Better than FF Tactics!

Disgaea: Hour of Darkness is a quirky strategic role playing game that packs in far more gameplay than I will ever be able to see! Atlus, the developer, especializes in anime-style RPGs with an original sense of humor. Final Fantasy Tactics is the only other game I could compare it with, but I find Disgaea far more entertaining due to its off-the-wall characters and dialogue.

Disgea: Hour of Darkness takes the old-style Final Fantasy Tactics and breaths a new life into that play style. From the character selection and expansive growth of those characters to the weapon improvement, everything about this game makes it competitive and fun.

Ok, I'll admit - the storyline, the prinnies' dialogue - its enough to make you want to turn it off at the beginning. I'll cede that point ;) However, I've never immensely enjoyed a game so much as this one, _despite_ its storyline. The storyline in itself is amusing, often funny, it made me smile many times, but it really plays out like a cartoon for kids in many ways, with a bit of adult sarcasm thrown in.

This game's storyline though, is not its selling point.

It is, quite simply, THE most customizable strategy game I have ever seen for any platform.

You have a handful of storyline characters and a virtually limitless ability to recruit NPC units and level them up how you wish. There are many different character classes all of whom have different special abilities and attacks, also each of which have different weapon proficiencies. Then add all the weapon types and their own special moves, and you've already got hundreds of combinations. Want a mage with a bow? A healer with a battle ax? Some will be harder to level up than others, but there are absolutely no limitations as to who can be equipped with what, except that 'monsters' (which you can recruit, and level like regular characters) have their own special weapons.

So essentially, you can make a character of any class you want, equip them with whatever you want, as your strategic whim takes you. Disgaea utilizes the traditional "stats" (ATK, DEF, HIT, INT, RES) and so forth, and various items add various of these stats.

You can use the 'dark assembly' to unlock more item types in the shop, and once you level up your shop rank, you can unlock 'more expensive' items as well. Each item is randomly generated with 'specialists' - little creatures that live in side the items. Some of these give certain stat bonuses, others give other enhancements, like xp bonus, or weapon-skill xp bonus, or mana bonus, or the ability to cause a status effect on an attack, etc. Disgaea allows you to use the innovative 'item world' to go inside the item, subdue the specialists, and once subdued, mix and match them between items. Also, 'legendary' and 'rare' items have more floors in the item world ( a randomly generated dungeon with great xp and items, to begin with). The deeper you go in the item world, the more the item levels up. With time and effort, you can create absolutely godly, fully customized equipment for each of your characters.

Then there's the 'master/pupil' system, in which a master receives a portion of the stats of their pupils when the pupil levels. In this way, you can have a mage with other mages as their students, and when the students level up, the master becomes even more powerful for their level. Or maybe you want to raise the mage's defense, you can have warrior pupils. Its completely up to you. One use of this system is to raise a healer-type character's INT, so they can use ranged magic.

Oh, did I not mention that? The master, if standing next to a pupil, can level up and learn ALL a pupil's skills. Its possible to make Laharl, the main character of the game, learn all the mage spells, even though you can't technically change his class to a mage. You can have your clerics learn them too, you can have your fighters learn buffs/debuffs and the ability to heal themselves. You can teach anyone anything, if you're so inclined.

Then there's reincarnation, which sets a character back to level 1 but you can create them with higher stat growht, they also retain most of their weapon levels and learned skills. So if you have a mage who has learned all magic, you can reincarnate them as something else and they can still do most of their mage stuff, and so forth. Reincarnation also can make your characters twice as powerful as they get stat gain all over again (not to mention their masters) - but you do have to level them again from level 1.

There's a lot of unlockable content with the assembly as well, areas to explore and so forth. There are unlockable classes when you attain a certain amount of mastery with a weapon or certain classes are unlocked. And there's replay value in that a New Game + allows you to keep your characters and items when you start.

So, all in all, Disgaea is a tactical strategy RPG that puts absolutely no limits no you as far as customizing your party. Want to put a mage in heavy armor? Your prerogative, they wont nuke as hard but they can take a beating. Want to min-max your characters for maximum pwnage? Disgaea gives it to you.

The best part is, in games where you can make yourself uber-powerful, there often isn't anything challenging to FIGHT once you're there. But the item world, as well as some (secret!) bosses in their depths, can challenge even level 1000+ characters. I've got over 500 hours played in Disgaea and quite honestly, I still twitch to go back to it from time to time, however right now I am playing the sequel ;)

Disgaea: Hour of Darkness is an awesome videogame. There are multiple main characters, plus many other characters that you can create. The storyline involves a contest for who will rule the Netherworld, and the play mostly involves fighting on boards with various set-ups requiring different characters and tactics. The game is similar to Final Fantasy Tactics, but much more complicated. One can "go into" items to raise their level and to capture Specialists inside them. (This is similar to entering dungeons.) This is our favorite videogame of all. If you like strategy and tactics, you won't be disappointed.

I'm a big fan of both comedic fantasy, and of demons, so from the start this game seemed up my alley. I was not disappointed. Not only on the surface was the game visually aesthetically pleasing and hilarious in content-- below all that was a very interesting treatment on the nature of good and evil, and the capacity of demons and angels for both.

This game has it all, guys. It's not to be missed, and I recommend anyone who finds themselves even remotely intrigued by it check it out for themselves.

ive been playing disgaea for a while (100+hours) and i can see why people play hundreds of hours of this game. i would recommend picking this game up if you find it anywhere. its well worth the price you pay. the graphics are amazing but surprisingly pleasing to the eye and the animations are great. the ability to customize about everything in the game is awesome. the court system and ability to bribe the court was a genius idea. overall this game is awesome and everyone needs to run out and get a copy because it will be hard to find soon.

Disgaea, what does it mean? Who knows but anyway Disgaea is a great game that you will instantly fall in love with as soon as you play it. The game is divided into 14 episodes and with each episode you can obtain more jobs. But heres a review for Disgaea: Hour of Darkness

Concept- Take and arrogant prince and send him on a quest to obtain the throne of his father

Graphics- Not impressed, but good

Sound- Tsunami Bomb's the Invasion from Within is cool and so are the voice-overs, other than that the music's like a mixed tape.

playability- easy to pick up

Entertainment- a long lenthy Strategy RPG that will keep you busy for weeks

Replay- High

This game is wonderful, halrious, exciting, and above all execesive. If you were to compare it to the standard of the genere, Final Fantasy Tactics, it is very different. While both tactics had a serious story line, Disgaea's storyline focuses on humor, but with a just with little points of seriousness to keep you liking the story. Also try La Pucelle Tactics, which is made by the same company(Nipon Icchi), runs on the same graphics and gameplay engine as Disgaea and comes out in May!

I love this game. The style of animation, the storyline the characters, and the personalities, once you get this game you will eat, sleep , and breathe it. You are a demon prince who has just been awakened from a two year sleep to find out that your dad The king has passed away. The story just keeps dishing out the plot twists. You can add some bosses from previous levels to your team and even choose characters from the Dark Assembly. Their will be times when your not sure what to expect, actually this will happen all the time. If you are reading this and you haven't picked up the game yet DO IT NOW!!! In the Nether World You never Know who or what will show up next. Etna is the funniest character ever and at times certain plot twists are guaranteed to make you cry!! YOU WILL LOSE YOURSELF IN THIS GAME:) If you don't believe me I have posted my e-mail address and I'll help you decide whether or not to get a game or try it out, all you have to do is e-mail me :)

Disgaea is a great game, complete with duel language track, and some really funny dialouge in the short story scenes there are. It has it all, from Power Ranger wannabees to people be exiled for stealing pretzels. And of course... exploding penguins! Seeing as you can create any character from a group of classes, some people create these penguins to be literal nukes, dealing around a million damage. Seem like a lot? Not to worry, this particular game lets you level to around 9999.

However, next to all the brillance, there is a slight graphical problem.. Graphically, it's a playstation game. Simple as that, they could have made it on the playstation, if it wasn't for the duel language track, and other space munching additions. The graphics make it more of a game for anime fans... in other words, people like me.

So in overview, if you like SRPGs, or you don't mind a bit of sexual content (Nothing major) or slight graphical problems, and you do like anime-ish characters... (yes, a lot of conditions, most of which have no meaning if you like the humor) BUY. THIS. GAME. NOW.
