DC Comics Fans REJOICE!

After so many Marvel games out there finally a decent looking game featuring DC's most popular heroes. For those of us who grew up reading DC comics this game is a dream come true.
The pros:
Wonderful realistic graphics that can rival the PS3.
Outstanding cinematics where you see all the characters up close, thus provide the storyline of why you're saving the world with your heroes team.Great voice acting.
Great combat system and use of all the superpowers of each hero. Also the change of costumes from the classic ones to recent new looks for certain main characters.
Ability to play with a friend and switch characters.Play in various modes; easy, medium, hard, elite and superhero.Though aimed mostly at a male audience, female players can play as Huntress, Hawkgirl, Zatanna and of course Wonder Woman.
Once finished you can open the extended play feture and have all your experience and new costumes and superpowers upgrades transfered to a new game mode of your choice.
Unlock other heroes as game goes on.

The cons:
Gets a little repetive after a while.
No mini-games.
Details on the costumes of some characters have been omited.
Only certain heroes can and must be used in certain levels.

Overall is quite entertaining and finally get to see DC most beloved superheroes in realistic 3D form. The controls aren't that tricky to use unlike previous games that featured Batman. I think a sequel should follow.

Special notes:
If you stop playing for a minute and a half without pausing, your heroes will say 3 different funny phrases about themselves or you as the player. All heroes have them.
Although there is a mention in the instructions booklet (for voice talent) about Supergirl and Black Canary, these two heroines do not seem to appear in the game at all.

An Alternative to Marvel Ultimate Alliance: Geared Towards Familes and D.C. Fans

To be completely honest, other than sport and racing themed games, the number of video games that two people can play together nowadays is quite small. The number is even smaller if you wish to play a game that has an extended storyline with someone else. Having grown up a fan of D.C. superheroes (instead of Marvel), I was quite surprised when my brother recently purchased JUSTICE LEAGUE HEROES and we were able to play the game together.

The game features seven members of the Justice League that each person gets to play at least one during the storyline of the game. If you choose to play the single player mode you get to play each character at least once, too. The members of the Justice League played in the game are Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, and Zatanna. As one progresses, other characters, including Huntress, Aquaman, Hawkgirl, and Green Arrow, can be unlocked and played at certain moments. The game begins with a clip showing a mysterious meteorite landing on Earth. Soon after Batman is called to Metropolis to aid the city in what appears to be a takeover by robots from S.T.A.R. labs. Superman arrives to assist and game play is underway. Villains fought along the way include Queen Bee, Brainiac, and a clone of Doomsday.

The game is fairly easy to play with a storyline streamlined enough for even grandparents to play with their grandkids. The game plays pretty much like a typical fight game, but there is some strategy has to be used throughout. The game also features some basics from RPGs that break up what could have been some monotonous moments in the structure and format. The visuals are well drawn as are the voice talents. Also, unlike many games like this, there are no little boxes, thought bubbles, or speaking bubbles that have to be read. The action moves fairly quickly and taken as a whole it seems very much like an animated film that one is being allowed to partake in.

My brother and I found the game to be a treat. It was the best video game of its type that we've been able to play together since the original NES Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle arcade game. The characters (except for Wonder Woman) are animated really well and the costumes follow the classic costuming for all of the characters. Superman and Flash are two of the most powerful characters to play from the onset, but I found it surprising to learn that after advancing just a few levels, Zatanna is perhaps the most powerful character to play (part of this is because of a heal spell she has that can heal both her and her partner if they are nearby). I recently learned that though Zatanna is a secondary character in the D.C. universe, she has played a huge role in some important events and is viewed by some members of the Justice League to be almost too powerful.

As much as I enjoyed playing the game, there are a couple of drawbacks. Though characters such as Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern, and Zatanna are drawn correctly their darker costumes sometimes blend in with the game's background making it difficult to see where they are and who they are fighting. Also, there are select times during the game that you are allowed to choose a character. However, most of the time you are automatically given one of two characters to play (though you can switch between those two characters if you wish). I liked it that everyone is given the chance to play each character at least once, but I wish there would have been a couple of more times to choose your own character to play. The final drawback of the game is Wonder Woman. Though her costuming is correct she doesn't have very many powers and she isn't drawn very well. Wonder Woman is supposed to be a powerful goddess, but she is very, very weak in game. Also, instead of a beautiful woman, she looks more like a middle-aged mother who would rather take a nap than defend the universe from an evil, hostile takeover.

Serious gamers might not enjoy JUSTICE LEAGUE HEROES, but I recommend it for families, especially those with children, as well as D.C. fans who enjoy playing video games.

Better than Marvel Ultimate Alliance

I own both this game and Marvel Ultimate Alliance (MUA) (on PS2) and despite some reviews, I strongly feel that Justice League Heroes is far superior! Why?:

Better/More Straightforward Gameplay/Graphics - Two heroes on screen at one time is perfect for this game. Sure, four (as in MUA) sounds better but it really isn't. In MUA, you rarely even notice what your teammates are doing because you are paying attention to your character. With four heroes on screen at once, MUA gets very cluttered and requires a zoom out level that makes the heroes appear the size of lego people. Sure, you can zoom in but MUA is simply not designed to zoom in to the level were the graphics detail is on par with Justice League. At that point, the gameplay on MUA suffers because enemies off screen are firing at you, etc. All this is resolved in Justice League. The graphics have perfect detail to deliver clear and comfortable gameplay. Likewise, in Justice League, it is very easy to keep track of your partner and coordinate attacks, etc.

Better story and more straightforward goals: The animations in Justice League are outstanding (as they are in MUA) but unlike MUA, there is nto a lot of BORING text boxes that the users has to sit through to deliver Pym's helmet (yawn!!!), etc... Also, MUA can get confusing and it is easy for the vague goals to lose the player. This is almost never the case in Justice League. Sure, the clarity of the story sometimes limits your hero selection, but that is a much better alternative than having Elektra fight at the bottom of the sea...

Overall, Justice League Heroes has better graphics, better gameplay, better story and better characters (you can ~be the ORIGINAL Flash, Jay Garrick!!! :D). Marvel Ultimate Alliance is based on a terribly outdated game engine that makes the game play more like Diablo 2 than anything else. (Diablo 2 is still more fun to play than MUA...).

Justice League Heroes - 5 stars, hands down! Solid and up to date.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance - 4 stars. Good stuff, but it feels like an overly ambitious game released in 2002.

Phoning it in

My wife and I were thrilled when JLH came out and got it immediately. We're both big Justice League fans (mostly from tv) but could not help but be very dissapointed with the game.

We played two-players and enjoyed the different abilities of the characters. However the overhead view (much like the X-Men games but not as good) often obscured the action and lots of tight spaces made running in tandem difficult more often than it needed to.

Worst is the "dramatic" depiction of the characters. Not to sound too nerdy here but, Superman is supposed to be, well, nice/good, but was portrayed as overly testosterone-y. The cutscene graphics were outdated and made the heroes look unnatractive, the storyline was very simple and showed very little creativity. With the wealth of DC story writing they could have done so much better.

The game was very short (about 15 hours). There were destructable surroundings but you don't get anything for destroying your surroundings, like power-ups or secret items (and we broke everything breakable...everything). And when the game ended, it just sort of ended, no cool closing cut-scene for completing the game, just looping graphics behind the credits, no easter-eggs (that we found anyway), nothing much at all.

The designers/developers needed to play a few other games to see what they were competing against. I would rather assume they didn't instead of assuming they did and just chose to make a comparitivly weak effort at a game that so many were looking forward to.

So, if you want to play as The Flash, or unlock Hawkgirl, you can have some fun, but I would warn any buyers to keep their expectations very low because the designers seemed to be just phoning it in.

The Justice League is finally here!

This game is awesome! I love it. They all hold such awesome powers; it's great to actually play some of my favorite DC heroes esp. the Flash. If you're a fan of superheroes or just fighting games, this game is for you!

A good start

I typically agree with most of the comments here. It's a very linear storyline, just like the Baldur's Gate, Champions of Norrath games from Snowblind Studios.

My enjoyment came from exploring all of the different super powers of the heroes and using them in combat. In playing the heroes, you got the feeling that the programmers took pains to craft each character's abilities as they should be. The fact that they did this AND made the interface as simplistic as possible is really the best part of the game.

So, overall, if you're a fan of superheroes, this game is worth it. I'll be excited to see some improvements in a sequel, though: namely non-linearity of gameplay and flexibility of character selection.

Justice League is an awesome game, but a little short on play time...

I recently aquired Justice League for two reasons: 1. Because if you love anything to do with comics and superheroes than this is right up your alley and 2. Because of the appeal from the Marvel Legends games that it seemed DC was finally about to receive it's day in the sun. When I first began playing the game I was a little miffed that I couldn't choose my superheroes, but I understood the reasoning behind the fact that I needed to learn how to operate with certain characters before moving on to the more advanced (and not so powerful) ones. But do not be disheartened...eventually you get to choose. The other thing that I immediately noticed upon buying the game was that it was only available for up to two players...and that is a slight sticking point because to truly enjoy any "build 'em up" superhero game, you have to be able to enjoy it with friends, and I don't know about you, but I certainly have more than one friend out there interested in playing this game! The graphics are excellent for the system I was playing on (xbox) and overall I enjoyed the storyline, but I wished I could have played on longer...just as I was getting a few of my superheroes up to a decent power level...the game was over (although, just like in Marvel Legends, it does allow you to continue on with the same characters starting over). I do enjoy the "shield" collecting in order to purchase new costumes and Justice Leaguers, but I believe I collected as many shields as possible in one game and I still have things left to buy, so choose wisely! Picking up boosts and combining them in order to improve certain powers on superheroes was a little confusing at first, as some combos work better with others...just keep in my mind that no boost will go above level 6. Overall, the game was well worth the purchase price eventhough it was short on playing time, but I have no doubt that I will be going back through the game several times to up my superheroes and take 'em to the max!

all the greatest superheroes in one game...

the graphics are great, the powers are very well thought out and cool (the flash zipping around the screen at super speed, the different green lantern powers, and of course the big guns like superman's heat vision, etc.). the best thing about this game is you get to use the real top shelf superheroes (batman, superman, wonder woman, the flash, green lantern, etc.), with their own different costumes and powers. this game is different than x-men legends in that you don't have to run around busting all the environment (boxes, etc.) for powerups and xp. which makes this game a lot shorter but it's refreshing to not have to spend 10-20x more time in a level busting boxes after you beat the bad guys. the only things i wish were in this game other than a bit more length is i wish there was some between-level place to run around like the x-mansion in legends (like maybe the watchtower or the bat cave or the fortress of solitude?). and i wish there were famous flashback missions like in legends. but then again jlh gives you the best heroes, whereas in legends i liked the game but don't really dig the x-men.
one big plus in justice league heroes is the cutscenes and voice work are top top notch. ron perlman has the greatest batman voice ever. i never thought i'd get chills hearing someone say 'i'm batman'.

A Mindless Boring Button-Mashing Game with Heroes in It

I finished the game and had to write a review on this game because it was so bad. The game is basically a button-mashing game with no excitement. I found myself trudging through the game just so that I could finish it. Otherwise I would have spent a lot of money for nothing. If you are a novice gamer, you will get bored with this game. If you are a veteran gamer, you will stop playing in ten minutes. Don't waste your money on this game. It felt like a game the company rushed to put out in order to cash in on the super hero craze and/or holiday spending. There are many games out there that are super hero games out there that are a whole lot better like X-Men Legends I and II. They even came out way before this dud.

All Done!

I got this game when it first came out, and I've already finished it. By no means am I a gamer, but this game was not challenging at all. You would think that the powerhouse superheroes like SuperMan and Wonder Woman would be tougher. I was able to beat the bosses without dying once. This game was a big dissapointment. At least Marvel Alliance comes out tomorrow!
