Standing the test of time

Starfox was one of the first games I got into. You gamers know what I mean - that game you play for a while at a game store, you find you have to buy it, and soon you're staying up all night muttering to yourself over and over again, "I'm gonna beat this ..." It's as if the game killed your sister...but so much more.

This game was like that to me. Back when I was a young'n, and my family had just bought the SNES, we got this game just for me. It was mine. My own. My precious...and I played it religiously. I played it over and over again, not caring if I died because it only meant I now knew what not to do. Soon...I had beaten it. And as I heard the great theme play over the stereo and saw the credits fly by, I knew that I had done some thing great. Didn't know what that thing was, but who ever cares?

I still own our SNES, and I still own that very copy of Starfox that I played so long ago. This game is still fun - its fairly simple, fly a blocky ship (the Arwing) and shoot the other blocky ships. You have a single laser gun on your Arwing and four plasma bombs to fire once things get tough. Later on in the game you can catch special power-ups to get twin-laser guns, and if you catch it again you get the best weapon in the game: the twin plasma. Imagine two guns on your Arwing that shoot big balls of energy, destroying any thing that gets in your way. If you can get twin plasma before the final boss I would suggest it - it can really help you and make the fight shorter.

As most of Nintendo's games, the levels are all like one big acid trip (play Super Mario 64 if you don't believe me). The bad guys' ship designs are pretty creative, and boss fights include a showdown with a giant mechanical spider and even one where you go INSIDE a spaceship! There's even a level where you fight a giant dinosaur, if you dare to take on the more difficult levels. The space levels are especially true of the LSD influence, with blocks thrown at you as if you were in the Tetris Game of Hell. Its all for fun though. The gameplay is easy but fun, and the music is like a poor man's Star Wars - its cheesy, but God do I love it.

Oh yes, and if you don't rescue your team mates when they're chased by enemy bogies, they can die. This sounds dark, but it can be very pleasing when you're in a bad mood...

Its sad for me to see Nintendo turning Starfox McCloud into another one of their recycled characters like they've done to Mario and Link. I was especially mad at "Starfox Adventures" which - even with the Arwing level - found itself dominated by ground trooper Starfox. That would be the equivalent of turning the Tom Cruise's character in "Top Gun" into a LA cop. However, despite what the future may hold for McCloud, I will always turn to the original for my old-school enjoyment.

Whenever a baby cries because he's hungry...whenever a teenager can't find a decent channel to watch...whenever there's a cop beating up on a guy...I will gladly strap on my flight jacket, hop into my Arwing, and launch off to defend truth, justice, and furries every where!

THE 16-bit On Rails 3D Shooter

When it comes to 3D on-rails shooters (Panzer Dragoon, Star Blade, Sky Gunner), there are a few that stand out. This is one of them. Perhaps the first of its kind (most notably because of it's polygonal graphics), Star Fox transcends the limitations of the Super Nintendo to become a classic for the ages.

Granted, the first stage isn't quite as lovely as I remember it being (the graphics are indeed quite simple and the draw distance is sadly quite limited), but once you get past it things really take off. The in-cockpit view is awesome, featuring one of the coolest looking targeting sights in gaming history. Your fellow wing-men will get in trouble and need bailing out. You can boost past your allies to avoid accidentally shooting them (or to keep from getting hit), or slow yourself down. Your ship can lose a wing, causing it to control awkwardly, and you can dodge enemy fire by spinning your craft.

Normally I would talk about negative points, but besides the date of the graphics (and perhaps the sound capabilities of the system, if midi music bothers you) could possibly hinder this game. The gameplay is awesome, and only improves with time. There are three different routes to take (and secret levels!) which adds to replay value tremendously. And let's not forget the fact that the levels are incredibly well designed, the graphics are used to maximum effect (man that hyperspace jump is awesome looking!), and the music is some of the best in any game ever.

This game is truly a classic in every way. If you love great games, you'll love Star Fox. And if you love 3D-on-rails shooters, you MUST HAVE THIS GAME!!!!!!!

This game is awsome! Your A fox named, uh, fox I geuss. You fly through levels in different courses, and shoot bosses and enemies. This was the first game to use the super Fx Chip to make it 3D, get this game it rules.

My heading says it all--this game is truly a classic. It's easily one of the best SNES titles of all time, not to mention one of the greatest all-around GAMES of all time. I only wish that I hadn't sold my copy way back when... Indeed, I'm really kicking myself now. If only I could find it new... :-( Anyway, if you're a Super Nintendo fan, then get this game, and get it NOW. With cutting edge graphics (for its time) and a fun-factor that goes through the roof, Star Fox delivers.

Still fun

This is the original SNES Star Fox game, which puts you as Fox McCloud in an epic, space opera rail-shooter adventure. The game was notable for including the Super FX chip, which gave programmers the ability to create 3D objects with simple polygons.

I booted up this game today, and it's still a blast to run through. Yes, it's very primitive 3D - you can count the individual polygons on each object - but the designs are creative and Nintendo found some commendable ways to make distinct, varied worlds with what they had. It always marvels to see the programming feats and innovations of the 16-bit era, and Star Fox is the pinnacle of that.

More importantly, the game plays well. A couple of the later FX Chip games suffered by pushing 3D at the cost of gameplay. The framerate in Star Fox does suffer a bit in the later levels when there's so much onscreen, but overall the game plays exactly like a fast-paced shooter should. You get your upgrades, barrel rolls, adjustable settings, multiple difficulty levels, and a few secrets to discover - not bad for a game that could've just cashed in based on its graphics.

In the end, this is a Super Nintendo classic. Like the original Mario Kart, it holds up well despite the numerous sequels that have followed. Worth adding to any SNES library.

one of the best shooters ever

Many Star Fox games have been released since the very first one that appeared on the Super NES. The only one I have ever played was the original on the Super NES, which also happened to be the most groundbreaking of all the Star Fox games, and it's a challenging and exciting game. Perhaps the only game on the Super NES to have more enemies to shoot at than the Mega Man series. The levels are packed.

You're a fox, and you fly a plane. You fly through the universe shooting and avoiding all sorts of wild looking creatures. That's basically what you do. You have animal friends available to help make your journey slightly easier. It's a good idea to try to help out your friends if they're in trouble because keeping them alive might be to your advantage later on in the game.

In Star Fox you really have to tap that shoot button because the further into the game you go, the more enemies you will encounter. This is one tough game here folks. Much harder than the Super NES Mega Man X games, and certainly much harder than the Mario and Donkey Kong Country games. But come on! You need a solid challenge every so often! But it's certainly beatable. And this game never gets tiring either.

I remember when this game first came out and how a certain store in a mall had NOTHING but this game all over the shelves. This game was packed on the shelves on the wall and the shelves in the middle of the store. It was everywhere! You couldn't avoid this game if you had to! There must have been thousands of Star Fox games at that one tiny store that one weekend, when the game first hit the market. The game was that popular.

Everyone was making a big deal about this game because of the never-before-seen graphics. Sure, today the graphics look pretty outdated and even more so compared to the newer Star Fox games, but at the time this was some new unique stuff that showed signs of the future of video gaming.

I always feel satisfied making my way through Star Fox not only because it's a hard game, but also because it's a fun game. Not a dull moment to be found anywhere. Enemies constantly fly at you from all over the place. Exciting stuff.

You have three routes you can take. Level 1 is the easiest and Level 3 is the hardest. I can't even beat Level 3 in all the years I've been playing this game. I can make it to the end on a good day but basically I'm lucking out. That doesn't mean the game requires luck. Just the final two places in Level 3 require some luck. I can beat Levels 1 and 2.

Incredible music. I love every theme. Very much like outer space music. It all works.

You can find this game for a couple dollars these days. One of the coolest games on the Super NES happens to be reasonably priced. Pick it up.

The precursor to the long running Star Fox series

Star Fox wasn't a bad game at all. In fact it was pretty good. I don;t think it was a 5 star game but it was definitely a good game.

You are the trick-fighter pilot Star Fox and you are accompanied by a Frog and a Rabbit (sorry the names aren't coming back to me) and with their help, you destory evil enemies and their warships in an attempt to bring peace back to the galaxy.

O.k. first off the game play was very easy to get used to. All you had to do was aim, shoot, dodge and occasionally, pull off the barrel roll shooting which was fun to do. Anyone could get this game and get good at it and for a lot of people, that's a great part about a game.

One of the things that I truly didn't like about Star Fox was that is was a 1P only game. Honestly, why give you a couple of guys that help you through out the game if you can't have a couple of your friends come over and take control of those characters. I think if this would have been a multi link game, a lot more people (than already established) would have been all over this game.

The other thing that bothered the pants off me was that your 2 buddies never help you when you need them. I was getting grilled by a dozen enemies and all those 2 could do was hang out and watch me get beat up. Again, what's the point of having extra characters to help you when they don't do anything to help you. All they did (at least when I played) was get beat up and I'd have to save them everytime but whenever I'd have someone on my tail... "oh watch out Fox". Thanks for nothing!

Even though those were 2 really annoying parts of this game, it was still fun to play and again, any level gamer could get really good at this game. I'd get this one and also Star Fox 64 because it was even a great improvement to Satr Fox.

I didn't like this game very much. Although it was a pretty good game for the time period it was made, it still didn't impress me. Maybe it is because I perfer ANY Mario game over a lot of other games.

I got this game thinking it would be the coolest, and it turned out to be alright, but not suberb. The game itself is fun, graphics(which I make a big deal out of) were like the beginning of "3-D", since it does have polygon graphics.. The ground is not detailed, just green with wierd dots on it. In space though, you have the choice to be in your cocpit or viewing the backside of the ship. Your buddies, Toad, Falcon, and Rabbit say the same things over and over again.
Overall this game is pretty exciting, but you may wanna think it over.

A VERY FUN SCI-FI GAME 8.5 OUT OF 10

Although this game isn't as good as its N64 successor, this sci-fi adventure is still among the best in gaming. While the 3D graphics look horrendous, it's interesting to see how it worked back in the 16-bit era. In some ways I like the level designs better than Starfox 64's because they feel more creative and more interesting. For example, one part of the game is like a space version of the ocean with whales, stingrays, and more sea creatures in this interesting environment. I like how the villain Andross is designed as well, in fact it's kinda creepy(And he's a fighter in the upcoming Super Smash Brothers Brawl). The missions are still exciting and wierd to this day and it is a very rewarding experience. Though time has done some damage to this game it doesn't feel very worn. Oh, and by the way, Slippy is still an incompetent pilot as he was in Starfox 64, and Falco is still an ungrateful d*** as he was in Starfox 64.
