Nice to have these games

Amazon.com has listed this as the "King's Quest Compilation" instead of the "King's Quest Collection" which is clearly printed on my box for the game, as well as the picture on the website. I don't know why that is.

As for the game itself, I remember loving the King's Quest games when I was younger. I bought this game mostly for "King's Quest VI" which so far has seemed to work fine, with the exception of one time when the game kicked me out for no apparent reason. This particular version of "King's Quest VI" also seems to draw it's graphics from the original release of the game and not the CD release later on, so that was also somewhat disappointing. Captain Saladin no longer looks like Lassie.

Overall, it's nice to have access to these games for nostalgia.

Fantastic set of games - a blast from the past!

I still have fond memories from the past of the "quest" set of games. Police, Kings, Space...all were gems. There was nothing quite like wandering around for hours and finally finding the solution to that one elusive puzzle. Or finding an object -- a shovel, cupid's bow, or a smelly flower -- and envisioning just what zany way it would be used.

The Kings Quest series adds on a charming tie-in with popular fairy tales and mythology that we are all familiar with. Help the seven dwarves, defeat the famed Minotaur, or melt the wicked witch.

All of it adds up to a charming package of games that any nostalgic gamer will be pleased to own.

Now the bad... The package itself is hurridly put together. It's a couple of CDs in box. The game guides are not even printed out for you. Now this would not be too big of a deal except that the old Sierrra games had a habit of employing copy protection by asking you to answer something out of the manual. So you either print it out yourself, or alt-tab back to the pdf to get the needed information. On top of that, XP compatibility simply means that they install and run DOS-Box underneath the game. So little work was done to actually ensure compatibility. It's more a repackaging of the games. A couple extra features would have been nice.

Also, I like many wish that Vivendi had included the original version of Kings Quest 1.

All told, however, the thrill of seeing that Sierra logo pop up and the familiar tunes of a classic from my past was more than enough for me to overlook the negatives.

love the games, but this is a horrible product

i am a huuge fan of king's quest and i started with kq6 .. i was born the year kq1 came out .. anyway, i was so excited about getting this compilation and was really disappointed that the kq6 version on this is not the one i played as a kid. there aren't any text boxes and everything is vocal and the game speed seems a bit slow. but considering that this compilation is about $20, i'd say it was okay. i only play it for kq7 - yes, the firecracker glitch is still there, and the way to pass it is to keep restarting from that point - valanice moves a little everytime, and just keep restarting over and over until you get to the tomb.

tierra games has made a vga remake of kq1 and kq2 which is simply FANTASTIC (Google them now). i'd rather play that than the versions on this compilation. plus, the remakes are FREE. kq3 is also undergoing a remake as well.

it is really sad what vivendi has done with this product. the most impressive thing is the oustide packaging - and fans will know that isn't even saying much. the manuals have to be downloaded and printed, the compilation comes on 2 cds which are in those generic paper sleeves that you get when you buy the cheapie blank cd packages, and it doesn't even install right on its own -- you have to follow special instructions which vivendi anticipated because there's a separate sheet for it.

all in all, disappointed, but willing to take it because paying $20 to pay kq7 is worth it to me.

Frustrating venture into nostalgia

Ahh, King's Quest. I found my first copy of this collection in a neighborhood garage sale for 5 dollars, and was extremely disappointed when the games no longer worked on my XP system. When I found out this release was finally happening, I was thrilled. Thrilled, that is, until I got them out of the box and into my system. While it is wonderful to play the games without having to manually to set up the confusing DosBox program, the games do not all run smoothly on my PC. I read the reviews first and couldn't remember any "firecracker" bug in KQ7. But I reached Chapter 5 and came into contact with it for the first time. On my first copy of KQ7, I read the net and updated my cd with the appropriate patch accordingly and never had a problem with the firecracker. Why, then, would Sierra release the earlier version of this title? That bug renders the rest of the game unplayable. You could skip to Chapter 6, I suppose, but where's the fun in that? Another frustrating aspect is that if you try to exit the game and restart, you are saved automatically at the bug. So I load up my save to try again and proceed to watch Valinice explode forever. GRRR!

To be honest, I haven't gotten past KQ7. I tried to load KQ4, but the graphics went splotchy and disorted almost immediately upon playing. I tried minimizing my window and then maximizing it again, only to have the same thing happen within minutes. A VERY annoying graphics bug.

Overall, the price is right for 7 games, but be warned, you might spend hours attempting to update your DosBox and Collection with patches only to have the collection no longer load at all. Unless you are a very patient gamer about bugs, I would skip this collection. In this case, nostalgia is no match for shoddy and careless packaging of the product.

BEFORE READING VISIT: www.kqix.com

I am not sure if you all want to buy this or not. I know that I enjoy King's Quest and that you probably do too. But before you buy this from Vivendi consider this: Vivendi has canceled a fan project KQIX: Every Cloak Has A Silver Lining. I am not sure if you have heard about it but PLEASE look at this page before buying this product. www.kqix.com I know that I love the King's Quest series but I do not know if you want to buy this because of what they have done. PLEASE visit this page: www.kqix.com for more information. I don't know what kind of scheme they have but there is definitely something wrong with them releasing this and closing the project down. MILLIONS of fans are devestated and there was a production crew of over 40 people, a 1,000+ page script and they (Phoenix Freeware Online) has been working on this for 4 years. Once again, PLEASE look at this page: www.kqix.com before looking at this project, you may change your mind.

Thank you.
PLease help the KQIX project.

The product description implies that the software has been updated to run on Window XP. Actually, the cd includes Dos box. Which is fine, if you don't mind setting it up. Nevertheless, I'm glad to see the games get re-released. They are classics.

A great re-release! Don't listen to the negative reviews.

I have loved and played these games since I was very little, and I was thrilled to hear that they were re-releasing these old games.

If your are an rpg gamer of new games, you absolutley must try these old school games out! there great.

Yes it does not have the original original version of Kings Quest 1, but the remake is much better.

These games are on a 2 disc set, and run great on xp instead of dos YAY!
I love the way these games have been re-released and yes it dosen't have a manual but you can print one off! so its all good, and it still allows floppy saves!

These games even have the old school text, and or voices, and old school 16, 8, or 256 colors.

The price is just right for not only do you get 7 pc games for the price of 1, you get 7 timeless classic games for the price of 1.!!!!! It is an offer you can't miss, as I feel these collections will go out of print within the next year or 2.

If you get this set, please also try the Space Quest set, Leisure Suit Larry set, and the Police Quest set, all available from your local pc game store, or right here on amazon. Lets hope the re-release the qfg series too.

They also need to re-release the old old old sierra games that came on the original kings quest collection, but unless us gamers show some interest on whats here we won't get it, this is a good compilation and i'm sure the others are just as good.

Now lets look at the games themeselves.

Kings Quest 1 Ega Remake - A great game to start off the amazing timeless saga, it has a great story with alot to do. 5/5

Kings Quest 2 -A great follow up to Kings Quest 1 with an even better story and just as much to do still. 5/5

Kings Quest 3 - Quite possibly the most important game in the saga, and it has one of the best stories, without this game we would have no more stories for the continuation of the saga. 5/5

Kings Quest 4 - This game is a great game because its very unique and has a great story, you get to play as a girl this time. 5/5

Kings Quest 5 - A phenominal game with another good story that comes from 3. 4/5

Kings Quest 6 - This game has the best story in my opinion and its alot of fun. 5/5

Kings Quest 7 - I could never really get into this game ,it is more like a disney princess cartoon, however its still realitively good and you can play as valanice finally, and it ties up the lose ends, its just not as fun as the others. 3/5

As other reviewers have said, this product "runs" on Windows XP- if you download an additional program to allow it to run. The KQ6 is the original version rather than the more attractive second version, which was disappointing. The games are worth playing mostly for sentimental value, and they are fun, but this isn't the best release of these games.

You can never go back (At least on XP)

I remember the King's Quest series with fondness. It was the first set of games I had for my first computer. I played it over and over again. I loved the fairy tale aspect.

I was ecstatic to get it when Sierra released it for XP systems. But I just wish they had actually fixed the games to work with today's graphics cards and processors. Having my graphics at the lowest level, having to play in a window instead of full screen, having the timing go way too fast for the game (I don't know how to describe it, but a character has to carry a firecracker to a tomb. But my processer is so fast, the character would blow up immediately each time she picked it up). It was all too much and I wound up uninstalling it. There's only so much frustration I can take.

I loved the games, when I had an older computer. Now, they just don't work for me. They may work for others, but for me, King's Quest will have to stay a memory.
