Impossible to Install

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 6 / 11

Received game yesterday. Went into loop when disc 1 inserted.
Could only stop by powering down. Tried disabling auto
insertion notification on CD drive and running setup.exe.
System (Win98SE) said "setup.exe not a valid win32 app."
Tried naked boot of win98 (run msconfig and eliminate running
autoexec.bat, config.sys and all the startup group items).
Still says "setup.exe not a valid win32 app."
Noted that the date on this setup.exe is 10/2/98 while the
date on the earlier Beyond Atlantis is 1/13/99. Why use an
older setup.exe? Dreamcatcher customer service no help
and no call back.

Good, but short

I was torn between giving _Beyond Atlantis 2_ four and five stars. I finally settled on five because, though short, it is the best and most cohesive game I've played in a very long time.

(...) I had no problem at all with installation or running the game. In fact, it ran remarkably smoothly, with clicks and pans that actually functioned (...). The interface will be familiar to those who have played _Beyond Atlantis_, with different cursor symbols for dialog, interaction, and acquiring inventory, and easy right-click inventory access. I find this interface so practical that I'm always amazed when developers think up ones that are more complex. Also like _Beyond Atlantis_, all dialog can be replayed.

The animations are abolutely stunning. Character and object movement was immensely detailed and realistic, particularly in some of the third person cut scenes. The vocal acting was also above average. At times the main character's French accent was a bit hard to understand, but I was so tickled that she didn't sound generic that I didn't care.

The plot involves solving puzzles in four main areas. Each area was well-developed and individual as far as design and story. The puzzles, however, were a bit samey -- mostly the apply inventory variety, although there were a few minor logic puzzles and skill puzzles. Math based and sound based puzzles were conspicuously absent. Overall, I felt the puzzles were too few and too easy. With one or two exceptions, you just had to look at them to solve them.

The end game was anticlimactic and getting to it involved a device or two that seemed a bit contrived. But it did give a solid ending to the story and manage to tie in with both the previous Atlantis games.

Overall, I really liked _Beyond Atlantis 2_. I just wish it had been longer. Experienced gamers can probably expect to complete the game in 10 hours or less. Still, as short games go, this one is worth playing.

The Bagdad Magic Garden makes the game special

This game has one special level that makes the game sparkle and stand out for it's originality. In search of a Black Rose, the plot within the plot unfolds, in a magical midnight garden filled with strange creatures, seductive Harem girls, and a tower to the stars.

Another highly original repeating theme is the crystal skull, where you travel through brain synapses in search of the secret passage directions.

I highly recommend this game. I really enjoyed the middle sequence of jumping from small little islands up into a floating island. (Can anyone say Schizm, but with a flair of fun. Schizm was sooooo joyless).

Anyway, this game is worth every penny, and hey, some of the acting is excellent (It must be hard to transcribe French to English, and make the words fit. I can't imagine trying to voice over animation in different languages).

I've played better

I'm not a hard core gamer, but even I realized that this game is just above average. It was far too short, the main character's voice acting was horrible, and the story had no depth. I found myself wondering what the big deal with the skull was, and it ended right where it should have begun. The graphics were wonderful and the puzzles were fun, but it only kept me occupied for 2 days. If you want a true gaming experience, go for the "Myst" series; those games are a true treat.

Sheer disappoinment

After the brilliance of Beyond Atlantis (Atlantis 2), I fought hard to get a copy of BA2...... Whoa, what a disappointment! From the wooden voice over delivery of the principal (I am an Acting and Voice coach so have a little experience here) to the uninspired plot, worlds, and game in general. Additionally, the game ran very roughly on my computers (new one, well within the min. req)and failed to keep my interest. Did finish it, though-- in only a few hours. If you must play this game, wait until it hits your local electronics discount store in the $4.99 bin.

Fun Game but too SHORT!

I really liked this game- great graphics and storyline- sort of ties in with Beyond Atlantis 1. But the game is short- Beyond Atlantis 1 took MUCH longer, and I loved that about it. This game is great, but I couldn't believe it ended so fast. Needed to be longer- definitely.

Install problems, game made no sense

I agree with others who had install problems. I also could not get the first CD to be recognised or install the game on my machine. I luckily have two computers and tried the install on the other (Windows ME instead of Windows 98SE) and it worked.

Then I had to try and figure out the stupid puzzles. I did not find them intuitive at all. Some were easy, others made no sense. I agree that the graphics were stunning, but I play games to PLAY, not look at pretty pictures. If you want to rate that way, 5 stars for looks, 1 star for substance.

sometimes boring

The game in the whole is not bad although it doesn't tie well together. Every adventure is not linked to the other. You change worlds, collect items and solve puzzles, but basically every world is a new start. There is only one element that links the whole game, the dolphin in the skull and that part is really boring since you have to look for the dolphin but there is really no way to find it but luck! I was hoping for something more challenging. The storyline was a bit lame also.

An Immersive Experience!

This is one of the few adventure games I've liked so far. What I really liked about the game are the puzzles, the graphics and the music.
The game offers a variety of puzzles. Most of the puzzles were interesting. I especially liked the one were you had to rearrange the story of the Pharaoh at the Temple of Isis. I wish they were more puzzles of this kind in the game. Another favorite is the constellation puzzle.
The graphics are simply beautiful. Playing the game is like seeing a dream. At times the game got a bit slow and if it were not for the graphics I would have quit playing.Once in Baghdad the game gets more interesting.
The game lacks a good plot. The events in the game are hardly related to each other. You just keep jumping from one place to another in order to solve puzzles.
Some of the characters were pretty interesting. The protagonist is an archeologist in search of adventure of course. Everything about her was cool except that her face though pretty lacked expression. I found other characters livelier like the psycho pomp and the thief. I really loved playing the thief.
The controls in the game are very easy. Just a matter of clicking the mouse.
Nope. I didn't have any problem installing the game. It ran perfectly well on my computer.
Overall this game has a lot to offer to any adventure fan. Try it!

Good, fun, great graphics

A beautiful game, with minor drawbacks. I had no problems installing it, it ran very smoothly. The plot is not very cohesive, but I didn't mind at all. Just a load of fun travelling from world to world and solving the puzzles. Wich, I must say, are not so difficult as some people would like you to believe. You definitely don't need a walkthrough for this one. The game is perfectly rendered, the graphics are Myst Exile quality - much better than had expected from a game that is relatively cheap (and much better than, for example Schizm). The main personage is a sort of Lara Croft, including the Tombraiderstyle clips, but the acting is horrible however. The faces of the personages look like they have all been very, very drunk last night. That should have been much, much better. The voice-acting is bad. So a star off for that. Having said that, I would recommend this game. It's fun, it's reasonably immersive and it's worth the money. I applaud the makers for continuing to make adventuregames, some perfect, some just fun. For this kind of money? A good buy.
