Very Unique Gaming experience

I just picked this game up yesterday and have just partly gotten into the game. So far, this is a very tightly programmed, visually stimulating offering from Westwood Studios and EA Games. You play as a young female pirate (Katerina) whose mother was a pirate long ago. You play in two different modes, one is like tomb raider, exploring islands for treasure and mystical items while running your sword through baddies. The other mode is the very well done ship battles where you pilot your pirate ship, blasting forts and other ships out of the water with your cannons and assortment of other special weapons. In additon to the main game, there is a great two-player option where you and a friend can sail around fighting each other's ships. The more ships you sink, the more powerful ships you can take over use. The voice acting is very professional and music is heroic. The cut scenes are very well done and don't interfere with the playing while giving you the backstory. Overall, this game offers a little bit of everything to the adventure gamer. It's not the best game ever made, but it's very entertaining and addictive (which is important). Like the Legacy of Kain and Final Fantasy titles, I've found it hard to put the game down because I can't wait to see what's around the corner or on the next island.

A must-own for Tomb Raider fans!!

I love everything about this game. The graphics are top-notch. You play a pirate named Katarina ("Kat") and you explore numerous lands, fight other pirates on your quest for treasure. I can't wait to get back to my Playstation to play it again!

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME

I bought this game thinking that the multiplayer portion would be cool. I also figured that, since its a playstation 2 game, it had to be good. I was horribly wrong. This game is the worst game that I have ever played, on computer or console game system. The multiplayer version is comprised of shooting at each other with boats. Thats it. The screens arent split, so if you are far away from your opponent, you are busy squinting at the screen trying to figure who is who...

Great Game

Westwood comes through with another great game. I bought this because westwoods comand and conqer games are so good. The graphics are really good. The game is sort of like Tomb Raider meets Zelda. There are very creative worlds to explore and tons of different things going on. It is not your basic 1st person shoter. I am sure most people would agree with me after they play it for a while.

Yar.. This Game Blows!!

Wow. How dumb and repetitive can a playstation 2 game be? This one really really blows. The controls in both ship and land modes are unpercise. The backrounds look good but the animation [stinks]. When your ships blows up, theres this explosion sequence where your character just stands on the ship's deck like nothings happening. Basically that sums up this game, "nothings happening".

Fun Game

If you like Tomb raider this game is for you. The worlds are massive and well designed. I bought this because Westwood's command and conquer games are so good. They didn't disappoint me with Pirates. The two player mode could be a little more in-depth, but otherwise this game is really solid. I would recommend this to anyone that want a good action/adventure game.

great 1 player game

When I first read about this game, I was really excited as i loved the old microprose Pirates. I was hoping for something similar. I was skiptical when I read some of the negative reviews for the game, but they kind of focused on the 2 player portion (which is lame). I'm glad I bought it. The graphics are ok nothing spectacular, but the play is fun. There are two modes, ship and captain. In ship mode you sail around fighting other ships, and attacking forts. There are multiple ships to buy (kind of wish you could capture ships you attack) and the bigger the ship the more power and strength it has. Gun fights are fun, and you definitely need strategy for the forts. (I like to turbo by them and blast them with the supershot). In captain mode, you are running around islands fighting pirates, crabs, skelitons, and who knows what else looking for treasure. The combat is pretty good, but not great. The camera is better than most, and fairly easy to control as you move around. I like how the game lets you have every item in the game, but limits you on how many. What I would add to make this a perfect game: Capture ships, cargo and guns. Be able to sell excess cargo. Better directional control when jumping. Be able to ignore the enemy ship explosions. Zoom view so you can plot attacks better. HOwever, the game is very addicting, easy to play, all in all a good purchase.

Very Disappointed

I always research any game before I buy. This one came recommended from numerous sources throughout the web and stores. I pick up the game and from the start it was slow paced and very unimaginative. The game lacks in every aspect. From graphics to storyline. I do not recommend this to anyone. Please save your money or donate it to a worhty cause.

A great adventure

I am a Tomb Raider fan, but my biggest complaint about the Tomb Raider games is that the puzzles seem near impossible to solve without the aid of a walk-thru. This game is very similar in look and feel to Tomb Raider, but you can focus your attention on having a great time meeting all of your mission objectives and exploring different islands and battling new enemies, rather than trying to figure out what order you should jump onto the blocks of a pyramid without falling to your death several hundred times. I think this game shows a newer trend in game design: how about making a list of objectives so that you know what you're supposed to do next? How about providing a map that you can access at any time, so that you know where you've been and where you need to go? Metal Gear Solid has a similar idea, but they bury mission objectives into hours upon hours (literally) of gabby and tedious cut scenes. There are cut scenes in this game, but it isn't overdone. The bottom line is, the game is just plain fun, pure and simple. And it is addicting. It's worth renting, and if you have a few gamers in your household, it's worth buying, because they will fight over who gets to play this game next.

I PICKED THIS GAME UP WITH NO PREKNOWELDGE OF IT.I AM NOT DISAPPOINTED- BEEN PLAYING IT ON&OFF FORTHE BETTER PART OF THREE WEEKS NOW.THANKS TOO VARIOUS INTERUPTIONS.IN MOST CASES I WHOULD HAVE LOST INTEREST IN A GAME OF THIS TYPE,BUT PIRATES KEEPS YOU COMING BACK FOR MORE TOO SEE WHERE THE WELL CRAFTED STORY WILL LEAD YOU. YOUR PRIMARY MISSION TOO FIND YOUR FATHER THE BARRON'S KILLER:ANOTHER PIRATE. ON THE WAY THE GAME SETS VARIOUS SUB- GOALS THAT CANNOT BE COMPLETED IN ORDER.IN MOST CASES I'VE COMPLETE SUB-GOALS THAT CAME QUITE AWAYS AFTER THE PREVIOUS.ONE EXAMPLE:ON THE STARTING ISLAND YOU FIND A CHEST."I NEED THE CRYSTAL KEY".THE KEY IS NO WHERE NEAR BY YOU MUST TRAVEL TOO THE LANDS OF FROST &FIGHT A VIKING FEMALE WORRIOR. THIS GOAL CAN'T BE COMPLETE UNTILE YOU FOUND MAPS TOO 3 OTHER LOCATIONS FIRST.SO YOU HAVETOO BACK TRACK.YOU'LL NOTICE A TANISH BLOSH ONTHE ISLANDS THAT HAVE A CRYSTAL OR SKELTON CHEST.THE MOST USE FULL ITEM FORTHE BIG BOSS I FIND IS THE VAMPIRE SKULL.BUT BEFORE YOU FIND THAT CHEST.RUNNING TO THE END OF A BOARD AND HURLLING POWDER CAGES ATTHE ENEMY WORKS WELL(LIKE WITH THE GIANT CRAB(too the water)).THE SEA BATTLES ARE REALLY COOL TOO AND UPGRADE YOUR SHIP CAN BE CHALLENGING IF YOU SPEND TOO MUCH ON OTHER THINGS.SO SAIL THE HIGH SEAS OF FUN:WITH THE LEGEND OF BLACK KAT.
