Fun in many respects, but lacking in others

I am a casual gamer who has played all the previous GTA games. I am not one who will likely complete 100% percent of the game. I have finally completed the main story line in addition to several side missions. Throughout the game I have found many things to like, and many things that could be improved or have been left out.

The story is the best out of all the GTA games. I enjoyed the outrageous characters and what they add to the game. The missions are fun for the most part(tedious in some respects). The graphics are great(not on par with COD4, but better then the previous games). Running on foot is much more interesting and manageable. The city is the most complex of any of the GTAs. All in all fun, but not game of the year material.

The things I miss and wish there were more of was store fronts. I was really hoping the buildings would be more accessible. Less emphasis was placed on customizing your character as well. No more hair cuts, tattoo's, working out or mastering particular weapons. The selection of clothes are dismal in my opinion. On to Cops, and oh boy, are there cops. Cops on every street corner and next to every vending machine (exaggerated, but not by much). While going through the game, I kept thinking the subtitle "Copland" should have been added to the title of the game. Which brings us to the wanted ratings. In many cases, one star felt like a two star and vice-versa. It wasn't a big problem, but slightly aggravating at times.

Now to the bit that irked me the most, cars. Where is the variety. What happen to customizing. I was really hoping that with each addition to the GTA universe, that there would be more cars and customizing options(down to engine components). I am really disappointed by the fact that Rockstar took away from the main attraction. Sure there are a couple of sweet rides, but nothing to go writing home about. (Infernus and Sultan RS, whoopdeedoo!!!!)

So as far as fun is concerned, it's entertaining. However, when giving it an overall rating after comparing it to past games and what was sort of expected in this release, I can't help but give it an average score.

Not San Andreas?!!? Good!

So many comparisons to other GTA's and all of them missing the point...This is not GTA Vice city, or San Andreas, it's new and much more realistic. Yes, the game is dark in spots, and holy crap, if you get indoors and someone comes up behind you and starts pummeling you it's hard to get around to hitting them back with the camera jerking everywhere, but the sheer detail, size, and interactivity are amazing. The game play is pure GTA, beating people down, dodging their punches and counter-punching, stalking into a street with shotgun drawn, cycling through targets and POW,POW,POW!!!! I love it!!! The vehicles are really true to life, steal an SUV and try to take a corner at top speed...over you go, just like real life. Steal a Banshee and away you go, burning rubber the whole way. This is not the cheesy jet packing, chainsaw in the street, gangsta' wannabe, f-bomb fest that was San Andreas, this is involved life with a conflicted protagonist and deep story that will pull you right in. I feel for our hero, I care if he succeeds, that's the difference. My first day I stole a motorcycle and cruised the town, like I was there, I followed the lights, cruised up and down, and beat up some old man, then I crossed the bridge in a stolen garbage truck and got a level 5 wanted level, I drove like a madman to get back to my safe house, with a helicoptwer firing at me, and a swarm of cop cars to plow through, it was awesome!! Let the 14 year olds whine because they can't customize their car, get a driving game if that's what you want, for me this is the heat! The best part for me is knowing that as good as this one is, the next will be even better. I like it!!

I liked this game when i first brought and played it but then i relized its just the same like the other gta games. All you do is run around do what you want carry weapons in your hand shoot people beat up people steal cars the police comes after you and you no the rest. The graphics is nice but that really don't matter its the game play that counts, you can fly a helicopter but the thing is the police just come after you when you fly one and you can't go in not much stores, exept bowling, pool, the bar, clothes store, and thats it. GTA is a really repetive game with the same stuff but different character to play as and different storymode but the rest is the same, so this game is getting boaring not much i really care about this game anymore.

Keeps you coming back for more

GTA IV is worth the hype in my book. It is similar to the other games in the series (not a bad thing), but the graphics are much improved and the acting/storyline are outstanding. The missions are fun, but if you get bored you can always grab a shotgun and raise hell at any moment. This game just feels big. I remember driving my car off the bridge into the water, crawling out the window, swimming around and just staring in awe at the night sky with the city glowing in the background. Just an all around amazing experience.

Great looking but glitched out!

WAY too many glitches to be worth it. I've never had an experience like this with a video game. For the longest time I couldn't get through to multiplayer. Then it started freezing up. If I try to stop the game it will restart the entire system. I loved the other games and the graphics are stunning and the physics are cool in this one. But wait until they fix the bugs before you purchase. What makes this thing so funny is that Take 2 interactive is trying to avoid being hostily taken over. They argue that they are worth more. I think instead of the game that saves them this might be the game that sinks them.

Grand Theft Auto IV - "genetically different, baby!"

When one thinks about GTA, things like expensive cars, beautiful women and huge open environments come to mind. So kids, I present to you the undisputed king of the sandox genre.

The story flows like a Marin Scorsese film. Our protagonist Niko Bellic is a fresh immigrant from a fictional country in East Europe. Bellic unlike other GTA protagonists is more likeable and has a conscience. He teams up with his taxi driving cousin Roman and enters the crime kingdom of Liberty City. I will not say anything more about the story because its in the best interest of the gamer. R* has made so many changes in gameplay. The biggest change is the introduction of the cell phone. With the cell phone, you can contact the people you meet, arrange dates, get help and do much more.

GTA IV features the best soundtrack and the best selection of radio stations of all the GTA games. The background score is perfect. I love the songs they choose while driving to a mission. I have heard people complain about the graphics but remember the city is more interactive than ever. Looking at the amount of detail in the game, the graphics can be given a break. PS3 version had better aliasing and better framerate compared to its 360 counterpart.

GTA IV also has the best combat system of all the GTA games. The cover/shooting gives a whole new dimension to the game. I was playing this game like Rainbow Six Vegas till I realized that it was GTA IV.

There have been known freezing issues but R* have a patch out as of today. The other thing that you can do is sign out of the PSN before starting the game and sign in when you want to play some multiplayer.

Multiplayer is amazing. I was playing this more than COD 4 and I was surprised the amount of detail in the multiplayer too. Overall this is a very good package for your $60 and it will satisfy every gamer out there. Also to all the fanboys out there trying to battle out on 'X' version being better, cut it.

Where Are Checkpoints?

I am about halfway through this game, and having logged 20 hours i can say that it suffers from serious flaws. As amazing as so much of it is, a single problem can detract so much. That problem is checkpoints. I'll go through a 25 minute long mission, and near the end of it i'll crash my car and it will explode. Can i restart from a checkpoint from about 5 minutes earlier? No. I restart all over again. Some mission i do over 5 or 6 times. Being able to beat halo 3 on legendary and call of duty 4 on veteran, i would say i am a very good gamer, and i never have had problems with games. but unless you want to spend way too much time repeating the same missions over and over, i would probably rent this. A great experience, but flawed.

More of the same

I'll give it 2 stars for great graphics and amazing acting, but nothing else is even worth bothering with.

You've seen every mission in the other GTA games, so what's the point? The only fun to be had with GTA4 is running over people, who now have ragdoll physics. In fact I'd recommend not even bothering with the main story, because you'll soon get 10 people calling you constantly wanting to go "hang out" and do boring stuff, and if you refuse, you'll lose like/respect points with them, so why even bother? It gets so boring so quickly - its back to Oblivion for me then.

Not what I expected at all

First, I like most of you waited in line at midnight anticipating what I hoped for was going to be the greatest game ever. After playing for 10 hours all I can say is good thing we had good weather.

I have been a fan of the series since the start. GTA 3 and Vice City are 2 of the best games ever made, period. I liked the concept of San Andreas but the game freezing all the time made that one suck. Since hearing about GTA 4 and watching the demo's I thought this was going to get me back in the series full force but I cant say I am pleased.

I am very happy to be playing another Grand Theft Auto game. The new features like the cell phone and email bring the game up to date. The negatives however make me want to take the game out and go right back to COD 4.

Negatives;

Graphics!!! I did buy my game for the PS3 but it feels like I am playing it on a PS2. Maybe since playing COD 4 for the past 3-4 months I thought gamers could make games with the same quality graphics but GTA 4 doesn't even come close. The people are definitely not next generation. Not even close to anyone's standard. The buildings are a nice fix but it seems like they are way too dark.

Shooting!!! It seems like it is the exact same as GTA 3. Couldn't they have just copied or paid someone that made COD 4 to help out in this game.

Driving!!! Come on, driving is the worst thing about the game. I thought for sure they would have done something to make driving better but again, just disappointment. The best thing they did for driving was make Roman give you your personnel taxi or just simply calling for a taxi and skipping the driving altogether. Plus, WTF is up with trying to chase someone and if you get hit just a little your car ALWAYS LANDS THE EXACT OPPOSITE WAY! Also, is it just me or does it seems like the cars seem to drive right in to you while you're driving?

People, like me, are going to buy this game no matter what solely based on being GTA alum. So no matter what we say they will just have to see it for themselves. For now I will just play it and hope for the best. Unfortunately I do see myself back in the COD 4 swing of things very soon.

Awesome Game!!

Wow is what came to mind when I first started playing this game today. The graphics are amazing. Sure, maybe not as good as some other PS3 titles but far superior to any previous GTA title. The realistic look from characters to car damage is amazing.

For owners of previous Liberty City titles, don't expect to see the same old town. This one has changed alot, for the good! It's confusing at first because you think you know where stuff/streets will be and they arent!
