While I was also sceptical about the 4-6 hour idea, the game is just so well done that I can't fault Valve for going the epispodic route. Would I have preferred HL3? Sure, but there is something to be said for not having to wait 2-3 years for the next one. . . As mentioned, the graphics are amazing on this expansion, noticable in almost every detail and in the lighting, which is incredibly realistic. Gameplay is great, with some interesting twists, old standby's like Barney and new combine baddies to overcome. All in all a great game; can't wait for episode 2! Oh, I couldn't get the game to load off the disc from amzn, but it was relaitively easy to get from Steam. . .

This expansion rules/rocks. Ya know¿? something?¿ to many people whine, and complain, about how it's the same thing from HalfLife 2 ...sigh!! people get a life! its not a sequel!! its an expansion to HalfLife 2!!, and not a sequel to HalfLife 2...the game gets a 10 in my book. And this is comming from a gamer who knows the difference from a sequel and an expansion pack. Good Day!

Cannot provide a review as the game crashes during start up. And they have no fixes todate.

This game should be a top seller but...

This game has so much potential and seems like it would be very good in a wide variety of ways. However, it uses the 'Steam' authentication engine and steam does not work. I have installed and reinstalled this game about 5 times and the thing has wasted so much of my time I can not begin to tell you how frustrated I am. My other games work fine, even those with internet verfication. Do not buy this game or any game that relies on the steam network! Hopefully the game producers will get the message that the game consumers will not put up with this!

Still a great game!

Sad to see some many people reviewing the Steam system instead of the game. As far as the game goes, its more of teh same but still fun and this one has more puzzles to figure out. Total game time about 3-4 hours.

Also I have never had an issue with Steam.

Halflife 2 Episode One is Fantastic- Stop Complaining About Steam

Everything about this game is great- the graphics, the gameplay. I have never had any problem with Steam, and the people who do need to understand if it wasn't for Steam the wonderful world of hackers would keep us from getting any more in the Halflife universe (it is because of the pirates that Steam was created in the first place). And anybody complaining about the length of the game needs to understand this is actually on the lines of an expansion pack- an incredibly sophisticated one, but and expansion pack nevertheless. So stop complaining about Steam and start enjoying the content.

Good, but I long for what could have been.

Episode one is a good game. I like the concept of episodic release. This helps the company with a named brand to reduce risks and give their fan base more frequent installments of releases to help retain their interests.

However, judging on the game's own merits, then there really isn't anything new---Alyx's facial expression has been boasted, and I think Barnie's too, but this enhancement is not universal. If you look at other player models you know what I mean.

Also, please introduce one 'original' enemy or weapon system instead of some rehashed hybrid like the combine zombie. I did not notice any improvements of their AI system other than Alyx. In comparison, F.E.A.R's squad AI is more interesting and challenging then Episode One's.

I'm also diappointed that they did not give Alyx's robotic dog a bigger role in this episide. They could have come up with many tricky situations where Freeman need to manipuate it to get him over some hazzardous situation.

It's odd that in the original Half-life, Valve introduced so many memorial creatures and levels, but the sequels does not quite live up to the original.

I'm sure inside Valve, they must have tons of creative ideas, but somehow they were left on the cutting floor in favor of releasing the product on a 6 month cycle. If that's truly the case, then this will be the beginning of the downward spiral of HalfLife franchise.

A short, but welcome addition to Half Life series.

I actually enjoyed this game more than the original full version Half Life 2.

Pros:

1.) Lots of action with Gordon and Alyx trying to get out of City 17.

2.) Great graphic and sound if you have the system to run them properly.

3.) The last 1/2 of the game is an example of FPS gaming at its best. Wonderful! Lets hope for more of this in episode two.

4.) Comes on a DVD, so the install is fairly quick.

Cons:

1.) Because it comes on a DVD, you'll need a DVD player on your computer.

2.) Then after the DVD install, you are automatically sent to "Steam" where you must download the entire game again from the internet. I'm fortunate enough to have a fast internet connection, but if you have to use dial up, forget it; it would take forever and probably turn you off so much you'd never enjoy the game. (Thus a loss of one star on the "overall game" rating)

3.) You need a good CPU and video card to enjoy the game or else you may have turn down some of the video options to get the game to run without clipping.

All in all, despite my concerns, this game is a winner, and worth the reasonable purchase price. I can hardly wait for the next installment.

The game has to be loaded on line. It did not state that internet service was necessary. I opened the box before I noticed the system requirements so I could not return it. I could not get the game to load at all.
I took this game to a friend that has dsl and a computer powerful enough to run it. After all the loading and signing up for the steam software to "really" run your game, it still didn't work properly.
All I wanted was a game I could load on my computer and enjoy. I don't need or want all the online junk that everybody is pushing. If I had known this was online only I would have never wasted my time or money.
