 9 professions. Jedis are now available to everyone, and they are terrible.

I could continue on, but it only goes downhill from there. Do not buy this game. They just want your money.

I WISH I COULD PUT ZERO STAR

This was once the best MMORPG I've ever played, fun, interesting, innovative in its skills system (you could switch professions over and over again, just like in real life, so you could never get bored), with a lot of Role-Playing to do if you wanted, a LOT of people playing it and being happy with it, and for whatever reason that is completely beyond me Sony Online decided to kill this game.
They released what they called "New Game Enhancement" in November 2005, and now Star Wars Galaxies has just turned into another shoot 'em up for 10 year-old kids, where everybody can now be a Jedi at first level (no more quests to fulfill), which is also completely stupid because Jedi are now the weakest of their new "class" system. Yes, you are now once and for all stuck in a specific class, and you can choose between the overwhelming number of... 9 classes ! So now you see Jedi everywhere, but Jedi carrying rifles because their lightsabers and Force powers are useless against even low-level NPC !!!! If George Lucas ever plays this game, he's gonna have a heart attack.
This is totally ridiculous, as is everything else in this new stupid childish game that has absolutely nothing to do with the Star Wars Galaxies we all played and loved.
If I wanted to play a Doom-like game, I would have bought one, if I wanted to play World Of Warcraft I would have bought it (I might do now), I bought Star Wars Galaxies because it was a MMORPG like no other, and that's why we tolerated its numerous bugs, but now that it's like all others, but not as good as the others, I'm gonna play a better one.
And so is everyone I know by the way, you can now actually walk in Mos Eisley and be alone in the whole town cos noone is playing this game anymore !!!
Don't waste your time and money on this piece of crap.

An entire player base thrown to the wind in attempt to milk the star wars cash cow

The game has always been pretty buggy. It felt like "STARSHIP TROOPERS ONLINE" with the amount of bugs they have in it. Many of them dated back to Beta. The dev team is not as effective as many other games, thus the bugs stay.

Sony Entertainment Online and Lucas Arts have taken what was once a great indepth game and dumbed it down to Minesweeper standard. All you do is click, that's it. Nothing to it. They took what was once time consuming and challenging and turned it into time consuming and boring.

Jedi was once something to be proud of. Now it's a joke given away to lure in newbies. Sony Entertainment Online and LucasArts are doing this as a last minute grab for the Star Wars cashcow hoping to get the last amount of money they can.

They lied to the player base when the rumors of this starter kit came out so that they could continue to rip us off with their expansion, The Trials of Obiwan. 1 day after its release, this was announced, and the entire content of the expansion was useless, and we all lost money on it.

This entire game is going to hit a brick wall now. Not even worth picking up. If you pick this game up you're just asking to get ripped off.

They are now taking every single accomplishment in game and giving it away at startup. Players who spent literally 2 years earning wealth, stats, and Jedi characters, are now getting blatantly ripped off and cast off to sea.

No where has a player base been treated like this. It is very unethical. They cast us all aside and went on with their great plan, lying and saying they got positive feedback on it. We're pretty much screwed.

This game is going to crash hard. They took 33 diverse professions and dumbed them into 9 cookie cutters. They took everyones hard earned items and made them worthless. They took away peoples entire social purposes and turned them into junk.

If you value your money and sanity, avoid this game like a plague.

No longer a good game

This was once a great game, one of the best, but Star Wars Galaxies have unfortunatly lost a lot the last 2 years. Where other games evolve and get new levels of complexity SWG has become simpler and simpler and lost much of its old charm. Changes upon changes have been made not by the wishes of the players and the community but by the Developers who no longer seem to understand the customerbase at all.

This game no longer has a vision.

This game no longer is fun.

This is NOT the game you are looking for.
