If you are a mortal kombat fan then this game is a must buy, everything is better than deadly alliance. If you are not familiar with mortal kombat franchise then you are missing out big time. Mortal kombat is the best fighter game, better than soul calibur, tekkan, virtual fighter, street fighter, dead or alive, and guity gear. This game in my book is a top 5 game of all time. This game is very violent, sick, and twisted! So if you are a parent do not get this game for your kids.

The intro is awesome, nice real computer graphics, much better than deadly alliance! The loading scenes look better too. While Mortal Kombat Deception might not have the best stage graphics but the stage design is the best. Each stage feels like a realm. However, the graphic of the characters is SUPERB, slightly more detail, real, and shiny. The graphic of the weapons, projectiles, and clashing is SUPERB too. The sound is great too! Then the RED BLOOD, lots of blood! Like previous mortal kombat, each character has 4 levels of "damage wear", as the match ends your character might look beaten up depending on your energy. So its nice to retain high health when you kill your friends off then the "untouched" pose kicks in confirming your superiority! Or it can be a "ugly" victory. And the infamous fatalities, now 2!! The stage fatalities are cool and more strategic and better but they dont work like old school mortal kombat games, for example you can knock the opponent into the pit DURING the fight if you force him off the edge of ground unlike old school mortal kombat you do all stage fatalities AFTER you win the round. The stage design is much better than deadly alliance with multi-tiers too!

GAMEPLAY: The fighting engine is TRUELY A WORK OF ART. It feels SO balanced, you have to play to believe! The 3 fighting style design is awesome. You have total control! You can fight with or without weapons. There are connector or juggle moves for each style so its very easy to do YOUR OWN CUSTOM COMBOS. This game is easy for all new comers but this game is very very deep.
This game plays and feels like its got the best world of Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Tekken. JUST SIMPLY UNBELIEVABLE! The story and setting of this game is cool, it feels fantastical, mythological, and futuristic. Shang Tsung and Quan Chi are gone. It would be nice if there was a shape-shifter in mortal kombat games....

WARNING: To unlock the hidden character, customes, and stages you HAVE to play the konquest mode so you have to work for them! The konquest mode is a training mode but its pretty good and better than deady alliance. You get to travel and learn about mortal kombat world and characters. The graphics for konquest mode is not that good, it gets the job done. The bonus chess game is not a traditional chess game nor the old school battle chess type and when you konquer a piece you have to fight that piece via a regular arcade type match. Pretty disappointing but the tetris like game is better.

Graphics: 4.5/5, Sound: 3/5, Gameplay: 5/5, Story: 5/5, Replay: 5/5, Fun: 5/5, control: 4.75/5

12/10: My copy of Deception was weird. The sides of the screen bends in a bit, like an hourglass shape. Then just yesterday the game crashed in Konquest mode. So I exchanged for a NEW copy and the distortion totally disappeared! Both sides of the screen have perfect straight line now. I thought ALL copies should be the same, this was very weird.... Midway?

With online play this game is so sweet!!!!! Overall this game is awesome, a must buy! Don't forget to check out Mortal Kombat the movie and Mortal Kombat Annihilation.

Its back... better then ever..

Based on the previous engine, with more enviroments, destructible stages, more stage specific fatalitys, tons of new fatalitys per character... you can even suicide now, before your opponent "finshes" you... looks great.

New characters, old characters, and a new story mode. The trailer is up, and this game looks great....

this is mortal kombat at it's best

and this is coming from someone who plays almost ONLY rpgs.

the first day i played the game, i only played konquest mode and the puzzle game. it's so good, even the part of the game that isn't really THE GAME is great.

konquest mode in this game is WAY different than it was in deadly alliance. it's practically a VERY large game in itself...it even has storyline! i still haven't completed it.. i think i have over 5 hours on it.

the puzzle game is wicked fun. in fact, it may even be more addicting than tetris.

the chess game is a bit difficult to keep up with...it's not like regular chess. you actually have to fight a mortal kombat battle in order to take a piece. kind of confusing, but worth looking at anyway.

as for the actual game, it's great as well. the interactive backgrounds are my favorite thing about it. there's nothing more fun than knocking people into grinding blades, or knocking them off a REALLY high place...so they can fall on a sharp rock.

the kript is as annoying as usual, but it really makes you want to get koins, so you can get all the characters, and all that jazz.

as for everything else, graphics are great, pretty much the same as deadly alliance. gameplay is the same too, except in conquest mode. also, there's no jabbing a weapon into someone...which i think was just fine to take out. sounds and music is improved.

i have a feeling this game will keep me occupied longer than most rpgs i play. that disturbes me and makes me very happy at the same time. i suggest gettin on the ball and pickin this up.

Mortal Kombat fans will love this game

This game is the latest game in the series, and in my opinion one of the best. Though it may not have as many of the characters as some of the others, it does have a great variety of characters; old favorites like Baraka, Mileena, and Liu Kang, (all of whom were absent from the last game). My favorite character is Noob/Smoke, who as MK fans may have guessed is two characters in one. Another one of my favorite characters is the newest one to the mix: Shujinko. Both of these are my favorite, because of their wide range of combos, and special moves.

For this version they revamped the Konquest mode, and made into a sort of RPG, with lots of side games, and battles. The story is pretty straight forward and laid out so if you want you can beat all the side quests you want and it won't interfere with anything. In fact I personally think the side quests are a little harder, but a little more rewarding. The story itself goes from the first Mortal Kombat all the way up to the start of this game as well, but you're playing as an unknown character named Shujinko. In this game you also get a little background info on some of the other characters. As with the last game you still at some point have to train with the different characters, but not all of them. Some are conveniently left out like Noob/Smoke, and Shujinko himself. If you've played the last game you might know that the hardest part of learning how to use a certain character is mastering his/her different style-branch combos. For these you just have to keep at it, and eventually you'll get it. They were at least nice enough not to go into the more difficult combos that require more than one style change.

Now on to what we really want to hear about: The Fighting. I don't know how exactly they did it but the grapics are actually better than Deadly Alliance. The fighting itself is the same old goryness you would expect from a Mortal Kombat game, but then again who wants it to change. The arenas are better than the last game and are sort of a cross between the arenas of Deadly Alliance, and other previous ones. I say this because there are actually two parts to the arenas now. After you get bumped into the second part of the arena, there is a death trap that automatically kills you if you get bumped into it. Also as a knew feature to this game there are a couple of weapons in certain arenas you can pick up and use like your main weapon. Now you may be asking yourselves about the fatalities, well in this game each character has two, yes TWO, along with a special Hara-Kiri move if you lose. These are just as greusome as ever, but sometimes they can seem to be a bit repetitive, because half of them involve someone's neck being broken, or someone ripping someone else's head completely off.

Now as well there are Puzzle Kombat (which is just a MK version of tetris) and Chess Kombat, which is my personal favorite. In both these games there is a lot of strategy involved, so it keeps you on your toes, but it still keeps the fighting element you know and love. And let's not forget the newest feature of them all, the online feature. All in all this is a great game and not just for the long-time MK fans, but also for the people just getting into Mortal Kombat. 5 stars

An Improvement over Deadly Alliance, if little else...

Mortal Kombat: Deception had been long-awaited by MK fans, after the surprising success of Deadly Alliance. However, you may realize within 5 minutes of playing the game that Deception is not really a new Mortal Kombat game, but actually a moderate update to Deadly Alliance.

The game picks up immediately where Deadly Alliance left off, with a shocking opening cinema revealing the death of Earthrealm's heroes, and featuring the return of the dreaded 'Dragon King'. With this powerful foe resurrected, unlikely allies join forces to battle him but are unsuccessful. With both Shang Tsung and Quan Chi apparently dead (for now...no one stays dead in Mortal Kombat for more than a game or two), the Dragon King is now free to rule the realm, but he would not have been able to accomplish this had he not deceived Shujinko, the game's new main character, into resurrecting him in the first place.

The intro is exciting and very well done...compared to the laughable opening cinema of Deadly Alliance, Deception's opening vid is gorgeous, with outstanding graphics, music and sound. It definitely hooks you and gets you wanting to play the game. So, what does the game itself have to offer?

Not much different than Deadly Alliance at all, MK:D features returning characters Sub-Zero and Scorpion(of course) alongside some of Mortal Kombat's more obscure classic characters, namely the stars of Mortal Kombat 3. All of the classic characters of the previous game have been sacrificed in favor of these 'one-game wonder' classics, featuring fan-favorite Kabal, the enigmatic Noob Saibot, Sindel, Nightwolf, Jade and more. These characters return alongside a series of new characters, some of which are interesting, others which almost seem to be out of place with Mortal Kombat.

The fighting engine itself is virtually identical to Deadly Alliance, which may be considered a flaw by some, and a blessing by others. You can still change between 3 fighting styles on the fly, 2 martial art and 1 weapon. The same tricks apply, though some of the more unbalanced fighters have been tweaked, but unfortunately the tweaking has made some of them worse. Because of this distinct similarity, some returning characters from the previous game play identically to how they played in the previous game. For example, I was able to pick up the game and beat it with Sub-Zero in about 15 minutes in my first play through, as his move sets were nearly unchanged.

Gone from this game is the 'impale' manuever, which allowed for players to lose their weapon ability in favor of jamming it through the opponent so that the opponent will constantly lose health through the round. In its place is a very flawed, very easily abused 'Breaker' system which allows characters to automatically break out of any combo, instantly. This makes for very unrealistic and ridiculous gameplay. For example, an opponent being juggled in the air will suddenly drop to the ground on his/her feet and knock the opponent away, out of the combo. Thankfully, this easily abused system is limited to only three uses per fight, so it must be used wisely.

Contrary to what you may have heard, Mortal Kombat: Deception does not feature stage fatalities or pits. Instead, we get 'Death Traps' which are exaggerated, over-the-top 'ring out' conditions. So in other words, instead of falling off of an arena and seeing 'soandso wins', you are treated to a gory death sequence from one of the arena's grisly contraptions. Some arenas have more than 1 death trap. Others have no death trap at all. In any case, death traps do not end the fight...despite being chopped to bits in the first round, the second round will begin as if nothing happened, making the novelty of Death Traps wear off VERY quickly (I got bored of them within 2 days) and making the fights more ridiculous and unrealistic than ever before in this series. Thankfully, the invisible walls of Deadly Alliance are gone, and death traps can be disabled for a more fair fight (as death traps are easily abused).

Fatality fans were disappointed with the abysmal finishers in Deadly Alliance. Deception more than makes up for this with 2 fatalities per character and a new 'hara kiri' move, which is the famed 'suicide-ality' that fans have been rumoring since the Mortal Kombat 2 days. Though Deadly Alliance featured probably the worst fatalities in the history of MK (Quan Chi comes to mind), Deception has some of the most gruesome, creative, and violent ones yet. However, many of them are still redundant and ridiculous, so don't expect to like them all.

It seems the overall fighting engine and graphics were sacrificed in favor of MK's 3 bonus games. One game is 'Puzzle Kombat', which is the Mortal Kombat take on the widely popular 'Super Puzzle Fighter' series from Capcom. The game is frustrating and unrewarding, but addicting if you get the hang of it. The other game is MK Chess, a very interesting take on the classic chess game that has you select fighters to be your specific piece classes. However, you cannot simply take a space from your opponent, you have to fight for it. It is a fun deviation from the normal game.

Last but not least is Konquest, which I thought was an excellent but poorly executed idea. You play as Shujinko from teenage years to adulthood, and the story leads you through how Onaga the Dragon King came to return. The game clearly tries to expand on the precedent set by Soul Blade/Soul Calibur series with the edge master mode, just on a much more grand scale. Unfortunately, all Konquest boils down to is mindless, repetetive fetch quests and ridiculously hard challenges that yield little reward.

Every MK fan has been waiting for the online component, and now you have it, though it is quite flawed. Cheat devices are easily implemented, and fights are often unbalanced, due to the gameplay issues with infinite combos and the like. However, facing total strangers is fun, and while its not quite like the old days I remember of jamming quarters into the Mortal Kombat 2 machine and beating opponent after opponent, it gets the job done. However, there are many players who simply abuse repetition, and server lag tends to favor such tactics, making the online component a real downer in the end.

Overall, Deception is a nice addition to the Mortal Kombat library, even though it is little more than Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance and a 1/2. It sacrificed the previous game's most popular characters in favor of bringing back half the MK3 cast, effectively making the game nothing more than a showcase for the one-game wonders. The game makes no remarkable improvements, and even steps backward on a few issues. However, Kombat fans will love the game and will love to see their old favorites return.

Bottomline, the game feels more like an expansion pack to Deadly Alliance rather than a new game in the series.

This is one of the best MK games ever. It features many modes of game play. There is arcade mode, the basic fighting to the top mode, Chess Kombat, a chess like game with a special twist and MK charactors, Puzzle Kombat,an interesting puzzle game with fatalities, and Konquest mode, an open world mode whwere you play as Shujinko to help him in his life long mission to "help the Elder gods." There is also the Krypt where you purchase items and unlock them, such as fighters and prodution art, and Kontent, where you view your unlocked items.

Pros:
*Awesome graphics
*Fun gameplay
*Level fatalities
*Many old charactors, Such as Sindel, Jade, and Kabal
*Many game modes

Cons:
*Many charactors are missing, like Sonya and Johnny Cage
*Can seem too bloody at times
*Konquest mode can get too repetative and not fun alot

Story:
Earthrealms best heroes were defeated by the deadly alliance leaving only Raiden to defend Earthrealm, but was defeated, and the DA had won. But they soon turned on each other, leaving Quan Chi the winner. But the Dragon King, Onaga, returned from death to reclaim Outworld and a new alliance was formed in desperation of Quan Chi, Shang Tsung, and Raiden. Seeing that They would lose Raiden released a large amount of power to defeat Onaga, Killing the three. Onaga didn't even get a scratch from it. Now you must defeat Onaga, to save the world.

This is an awesome game, but has little appeal to non MK fans.

this game is awesome; a must buy

Mortal Kombat Deception has new features and is even more bad ass then Defiance. There are new characters and more moves. You can be launched by your opponent through differant floors of the level which could mean more fighting or a plummit to certain death. Weapon pick ups make it possible to beat your opponent even more ferociously. Most or all characters have a new look to make them more intimadating and the graphics and sound will blow you away. Mortal Kombat Deception is a must have for 2004!

Gets better everytime

So here we have it, the next installment of mortal Kombat in the legendary series, probably the best selling beat 'em up game out there right now. I have always been a huge fan of MK. The good points and improvements are as follows:
This time MK have brought back some faces from the past from MK 2 and 3 and this time they are bigger and better. They have also brought some new characters in the game. What would an MK game be like with no fatalities? well thats not the case here, as usual there is the good old fatalities, this time some more new ones and players also have 2 fatalities each, as well as 1 Hara-Kiri, which forces your opponent to kill themself. Detail of the game remains as strong and gory as ever, more realistic now. Most of the levels are now interactive, which is there to keep you busy whilst you are fighting. You will be able to knock your opponent flying into the ocean to get them eaten by piranhas, or why not knock them off a skyscraper so they plummet to the ground and smash into pieces? You will find some stages handy to help you win the battle. Konquest mode is better than ever, with a much more in depth, detailed lengthy story this time with loads of challenges packed in there for you to do to win Koins. Chess Kombat and Puzzle Kombat are brand new to MK games and it is obviously all about strategy and is very fun when it is MK'd. Some great unlockables in the Krypt too as usual.
Despite having many great points, unfortunately there is a few let downs as well. In some ways it seems too similar to Deadly alliance, but thats only a minor problem. The more serious problems with this game is that the endings suck once again just like they did on Deadly Alliance, basically just still cartoon images, and you complete the whole game just for a naff ending like that. Whatever happened to the computer generated endings that actually moved?!(e.g. MK4) Also I found that when I created my own profile on the same memory card as another person, on my profile I started after this person and I found that the ones I hadn't unlocked in fact were unlocked, this was due to the fact he had done so...can't you start afresh at all? the only solution I had was to buy a new memory card.
Overall a decent game, its keeping me very busy and I love it, buy it now.

Best MK ever! Better than Armageddon by far!

this game is so friggen bloody. the konquest mode is real fun. you're this young kid ,shuginko, and you have to train with all the people that you hate and the ones that you like. you have to go to other realms to stop the dragon king which is the problem. what's cool in that mode is you get to kill anyone that stands in your way, even if they are not in your way! you age over time and become an old man from a young teen. the arcade is fun where you get to battle a lot of people. 2 player mode is where your friend or which in this case your enemy. the new chess kombat mode is cool where you are playing as chess people and whenever you want a space, you have to kill 'em for it! the puzzle kombat is etzactly like tetris. the fatalities are almost in any level in kombat mode, weather it's a spike dragging threw your stomach or sharks eating you at the beach your are still having fun. by the way for all you kids who cant play this game you have to convince your parents that it isn't bad. they don't cus at all except for "welcome to hell" which aint that bad. it only has a lot of blood and brutal violence.
