Psychonauts is one of those games that really should have broken out but just couldn't get it's chin over the bar. This has nothing to do with quality of gameplay or storyline, but rather because of a poor advertisement campaign due to the newly established developer's lack of resources.

Those of you reading this review don't know me from Adam, but I hope that won't stop you from taking my review seriously and giving the game a chance. I am a next generation game designer, meaning I am in college working on my Game Art and Design bachelors degree and have been an avid gamer for 19 years -- since the age of 4. This game, in my opinion, has one of the most unique storylines out of any game I've ever played, plus the controls are very smooth and most (if not all) of the glitches have been worked out further adding to the immersion factor (let's face it, who wants to play a game that glitches during the moment you need it to remain stable most of all - during a boss fight? That's about as fun as skiing up hill).

I don't want to give the storyline away for those of you interested in buying/renting/playing this game, so here is a brief review with minimal spoilers:

The game takes place for the most part in a summer camp for psychics. The main character, Raz, wants to become the greatest psychic of all. His powers are already impressive right from the get go and through careful training he begins to further harness his powers under that tutelage of the camp advisors (or psychic masters). Once he has reached his full potential, partially through the completion of optional mini quests, Raz must set out to save his friends, advisors, and even his enemy (the ugly bucktoothed kid who bullies him around during the first portion of the game) from a mad scientist in the insane asylum across the lake. Of course there is much more to the story than that, such as all the camper's brains being sucked out by the mysterious monster hiding in the lake and needing to be reclaimed for their donors. ;o) But I don't want to give it all away.

Have a little faith, take a little chance and play this game. You won't be disappointed. I promise.

This is a fun game to play but the one thing that REALLY got on my nerves was the 35 second load time. Every time you head towards a different part of camp you "load" and that takes forever. No other games I have played wasted time with constant loading. You can't have everything.

A great game wrapped in a brilliant story

Psychonauts is quite likely the best platform game ever released on any platform.

The game is smart, funny, challenging and overwhelming creative. There is even a level seemingly dedicated to the artistic stylings of Mark Ryden.

I've enjoyed platform games like Ratchet and Clank, Jax, and Katamari Damaci, but Psychonauts leaves them all in the dust.

This title gets my highest recommendation.

A Delightful Romp Into the Game Character Psyche

Psychonauts was a great game to play. With the PlayStation, I believe it was easier to control than it would be on a PC, and with that being said, it still took awhile to get used to them. The designs for the many students (and eventual mental patients) stood out with so many games coming out with more realisticly rendered characters, this was like a breath of freash air. Each foray into the different characters minds was incredible. The Black Velvotopia stands formost in my mind with its black light highlights and the Milkman Conspiracy second with the world being so topsy turvy you have no idea which direction is truly up or down. Anyone a fan of Invader Zim can appreciate the voicework of Richard Horvitz in the lead role of Raz but all the voicework was topnotch and the comedy easily rolled from the great cast of characters. I wholly recommend this game to anyone looking for a interesting twist on an adventure game.

It's the narrative, the art, the range of ideas

I am just an old patent attorney, and don't always know what the kids like, but I loved this! Extremely creative. Fun for anyone who wishes they had powers of pyrokinesis and teleportation. A platform-shooter-puzzle-scavenger hunt game that is not brutally hard, but hard enough!

really fun game

I've just recently gotten my PS2 (1-2 months) and this is the third game I've rented. This game is great and the levels are very different from all the other level. For instance, one level you get to go on a ginat monster rampage. But if you happen to stop by Fred's mind (one of my favorites) you get to engage in a battle of wits by going into a gameboard and recruiting soliders and stuff to win the game. And my god, some of the humor on this game is sooooo funny. There's quite a few collectables, and your phsycic moves are pretty good. But let me just tell you though, if you're looking for "super big and powerful weapons to beat the living crap out of people" game then I reccomend for you something like Rachet and Clank or Destroy All Humans, since the main tactic you'll most likely use is either invisibility and pyrokinesis or Shield and pyrokinesis considering the fact of low offense selection. But still, I reccomend this game, and I do want to tell you what the final level is(It's freaky, I'll give you that.), but I don't want to spoil the fun.

So Much Awesome!!

I love Psychonauts, because it's so different from everything else. Double Fine may be a small company, but they know how to use what they have. Yes this game doesn't have the fancy graphics of, say, Final Fantasy (which I also like) but it's got a great story, interesting characters, amazing design, fantastic worlds and more. I really love this game.

Didn't know quite what to expect when I purchased this game, but based on positive reviews I took a chance...and I'm so happy I did. Psychonauts is now one of my all time favorite games!! Each world was a pure pleasure to explore, the game was entertaining and sufficiently challenging, and I loved all the humor. I really hope that the game creators will soon give us a sequel.

Get a copy while you can; I've recently read that they are no longer printing copies of the game.
