Prettier, but not that great

Ive played most of the GTA series on a variety of platforms, Ps1, Ps2, Psp, and now Ps3. I have always enjoyed them for what they are, a way to get out some frustration. GTA 4 I have to say, while it may be pretty and has more freedom, isnt as much fun. Ive only played a couple hours into it, but I havent found much of any secret stuff. No hidden packages, no secret missions or rampages, and barely any guns and body armor. So if you die, you have to go buy everything back and that gets expensive. Driving has gotten harder. The e-brake doesnt let you slide, it makes you spin. If you take a corner above a crawl, you end up doing doughnuts down the sidewalk. So I started to use the normal brake, but quickley found that you cant turn while braking. There are many things that have been improved upon, but not enough to compensate for the major problems like driving.

So to summarize, its a cool game, but gets frustrating pretty quick.

Average, but Internet Play Redeems It

All the glowing praise aside, it's actually a pretty mediocre game. It's the same rat race we've seen before in all of the GTA3 games -- except this time the city is grey and ugly, and the cars handle like the streets are coated in butter. I got bored with the single player game after a few days of playing it.

Multiplayer redeems it though -- escort missions go from being boring as hell to actually kind of fun when you have a friend playing with you. And by 'playing' I mean 'shooting at you with a rocket launcher' or 'trying to ram your car into the Atlantic Ocean'. It's worth the purchase just for that. You get easily get a good 10 hours of enjoyment out of doing the online-only missions with buddies, and then even more time playing all the different online games with people on the internet.

The one thing that actually pissed me off about the game though is that Rockstar claims on the back of the box that it runs in 1080p. It doesn't. It runs in 640p. You can force it into 1080p mode by disabling lower resolutions on the PS3, but it doesn't actually look any better. False advertising.

Overall, the game's... good, but certainly not worth all the hype it's gotten.

a little more...of the same

yes there are a lot of good things about this game. Graphics are pretty good, enviroment exploration is almost to vaast, and the relationship building is pretty neat. Overall though, it is the same game as GTA2. Endless amounts of missions. Driving conditions and car handling is a little off the mark (after all it is a video game)I find that the city's are so cluttered with traffic, it makes it extreemly hard on some of the missions. (If you are on a mission and are trying to chase something down or get away on a motorcycle, don't hit ANYTHING. You will be thrown from the bike, fail in your chase, Die, or get arrested) Don't get me wrong. It's a fun game, and still has the f-bombs, killing, driving, smuggling drugs, and even the option to try your luck (with ususal success) with your girlfriend after taking her to play darts. The game becomes repetive after a while and I find myself getting bored with it, due to failing missions for stupid reasons. I have owned, beat and played all the others, (even psp) and while this one is bigger, with better graphics, I already find myself getting burnt out on it. All most to the point of geting cheat codes and just running around blowing stuff up. Decent game though. Some new fairly neat stuff. Graphics are great and the city, or should I say cities are huge(took me 30 min to drive all the way atround it, just cruising around) Playability seems infinate, Driving is difficult, story line is pretty good, oh and lots of radio stations. Enjoy.

Next Gen NOT...

The games OK. Flying at night is cool and it's that virtual world, but the multiplayer is lame, guns aren't very pronounced, shooting and driving aren't perfect in any way, it's not streamlined. It's like one big demolistion derby. A week or two to rent it and that's being nice. The lead character is a Bosnian refugee, why? No way this game is a 10. With all the things you can do in the game a 9 for some people for others a 8. Graphics aren't in the least Next Gen or is the gameplay. People thought San Andreas was great. I thought that was just OK. I guess these GTA honks don't get tired of punching anyone for no reaason or killing them without a thought. It's fun for about a day to do that. Seems like a rent to me. Going to a strip club to get a lap dance, maybe the little pimply kids buy it for that. I prefer the real McCoy. COD4 is a 10, this game? Psst, please!

Boring GAme

I highly recommend that people rent this game before buying. I honestly dont get why its rated so high. I was so bored while playing this. The controls are difficult and when you walk the screen always jumps to the wrong direction. Fighting multiple opponents is so awkward. I stopped playing it because i was so bored. I first had to pick up some girl and take her bowling. Then after that i had to take my cousin to a strip club where you have to fight multiple opponents. It wasn't fun at all. It also froze on me a couple of times and I had to try to restart the ps3.

I was amazed...I was so hyped up... And in an hour of playing it hype was worth it.

Gta 4 is like the other Gta games except for the controllers and better graphics. I only got this game a few hours ago. I was so anxious since I pre-order it. When you first crash your car or punch people in the face or stomach or go through the window of your car cause going too fast you are amazed. The graphics have never been what rockstar cares about. But the physics of everything rocks. I haven't use a gun yet but I have been shot at by the cops. Man, good stuff. The television shows rules as well. Well, of course the controls are weird at first. But you get use to them. If you love new york city you are going to love this game. I know i do. I was raised in Queens and see flushing meadows park as thrilling. Buy this game if you like NYC, buy if you like GTA, buy if you want to bang anyone in the face. Awesome.

I've played the GTA games since the top-down, 2D PC games from the mid 90's. Each game has fixed problems of the previous. GTAII made the biggest leap into the 3D realm. Vice City added activities, boating, flight, properties and business you could own. It was also the first to allow you inside the building interiors, in select buildings. San Andreas, my personal favorite, fixed the oil-and-water mixture your character had with water. That used to drive me crazy in VC...drowning. It also added a whole host of activities to do between missions. Dating was introduced, along with weightlifting (if you chose to do it) and character customization. There was really too much to do to list. From gambling to mountain bike races on a mountain, there was no lack of things to do when you were bored with missions...

GTA IV, not so much. Be sure, there are a wide host of improvements in this iteration. The graphics are MUCH improved. One of the biggest irritants in the GTA III trilogy (III, VC, and SA), the targeting system, has been fixed to satisfaction. You can now take cover and switch your aiming targets much easier. Yeah, it'll still lock-on to the occasional civillian during unfortunate moments, it's nowhere near as bad as the previous entries.

The Good:
Greatly improved graphics. The GPS is awesome for finding your way around the city and to your des. Lots of radio options, though the music is a bit more obscure than in past games. Typical GTA humor, notably the fun it picked at right-wing politics in the U.S. post-9-11. The targeting system is great, as is the hand to hand fighting. The physics system is actually somewhat realistic. You'll fly through your car's windshield in bad head-on collisions! I've also been killed by traffic while a pedestrian. Cell phone orgainization of your friends, mission contacts, and appointments is nice. Relationships with NPCs, dating, minigames like darts, bowling, pool, watching television, taking in shows, and getting drunk (more annoying than fun, surprisingly). The main Story is another great GTA story, making you want to complete missions to move it along. Using the police computer in police vehicles is a cool addition.

The Bad:
Just not as much to do to kill time. This game is more realistic in what you can do than past GTAs. Doing goofy stuff like tooling around in a jet pack, or jacking a train isn't an option. An example of the realism harming gameplay is motorbikes. In San Andreas, your skill on a bike improved, making accidents less severe (and nearly putting a stop to them when you were skilled enough). This made the 2 wheeler the ideal vehicle to whip around traffic, small and nimble. Bike accidents are pretty sever in GTA IV. T-bone a car in an intersection on a bike now is almost like a guaranteed death. While realistic and 'better' in a sense, it kind of hurt the motorcycle's practicality in GTA IV. I liked being able to play a couple of hands of blackjack between missions in Venturas. It's kind of hard to find weapons and armor lying around, but it's nice to have guns available at the dial of your phone. The relationships are fun, but become something of a chore over time, keeping everyone happy. The verticality of the city kind of has me put off where exploration is concerned. There's just too much to explore. The game is also MUCH easier. This is good and bad. You won't have nearly as many missions or car chases that have you wanting to chuck your controller. That's good. What's bad is where your 'find' missions like car thefts being dumbed down. I had fun trying to find the vehicles you had to steal. That made you explore, which was half the fun of GTA. Now, you don't have much incentive to explore. The replay value just isn't there for me.

Conclusion:

I still love this game. It hasn't sucked me in to 6 hour gaming sessions like the first three 3D games. The story is great and it has that familiar GTA feel. My hope is that this is like the GTAIII of the previous generation. My hope is that with each new title, they raise the bar as they did from III through San Andreas. Variety is the spice of life, and there just isn't as much variety in GTA IV.

Graphics: Slightly above average compared to other current-gen games(xbox360 and PS3) One of the biggest open world environments in videogames...they squeezed as much detail as they could into it, but there should be more(blu-ray coulda helped)(360 crippled it)
Gameplay: Great Fun....for a while. The combat system is about as deep as Tic-Tac-Toe, but hey that works for some people. If you've played a GTA game before you know what to expect.
Story: I'm not gonna give any spoilers....but it is well written(the VO work comes off as a bit corny, like previous GTAs). Expect the obligatory plot twist or two.
Replay Value: The multiplayer is the best part...Tons of cool modes to try out. (I would have liked to see some sort of Co-Op) There are better multi-player games out there though.(COD4)

After saying all that, I would still say it is one of the top 5 best games out for PS3...And it is a "must buy" for GTA fans :)

Not as good as I expected!!!

GTA4 is a really great game. The reason I gave it such a low review is because it really didn't meet my expectations for being on the brand new consoles. In my opinion san andreas was a way better game then gta4. The only thing that Gta4 has that san andreas doesnt, is better graphics and an online multiplayer. You could do way more things in san andreas that you cant do in GTA4. Still was a fun game though... just hopefully they come out with a better one than this!!!
