INTENSE FPS ACTION AT A NICE PRICE

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 12 / 16

I was playing REVENGE OF THE SITH and got a little bored with it. I said to myself, "I need to put down this lightsaber and get me some guns." Even though I bought this a while ago for 50 bucks, it was just sitting around the house because I put so much time in on KILLZONE. I looked at the manual for the controls and popped it in. I wasn't expecting much. Not too many people liked it. Well, I have to say this one is definitely a lot of FUN!! And guns are way better than lightsabers anyway.

I've never played GOLDENEYE for N64, so I can't say how it stacks up. I thought EGM magazine said it was the same engine. I don't care, I'm having a blast with this!!

The character was a little clunky at first, but I got into the OPTIONS during PAUSE and ramped up the SENSITIVITY for the X and Y axis almost ALL THE WAY. Now the action is fast and I'm moving well. Getting a handle on the controls EARLY is essential. You can only carry one weapon in each hand at any one time and some weapons require 2 hands. 2 handed weapons have a ZOOM feature as well as the SNIPER RIFLE. You also need to pick up weapons that are dropped, very quickly and on the fly. Grenades look weird, but you can throw them far. The animation makes it look like you're throwing a candied yam. Yay. You can only throw grenades with your left hand and only when your left hand is empty. So I learned very quickly to drop my left-handed weapon and throw a grenade, then pick up the weapon again in my left hand in one quick movement. Again, learning the controls early is ESSENTIAL. I've never played an FPS with 2 handed weapons, so it was a nice change to have 2 triggers on the L1 and R1 buttons. Very nice.

The difficulty of this game goes up very quickly in a short amount of time and the game is hard going in places. Firefights are intense and cinematic. Keeping a cool head, using defilade, and reloading constantly is a must. The game is designed nicely to give you the proper cover in most situations. Someone here complained about the difficulty. It is hard and I would recommend the EASY setting for newbies. But, if you're an FPS veteran, you'll find that wading through the enemy is at times fast and furious. At other times, bumrushing the enemy will get you killed. The reviewer below said you'll kill at least 100 guys a level. I just completed the VERY LONG Hong Kong level last night and clocked in 262 kills. Wholesale slaughter at a very decent price.

You'll also receive BONUS POINTS for imaginative kills and taking enemies hostage for defilade is very cool. Enemy AI can be very smart or very dumb. Just like in real life. Enemy death animations are stylish and real looking. However, the game doesn't feel realistic, but more like a cinematic anime cartoon. Okay by me.

Health regenerates when you're hiding and you can pick up the armor from dead enemies if you haven't unloaded a whole clip into them.

Most of the weapons are standard fare. Don't forget to use the 357s. They have some punch I was not expecting. But, there are some clever weapons too. Some guy was shooting green darts at me, so I killed him and picked up his VENOM PISTOL in my right hand. I shot the next enemy with it, paralyzed him, then took him out with the uzi in my left hand. Very Bond.

One of the coolest features is the GOLDENEYE. With 4 different devices that you earn along the way. After completing 3 very long levels, I acquired 3 of them. One of the EYES sees through walls, stairwells, and objects. Which is very handy at times. Especially when you're looking to see how many enemies are hiding behind that barricade. And when you're using the RAILGUN which shoots through walls. Other times you won't need it. One of the best is the HACKING EYE, which can be used on the machine environment to kill, disable enemy weapons, or move objects. A welcome feature that makes you feel like a hightech killer. Mastering their use is essential to mastering the game. Learn to use them early.

I think the graphics are awesome. They can be a little trippy or weird at times. Not as good as the cell-shaded look of KILLZONE, but very anime none the less. My favorite environs so far where the Bathhouse in Hong Kong, the Snowdome, and the Vegas Casino.

The music is incredible and gives that cinematic Bond feel to the proceedings. Make sure you check out the song in the ending credits. Very funny lyrics. "I wanna stretch my limo." Use the THX PRO LOGIC if you have it. The surround effects work GREAT. The game also has a WIDESCREEN setting.

Why does everyone compare every game to HALO!?! Is this the only game people play? Okay, your loss.

I haven't played the multi-player and I don't have broadband for online play, so I can't comment on those functions. But, if you love FPSs this may be right up your alley. IT'S DEFINITELY FUN!! And the PRICE IS RIGHT!!

ENJOY!!

This game is fun

this game is a lot of fun, I don't really care if it is'nt lifelike it is still fun. in this game you can walk into a room full of enimies and just shoot them down with 2 guns. to me that is fun.

A bit like the Ugly Duckling of the EA 007 Chain.

"Take EA Games back to School." Edited quote by Hai Fat: The Man With the Golden Gun.

After the sheer disappointment of "Everything or Nothing" being a *gag* Third Person Shooter, I was willing to play any 007 game to get back into the First Person Mode (FPS). While the game did have some logical errors with the Series (we'll get into that later). It was a small breath of fresh air, from the other side of the Gun Barrel.

Graphics: 8.5/10: EA Games brought itself into high water by advertising some of their locals for the game. Some of these include Goldfinger's Midas Casino, Goldfinger's Auric Enterprises (completely re-vamped for the 2000's) as well as the infamous Octupus lair from "The Spy Who Loved Me." Overall, EA does handle these challenges well, almost pushing the player into the world of Goldeneye.

Sound: 10/10 OR 0/10: I make the score different as EA enlisted the help of Techno/Trance DJ Paul Oakenfold to compose the tracks for the game. Obviously if you or the gamer-in-mind loathes techno music, the rating will be definately lower. My own opinion, the normal person will have no problem with the music. Two other plus' include that EA signed on Dame Judi Dench and, an aged, Christopher Lee to voice "M" and Scaramanga. Why they didn't find Honor Blackman for Pussy Galore, I'll never know, the stand-in didn't thrill me at all.

Gameplay: 6/10: The first five minues of the first level encompasses the calibration of your character. While I give EA a bit of innovation points, you shouldn't hold your breath. In addition, once I was able to level my crosshairs correctly, I was able to pull off one "head shot" after another. The controls get the job done, they aren't anything special. The dual wield feature is nice in the sence I can control a high powered pistol in one hand, and a fuly automatic weapon in the other hand.

Logic: 3/10: Anyone who has even remotely heard of the 007 series knows that the characters of Oddjob, Auric Goldfinger, Francisco Scaramanga, Dr. Julius No, and Ernst Starvo Blofeld are all dead. The first level is a 2004-ized simulation of the assault on Fort Knox from Goldfinger. You are on a 'chopper with 007 when a missile strikes and the 'chopper goes down. From the start of the level, you are safely on a platform, while 007 is hanging (somehow) from the wreckage of the crashed helicopter. Within seconds, 007 plunges and gets squished to his death. Afterwards M states that the player was directly responsible for the death of 007.

I've still yet to figure this out...really I am.

The training exercise is a bust, M says don't let the door hit your butt on the way out, and your character pulls out an offer to join Goldfinger. Somehow, you and Dr. No fight (I'm not quite sure on this one either) and No shoots your eye out. Scaramanga's "contacts" then seem to make a prostetic eye that has multiple functions. Although in The Man with the Golden Gun, Scaramanga states that science was never his subject.

Another one I haven't figured out yet.

Overall: 8/10 (with the 10/10 Sound): The game was a nice return to a normal First Person stance. The music and locals were nice, even if the logic was a bit... non-existant. Definately a Renter, but I'd wait until the prices drop a little before shelling out money to buy it.

Great $20 game.

This is a great FPS game. You can hold two weapons at once, allowing combinations that can be fun and helpful. Unlocking items can be difficult if that's what you're going for. Overall, it's a FPS Bond game. Working as a Rogue Agent is a little more appealing than saving the world, but that's just me.

It's a really good game -- you should get it!

From my 12 year old son: It's got great graphics and I like how you can hold 2 guns at once. The guns are really cool. It's just the best game -- you should get it!

Why save the world, when you can rule it.

Wow, the first 007 game you can play as the bad guy. First, Don't let the title fool you because its NOT a sequel to 007: Goldeneye AND you do NOT play as 006. In the beginning, you must push James Bond off a building,YOU must push JAMES BOND 007 off a building to let him fall to his doom (you should be like ???). Because you did that, MI6 suspends you. Soon you meet Goldfinger, who is in a war with Dr. No. Later you lose your eye, courtesy of Dr. No, and it gets replaced with a golden one, thanks to Scarmanga(aka The Man with the Golden Gun). So mostly the game is about revenge, punishment, and Psychic powers, (yes you heard me correctly). You can use powers such as Telekinesis and the ability to see through walls, plus, you can hold duel weapons such as machine guns, pistols, and genades. Well I can't wait for this game[...]. Well bye-bye for now.

This is one license to kill you won't want revoked...

We've all watched at least one James Bond film and seen how the villians live...big mansions, sexy women, huge underground lairs. So at least once you've sat and wondered what it would like to be the bad guy. Well with GoldenEye: Rogue Agent, your chance to be a baddie has finally come.

First off, this game is not exactly a sequel to the classic GoldenEye game for the N64 that most of us remember from less than a decade ago, far from it. This GoldenEye refers to the codename you assume throughout the game. You start off as an agent in training for MI6 going through a training exercise involving Auric Goldfinger's plan to irradiate the gold supply in Fort Knox. When your recklessness and disregard for life (especially Bond's, since he also is in the exercise)get you dismissed from MI6, you find yourself in the employ of Goldfinger and his organization.

But during a mission assignment, Dr. No (the very first Bond baddie) shoots out your eye and wounds you. A friend of Goldfinger's, Scaramanga (voiced by Christopher Lee, who originally played him in "Man with the Golden Gun"), implants a golden eye (NOW do you get the title?) that grants you amazing abilities like x-ray vision, an electromagnetic hacker, and a distortion shield. Your total mission is to find Dr. No, and show him exactly what "an eye for an eye" means.

Needless to say, the ability to wield two different weapons at the same time might not be too original (uhhh...Halo 2, anyone???), but the idea works brilliantly to assist you in dealing with your foes. In addition you can unlock special things throughout the game by executing Rogue Bonus moves and using Machine Kills (the freeze chamber is the sweetest one so far).

Also the voices in the game, which include Lee and Judi Dench (Bond's boss M) and the AI of your targets are top-notch. This is one time that having a license to kill is more fun than it should be...

I just don't get it?

I really don't get,all these review shows and magazines say this game isn't very good. Well I think it is very good. First off, the gameplay is awesome. I mean, duel weild mombas and you can take on a whole level. Who doesn't like shooting guys through the wall with mag-rails and your killer golden eye. Towards the end (or what I think is the end)is really hard. your trying to take on roomfulls of enemies and a boss(well a semiboss). Thats the weird thing is that the semiboss dudes are harder than the actual bosses. X-whatsername is like so easy, just take her sheild down and shoot her in the head a couple of times and she falls of the dam. That brings me to my next point that is the story doesn't really make sense either. what's up with killing oddjob? The multiplayer was supposed to be the best part in the original, but it ain't that good in this one. I would recomend this game for PS2 owners who can't get mature games(like me).

The game is fun and all but it could probably get boring after a while.I was glued to the ps2 for 3 hours and by the time i got off i had ot on the last level.the graphics are not that good but the gameplay is exciting. For some reason Scaramanga is Goldeneyes Q even though he gave you the goldeneye by shooting youre real one out.i like to take hostages and throw them into fire 20 feet below but i never noticed the whole EVIL thing the physics are not good but some times it can be funny to shoot barrelson elevated platforms where enemy bots are hiding with a bazooka and see all the FLYING carcasses fall into the rocky gorge below.Bad physics make the game a little bit more entertaining for example i shot a mine onto an enemys chest and then detonated it while his back was facing a 200 foot fall off a dam and he paused and then was tossed so fast i could hardly see it.And another example threw a grenade behind a desk where an enemy was hiding and then 3 mangled corpses come saliding out of the desk like somebody would slide a book across a florr.Pretty Entertaining. But EA made a masterpiece out of this compared to Everything or Nothing{the worst bond game.AI bots arnt as smart as there supposed to be they can communicate at least. But it is more violent then any other ps2 bond game{a good thing]I would this game a 4.5 instead of a 3 just because all the unneccesary destuction and all the overly elaborat and exotic deaths that "tragicly" occur during the game.

Look at the box. It says GoldenEYE!!!!!!!!!

Well what did you expect this to be cause this neither A) a remake and B) a sequel. The reason this game is named Goldeneye is because you have a goldenEYE, get it. This game has:

1) 8 chapters with sublevels in them (20 in all)
2) LOTS of guns, but you can only carry your pistol, grenades, and two other weapons
3) Many James Bond villians such as Goldfinger and Dr. No
4) Powers such as X-ray vision
5) NO life packs, instead, your health regenerates over time

Try this first though, because some people may not like it. If your looking for a game like Goldeneye, buy all the other 007 games. If your looking for a different James Bond experience, then get this.
