This game has great graphic, good story, and some weird but cool music. The levels look to alike so it's easy to get lost, but they are detailed. Voice acting is just awful. Awsome spcial effect and atmosphere. Game is somewhat short and repetative. I like the combat system a lot. It is a good game.

I am thoroughly impressed with Castlevania's crossover to 3D. I've been a fan of the series since the beginning and I was a bit worried it would get the Devil May Cry treatment and it would be over. Luckily, it retains the simple and straightforward gameplay, cool music, great graphics and nifty bosses we've come to love from the series. It's not SOTN, but it's a great start into a new direction. The graphics are flawless with no slowdowns, and the music really is nice. Anyway, it's really good!!! Get it!!!

Overall Very Enjoyable

People, for the love of video-games, I cannot BELIEVE some of the critical reviews in here!

Oh, the whip-jumps are too hard!

Oh, the combo-system is too difficult!

Oh, the controls take 5 whole minutes to learn!

Oh, I get into a battle and forget which door to go through!

Give me a BREAK. This sounds like a bunch of people who are stuck in the 2D world of previous great Castlevania games and who are somewhat unwilling to enjoy where the franchise is going.

This is a great game overall, and is quite enjoyable... if you let it be! Let's break this down a little:

Graphics: I don't believe anyone complained about this and they certainly wouldn't have had a right to if they did! Great graphics.

Gameplay: The gameplay is awesome. Very crisp and responsive. SOMETIMES the camera angle of a given room may make a jump or two a little awkward, but these instances are few and far apart. Things like whip-jumps are very easy with about 2 minutes of practice and add a little diversity to levels. Are whip-jumps unrealistic? Well, considering Leon's in a castle filled with vampires and other undead monsters........

Combat System: Combos are a GOOD THING. Who wants 12+ hours of gameplay with just one basic whip-attack? Not me. The combos look great and are very useful against the stronger baddies. I for one would not want to tackle a room full of phantoms or dullahans without some advanced combos. I won't even get into the bosses!

Sound Track: The music is good. Not superb, but good enough in my opinion. I was hoping for slightly better, but I won't complain too much. The SFX are amazing, however.

The only two problems I had with the game were the lenght and story. The game was a little short for my liking and the ending was a little lame. I know it was just supposed to set us up for the rest of the Castlevania but I was left wanting more when I finished the game.

Anyway, to sum it all up: Great game. If you're willing to enjoy the evolution of a franchise series then get this title. It will not displease you.

Some pointers:

- use the map often. You won't get muddled up with which door to take once you get used to it.

- practice your combos. You'll be much more effective in combat.

- explore. You'll find alot of good power-ups with a little exploring. Get map completion on each level.

- keep an open mind!!!

Better than the first!!!

When i got the game i wasnt really sure what i was in for. I played the first Castlevania: SOTN on PS1 and truly loved it as it brought back really good memories for me. Then so many years later, this game came out and i went..WOW!. The Graphics are sweet and fighting is good, but, can be a pain. The camera angles kinda stinks and it could be a bit better, but, other than that i can truly see that this game will be on the top ten list of games for X-Mas this year. Well worth your time and money.

One of the best Castlevanias yet

"Lament of Innocence" is one of those games you have to get into. When I first started playing it, I was disappointed; the weapon/magic systems just aren't as deep and complex as Symphony of the Night, or even Aria of Sorrow. Once I accepted that the game WASN'T going to be another Symphony, though, I learned to love it on its own merits.

This game isn't so much about exploration as it is combat. That being said, let me explain:

Combat is easy to pick up and combos easy to string together. If there's one thing I hate about fighting/melee games, it's the complex combo systems, but Lament of Innocence keeps it simple and to the point. The sub-weapon system works equally well, but my only complaint is that the pink orb/Cross combo is too effective. I found myself relying on it way too much and scarcely looked at the other orb/weapon combinations.

Leon Belmont is easy to manuever about, and he also has some nifty dodge attacks. My only complaint about movement/weapon selection is the real-time menu; it's stupid that you can't select your weapons on the pause menu. This means that you'll be struggling to heal yourself in the middle of combat if you don't have the menus set up exactly as you want them. A pain, to be sure. The fixed camera rarely gets in the way, but you'll occassionally find yourself striking blindly at enemies that you've driven into the corner.

The graphics and the atmosphere are perfect for the game; several times, I just stopped to look around, especially in the House of Sacred Remains and Ghostly Theater. Level design gets repetitive, but remember, the game is all about combat. The enemy design is also somewhat repetitive (there's about three differnt types of Cyclopses, etc.). Some of the enemies are spectacular, though; the Forgotten One absolutely amazed me. Music is deep and engaging throughout the entire game; I wish that I could get my hands on the soundtrack.

However, the main thing that drives a game for me is the story. I'm willing to overlook some gameplay considerations of I think that the story is good, and this is where Castlevania really succeeds. My revealing only a little of the overall story at a time, the game successfully kept me hooked. And the scene where Leon and Sara are reunited and the events that follow--I personally think that's one of the best scenes in video gaming history. I won't say anymore, you'll have to play for yourself.

Basically, don't rank this game as a follow-up to Symphony of the Night, because it's not. Don't dismiss it as a Devil May Cry rip-off, either; I, personally, liked it much better than Capcom's horror title.

Tough to beat, but worth the effort!

If you like challenges, then you'll love this sequel. The monsters are moderatly tough, the obstacles can drive you MAD (but oh, the feeling of joy once you get past them!), and the game is not linear at all. You get to pick and choose which zones of the game you'll start with.

There are a LOT of hidden secrets, items, etc. Upon beating the game (mwahaha!) you're given the "codes" for extra long-time fun gameplay. The replay value of this game is excellent. The Graphics are spectacular (especially the lighting), and the load times for the PS2 cd aren't even noticable. This game flows with elegance, taste, gore, and good old action gaming. Worth every penny! And for goodness sakes, don't consult a walkthrough--use ya' noggin!

Castlevania: Lament of Innocence is a great game that has been a long time coming. When any classic series is translated and morphed and placed in a new setting, in this case 3D, you will always have a portion of the purists who insist that you have comitted one of the 7 deadly sins. Then you will have the other half who will applaud your efforts and thank the stars that something new has come of something old.

This game strikes people differently and has a mixed acceptance ratio. I, for one, love this game and am pleased with the finished product. The developers have dealt with problems that plague the translation of a classic franchise, and they have come through the process with a great finished product. The game is awesome, and by all means, should be judged on its own without the cloud of expectation cast over it by its predecessors.

The game developers have made the jump into the 3rd dimension, not an easy task to say the least. At last, we are presented with a huge castle, tons of monsters and cool effects the way that they were meant to be seen. The effects and animations are superb, the whip is realized in 3D in such a way that makes it easy to control and cool to watch. The old sub-weapons are back, and now we have the added effect of relics and other items that can be equipped.

The inventory system is easy to manage and items can be bought and sold, found and plundered- ala Symphony of the Night for PSOne. You can equip different armor and acessories like rings and jewels and things of that nature. The bosses are huge and animated impressivley. The dialog is somewhat laughable, but who really cares anyway? I certainly dont...if I want good dialog, I'll rent a movie or something. Gameplay is what it is all about.

The castle that we find ourselves exploring is actually quite large, and surprisingly easy to navigate thanks to a great in-game map feature. The numerous bosses dont have to be beaten in any order, and so a ton of freedom is introduced. You will find yourself wandering through halls and rooms several times as you acquire different items to aid you on your quest to destroy that pesky vampire once and for all. While this may seem to be a large amount of backtracking and wasted effort, I found myself enjoying the journey.

With a large cache of unlockable and secret rooms, some cool optional bosses (Elementals) and one big bad beastie hiding in the basement for you to find, many players will find themselves being pulled back into the castle after they have finished the game so that they can acquire that coveted 100% completion percentage.

This game is awesome and should be judged on its own. The gameplay is slick and smooth, the animations are first rate, the castle is huge and the visual style, while somewhat repetitive, is great as well. The fixed camera may seem at first to detract from the whole experience, but the after a few moments of playing you wont even notice. The developers had a huge challenge to overcome and in my opinion, they have done an admirable job of doing so. To be sure, I would rent this one first and then decide if it is worth the buy. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Castlevania- in 3D!!

I know many people thought that this was the first Castlevania game in 3D, but what they meant was that it was the first GOOD Castlevania game in 3D. The first 3D Castlevania was for the N64 which (many people will disagree on) was terrible. Confusing and choppy, Konami reversed it and came up with this 3D gem.

This game is one of the best Castlevania games ever made. You play as Leon Belmont in the 11th century, packed with your traditiononal whip, daggers, throwing axes, etc. The whole health, magic thing hasn't changed except for that you have orbs that are very good. One orb shoots about 10 daggers that travel and hit an enemy, and they only use up hearts.

The environments are done beautifully. In a very haunting area, the rooms have eerie stained glass on shining on the floor from the moonlight. Many look the same though, causing lots of confusion and "was I just here?"s. The music is the best in any Castlevania game. The opening room in the castle taunted me in my dreams, as the choir arrangements were done perfectly.

Attacking enemies couldn't be more fun with a whip. Taking an almost hack 'n' slash approach, you whip many different classic enemies like skeletons, zombies, etc. There are very cool combos, and a light, quick whip attack and a strong but slow whip attack. The game also keeps track of how many consecutive hits you deal to the enemy.

Last of all, the bosses shine like never before. Combined with the frustrating but seemingly fun technique used in the previous games, and the simple strategies make it like any other Castlevania game. The other important thing are the secrets. There are many secrets which hold different orbs, upgrades to your whip, and 4 bosses! Good luck finding them, because they are VERY hard to find.

Overall, I would buy this game. If you're new to the Castlevania series, you should start out on the GBA to get the idea of it and the feel of it. Or, if you're up for a fresh challenge, start out with this.

Awsome

Woot Konami! Lament of Innocence rocks!
However, it's not perfect for instance, lose the real-time item selection, i mean, come on I hate a really easy game, such as Devil May Cry, but i found it a bit difficult to use items in battle and not die. I don't like that. And i have a really old tv, that has a bad picture, and i couldn't read the gothic writing, such as the names of the 5 parts of the castel.
Other than that, i didn't have much of a problem.I loved the sub weapons, the A/V, and the enemies were neat(except for Red Skeletons, grrr).
Over all, it's a great game, although i wouldn't recomend it to a beginer, it's pretty challenging.
