okay, 1st off this game is awesome as all hell. from the jewelery, clothing and Tats(forget the haircut guy its a waste of time) i've been playing this game for almost a solid weekend, and at 1st i didn't like the new gameplay look over the Vendetta but hey. but here are my serious GRIPES about this game so far

#1- how come you can beat a guy upside the head with a crowbar/pipe and they can get right back up and still beat you convincly like nothing happened?

#2- why as the Character "SUSPECT" (who is MAXED out) do i get my a@# handed to me on a regular basis in battle mode by Carmen electra. WTF!?!

#3- why can the oppenent jump right back up(even before you can) after you use a Blazin' finisher?

#4- what is up with constant loading & the 20 sec. loading before matches, UGHH!!!!

and before you losers startin "itchin" that i'm complaining i play on the hardest level all the time and i like some sort of realism now that we're in 2004 and not when i 1st started playing video games back in '86 so when i crack the lead pipe over some fool 3times consecutively i think its piss poor programming that dude can jump right back up without having to go through a dizzy spell. FLAVA FLAV!!!!!!!!!!!

i got more but, the game is still GREAT.

TRUTH be told...

I REALLY wanted to give this game the esteemed 5-star rating. Sadly, I can only give it 4 stars. Let me explain. I have NEVER played such a DIFFICULT game on the PS2 console...and I was playing on EASY mode! Additionally, I went out and bought PRIMA's Official Strategy Guide thinking I could enhance my gaming experience...no such luck. First, the fighting is way too fast to get the hang of in a reasonable amount of time. Second, I found the controls to be cumbersome, and at times overly sensitive. Third, I found the game to be unrealistic in that when you've got an opponent in the "Danger" zone and you're bashing their head in, they IMMEDIATELY recover and start whooping you with no avail! Fourth, I've noticed that when I use the "Taunt" feature to increase my momentum, the opponent gets off the floor even quicker than usual and attacks from long distances with lightning speed. Fifth, often times the opponent will launch a string of attacks that bring you in the "Danger" zone within seconds and leave you wondering, "Am I even playing this match?" Lastly, there is no Practice Mode to master your fighter's capabilities in a more controlled environment. Overall, I found myself senselessly tapping away at the buttons on the controller to try to make "something" happen. Furthermore, I must admit that I prefer the fighting system from the first installment in this series (Def Jam Vendetta). Nevertheless, this is the COOLEST game I've ever played and I can honestly say I'm addicted. If you like fighting games, don't even hesitate to buy it! Just be prepared to dedicate many frustrating hours to the mastery of this game. I'm going on 7 hours...

The lines have been drawn, where do you stand???

Okay, I admit, I bought Def Jam Vendetta simply because it was the first "wrestling" title that incorporated anything that resembled hip-hop culture. It was a great experience. So naturally, I bought Fight for NY. Ladies (trust me, ladies will want to play this game) and gentleman, a quantum leap in gameplay has been made. The action is more streamlined. The number of playable characters is greatly increased. The additions of creating a character with the help of a POLICE SKETCH ARTIST!!!!, getting tattoos, haircuts and the all important visits to Jacob's makes this a very unique experience. I cannot give this game a five star rating as much as my sore fingers and my female friend's sore fingers (and I think damaged eardrums from all the screaming) want me to, because of the following:
1) The training system - You 'train' with Henry Rollins but it's merely spending Development Points...I would have rather have a system like the one in Fight Nights 2004 (shameless EA Sports plug) or a combination of the two.
2) The learning curve seems a bit high. I am a gamer and I have the rounded fingertips to prove it. My female friend is not and although she could pick up the sticks and have fun, she didn't win a single match until I helped her train via two player mode. I think there should have been either a deeper tutorial (let's face it, fighting House in the beginning is not a tutorial despite what the plaque on the wall in your crib says) or a few street brawls against some weaker fighters for the non-gamer. Which leads to:
3) Fellas, if you have a girl...you have to let her help you pick out clothes...or at least the bling. Nothing says I love you like buying a diamond encrusted Def Jam Logo Medallion. I say that, because there is not a female character to create. Sure you have cuties in the game that you can compete for...but what about you and your woman...going head to head against Lil Kim and Bone Crusher in the Tag Team mode.
4) Lastly, although I am a gamer and use this medium to escape reality from time to time...I like my alternate universes to be realistic. I think the storyline is great...turf wars have been around since, well EVER!!! I think the game could be better if the storyline wasn't so linear...I mean when you are fighting for clubs and such, I think it should be one and done...or arrange it to be the best 2 out of 3, using different fighters at the end of each bout. Winner keeps the club. Based on your result i.e. if you lose, the storyline takes a different twist.
*****SPOILER ALERT*****
Because when you fight Crack (AKA Fat Joe) for all the clubs, if you don't win, you get to try again and again and again and again and again....*hey I tried this many times and I only had the game one day* The game is literally begging you to win so gameplay can continue, whereas it could be, 'Hey you lost. Crow owns all the clubs...now you have to figure out how to get them back.'
*****SPOILER ALERT OVER*****
All in all, the game is the type of sequel that we beg for and it lives up to its' billing. Well worth the time spent and hours of lost sleep. Well, the lil lady just got KO'd by Carmen Electra....that mean's IT'S MY TURN!!!!!

Def Jam Vendetta was cool, but hey... cool does cut it. Cool doesn't get the cake. No, fantastic, an urban legend, marvelous, 5 stars, and addicting is what cuts it. And that my amigo, is Def Jam Fight for N.Y. It has everything a game could need. Blood, violence, trash talk...(Unsuitable for children under 15 is what i think)..,today's music and celebrity's, and just an overall 1,000%. Stars, rappers, and actors feature in the game such as Ludacris, Redman and MethodMan, FatJoe, Carmen Electra, Shawnna, Ice T, WC, Mack-10, FlavaFlav, CrazyLegs, Omar Epps, Busta Rhymes, Lil' Kim, Memphis Bleek, Lil' Flip, Snoop Dogg, and so much more that it would take at least 2 hours to name them all. With all of last year, and today's music such as What's Happinin' by Method man, Stand Up by Ludacris, and plenty of varietys. So take it from me. Normally in my past reviews I would say, " Rent before you buy", but for this occasion, I say, "Buy or Rent, but I'd prefer you to buy".
Oh my word, you will fall in love with it the minute you place it in your games system. It's more addicting than some one who has been smoking for 2 years is to cigarettes. Okay, maybe not that much, but this game is 1-2 players, has a variety of techniques to learn, and graphics is an A+. Overall = 1000

Great Game, A Little Short

This is a great game with an intuitive fighting engine. The only downside is that the story mode can be beaten too quickly. I rented it for 5 days and beat it twice. Yes, you can do individual fights, but you have to reload it after every fight. Might be worth full price, but I personally am waiting for it to go Greatest Hits.

This game i excellent

I loved this game. As a huge fan of Vendetta I decided to give this one a try and all I have to say is 'how can you inprove on perfect, the answer is this game!' and thats the truth. Vendetta was one of my favorite games, but the replay value was a little lacking...what they did here was make each time you a play a different experience because of the create a fighter mode. Between body size, skin color, eye color, hair style and clothing not to mention the size of face as well as features including tattoos you have an endless amount of possibilites for gameplay. The game is very user-friendly. There are a few fighters that are frustrating to beat (Xibit is one of them) but for the most part it's pretty fair. (Trej at the subway is another one who takes some time) As you progress in the game and earn points as well as money you buy new clothes as well as upgrade your abilities and skills by training with non-ther-than Henry Rollins (awsome!) My only, and I mean only, dissapointment with this game is that it doesn't include DMX who was my favorite fighter in Vendetta. The inclusion of Carmin Electra, Lil' Kim and the other 'girlfriend' options was great, and the option to pick which girl you want to take home was even cooler. They should have kept the gallery though, pics of these hotties would have been nice. Next game they should get hotties like Brooke Valentine, Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas, Ashanti, Pink, Christina Aguilera or maybe even Paris Hilton for the game. Overall, this game is awsome and bound to please any fighter fan.

A game franchise in the making.

Def Jam Fight for New York is an evolution from the WWE wrestling games like WWE Smackdown! and Bring the Pain, and it really shows.

The graphics are first class and the music and FX are better than any fight games on the market. The storyline and create-a-fighter modes are genuinely addictive. The free form way the custom characters can be modified and enhanced add to the enjoyment of the game, especially collecting all the "burning taunt" special moves.

The controls are difficult to begin with but not insurmountable to learn. Once the controls are mastered the environment attacks and double team attacks come into their own. Subway fights (where opponents can be thrown in front of trains!) and the car battles (where opponents cars can be trashed during the fight) are just laugh-out-loud features of the game.

The game only gets four stars overall due to its repetitive nature and the impact of luck in critical fights, although it can be argued that it reflects reality.

A final point to EA...

Please continue with this franchise, there is a niche where this game fills, it is not a fight sim like the Fight Night series, or Martial Art fist fest like Tekken, Dead or Alive and Virtua Fighter, or Wrestling Franchise.

It is unique and fun. More artists/Fighters and side missions would make the game a must buy.
