Definitely NOT a next gen game!!!

Driving/fighting/shooting/running controls are sluggish and suck! Graphics are great, for a PS2 game. Radio is a waste of time and they should have had a c.d. player option to access the music on your hard drive... Should have had a 1st person view too! Couldn't connect at all with Online (neither could many friends) so I can't comment about the online function other than I CANT CONNECT!!! Frame rate gets choppy at times. Areas are too dark with no flashlight function. Camera angles suck! After playing Call Of Duty 4 this simply will not do... Now for the positives. Environment is huge and I positively want my money back...... Don't believe the hype! This game will sell a ton just like really crappy movies make money but it doesn't make it a quality product... I'm not a hater and after the hype I WANTED TO LOVE THIS GAME but I don't! Judge it for what it is and not what your being told it is!!! At this point in gaming I expect allot more..... Hopefully it will get me by till HAZE comes out!

Welcome to Liberty City

Niko is new to America. Brought by hopes and promises of his cousin Roman about how wealthy he is. Unfortunately for Niko he quickly finds the stories to be lies. Grand Theft Auto IV starts as others in the series with an anti-hero. Getting involved in doing the wrong things is all to easy in this game. From the very get go you are learning that living the American life can be difficult and in order to get your story going you must break the law. For the most part Niko doesn't have a problem with this since he has become raw after being a soldier in war.

GTA IV has probably one of the darkest stories so far in the series. This is not the type of game you will play and comment on how cheerful the story is. For those of you who have played previous GTA games you will notice many similarities. From the gameplay mechanics to the story line. Although people who are new to the GTA series will find how simple the learning curve really is in this game. The game gives you an incredible amount of tutorials and guides you thru your first several missions making things easy to understand. Most features in this game are simple to understand and keep this game from getting over anyones learning curve.

What has made the Grand Theft Auto series so superb is the story telling. Excellent voice acting with intense and exciting missions make GTA IV a true winner. From the first moment on you will notice that you aren't really playing a game as much as taking part in an intense crime drama. Think Sopranos from the former Soviet Union. The game is mission based and gives you the ability to choose what you want to do at any given point. You meet numerous characters who are all about committing crimes and they give you certain jobs. Of course these jobs increase your reputation and help progress you thru the story. Along the way you will find numerous characters. Some you will like and others you will probably want to get rid of yourself.

This game has further evolved ideas from previous GTA games. Niko can not only date one woman at a time but several. It's really up to you. Just remember how in real life this can be time consuming it can also be in a game. You will have woman calling and texting you if you ignore them to long. Then comes taking them out for dates. Each woman has different tastes and interests and it's up to you to know where to take them. Some of the activities can actually be fun like playing darts or pool as these mini games do have learning curves. The girl you are with will respond to your success or failure at these games. Obviously there are numerous other activities in wonderful Liberty City. Also it's important for Niko to accessorize and finding the best clothing to wear is important. Image is everything as as you progress you get access to better clothes. The car mechanics have improved in this game but don't expect to have similar handling to a racing game. What is cool to look at is the amazing detail they have put into the car damage. Every little ding makes an impact on the car you are in. Lastly is the music selection. An incredible 200 songs are available in Liberty City to listen to on the radio. Numerous radio stations including the talk ones belt out hit songs and comedic advertisements. Niko even has the ability to watch t.v. They covered every detail in this game and it shows.

As if a single player mode that will take you 30 to 40 hours to beat is not enough there is also online multiplayer. Yes you and 15 others can play on the beautiful streets of Liberty City. The multiplayer is truly open ended for your enjoyment. Several game modes plus the ability to create your own multiplayer. You can also invite seven friends to take on eight others. It's easy to say this game will be enjoyed for months on end.

It's easy to be impressed by Liberty City. It's as close to New York City as any game has ever got. From the pedestrians that make up the neighborhood to the realistic design of the buildings. The weather changes and the days progress realistically. This is one of those games where you can just take it in and enjoy the scenery. In Grand Theft Auto you have the freedom to do what you want. This game is intended for adults. The language and content can be mature most of the time. Although that is at a parents discretion. I wouldn't suggest this game for everyone. Although I would suggest it for those who have enjoyed previous Grand Theft Auto games. I would also suggest it for those who enjoy mafia or crime movies. This game will have you sitting back and enjoying the incredible story. Just don't forget that it's your story to play.

The best PS3 game so far!!! A truly real world experience!!!

Ok...First off I don't get where people are coming off saying that this game looks graphically like a PS2 game...I think everyone must be smoking something when saying that!! This game has unbelievable graphics!! It's going to be way better than a PS2 version anyways...Your talking about the PS3!!! I think it betters Uncharted and I'm glad I traded in Uncharted and Nascar 08 for this game as it only ended up costing me $16.00 :)

On the issue of the 360 having extra downloadable content and that being a better choice...I have no grudges against the 360 as I truly believe both systems are great systems. I just like playing all my old Playstation and PS2 games and didn't want to have to re buy another title just so I could play it again on the 360. Plus I like what I like and I love my Metal Gear, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy, and other titles on the Playstation. Everyone has to realize though...That the downloadable content is only the extra part of the game that couldn't fit on the HD DVD discs for the 360 in the first place!! They didn't have the space on the HD DVD's to put the full game on there so they had to split it up and you have to download the rest of the game of the net. That's why it was delayed sort of speak...because they had to do this for the 360. The Bluerays would have been able to fit it on there easily and then some. They still had more space on the Bluerays from what I hear so could you only imagine what could have been if they had used the full amount of the space? Because of Microsoft and the 360 they couldn't and had to do this to finish the game for the 360. This makes me even more excited for Metal Gear 4 as it's a PS3 only exclusive title and won't be ported over from a 360 game or anything. They will be using the full space on the Blueray discs and it's going to be amazing!!

The gameplay for GTA 4 is just simply mind blowing!! I love that you can do anything you want and I mean anything!! It's cool that you can get together for dates with one of the girls you meet at the beginning of the game. I went bowling once which was really cool and fun, went to a bar, and went to a burger restaurant. You then get to choose if you either want to just say bye or try your luck at the end of the night and see if you get lucky LOL The point is though that you actually develop reltationships with people and how you react or treat them affects you in the game. I had Roman calling me up and yelling at me once because I wan't answering his calls. Going across bridges when you come up to toll booths you can decide to actual pay the toll or try and outrun the police!! There's nothing you can't do in this game. I paid the toll 1 time and ran one the other. You can eat food, go out and play darts, buy new clothes, an do anything you want!! It's your own world. The missions have been great for me so far even though I have only played it for about 4 hours last night but I'm the type that likes to do a few missions to get money and the go out and free roam for a bit. I love the controls myself...after being use to a lot of racing games, the controls are no different for driving. They are almost like in Gran Turismo games...They are very realistic!!! Be careful not to ram a dump truck to hard or Niko will go flying out the window and die!! You have to be careful with your speeds. I just love how everything is so interactive...You can listen in on other person's conversations, when you honk the car horn everyone reacts a different way, some people get out of their cars and come after you if you hit them or something, the car damage is so realistic, the turn from day to night and to morning is purely a great spectacle in itself. The sound is awesome as well. I like the GTA games but I usually don't like them that much and just like messing around but I really like this one...It's very addictive and you really can't put the controller down!! It's like Rockstar says about the Niko...Niko is a very likeable character...one you can grow with and one where you just want to go have a beer with. He is just such a likeable character in Grand Theft Auto 4.

If you love the Grand Theft Auto series this is a must have because everything is just truly brilliant!! The graphics are amazing...Far superior than the PS2 of course so I don't see how people are bashing the graphics on the game. Besides, if they put more detail into it, you then have issues with framerates and the smoothness of the game. So take it like it is...The graphics are truly awesome!! Gameplay, sound, the storyline, the missions, and the interactiveness is just awesome all around. This is a must have for any GTA fan and highly recommended!! I can't wait for Metal Gear Solid 4 in June, another game of the year contender but this is the best game so far. You'll be truly amazed!!!

Rockstar has done it again! Girlfriend number 4 has left me!!!

Just when I thought there could never be another game from the GTA series that would make me neglect my girlfriend and susbsequently lose her... YEP.. it's back! So goodbye girlfriend number 4!!! LOL. And helloooo Grand Theft Auto IV! It is absolutely the best game in the world!!!! I don't know how these people at Rockstar do this, but they have included everything you could ever want in a single video game! I mean, come on, what other game has a massive massive MASSIVE area to explore and interact with?.. to such an extent where you could actually be forgiven for forgetting about the actual plot and missions in the game! Put aside all the usual fantastic game play we have all got use to in GTA, and just get your head around the fact that you no longer just have radio stations to listen to during game play, you can also watch TV stations! Oh and that is not all, if you come across a computer within the game... wait for it... YOU CAN SERF THE NET!!!!????? I mean, I can't take this anymore, GTA has now officially taken over my life! Goodbye world and don't disturb me for at least a year coz I am fully hooked on GTA IV! :)

Plenty Of Replay Value

I see many reviews crying about graphics and next gen blah blah blah. Eye candy does not make a game fun! It just makes the game look more visually
appealing. Many gamers love the graphics for Assasin Creed but then they tell you how boring the game gets after a few hrs of game play.

Fun games with high replay value will always be a priority over graphics regardless of what console you game on. As far as Call Of Duty 4 word is the graphics are great but the game is too short and the online multi player is useless because it's loaded with glitchers. ( cheaters )

They use an invincibility glitch to win games because they have no skills. Where is the fun in that ?

----

Let me get back to GTA 4 for the PS3. Replay value, tons to do, huge
playground and lots of variety to keep you busy. This game is like nothing else out there. The freedom to basically do whatever you want when you want within the city is just plain cool.

Gamers whom find this game boring is because they lack imagination. Free roaming games require you to be more involved then just point, shoot and hide. There are tons of war games out there but none which can pull off the GTA 4`experience.

GTA 4 is like 5 games in one! You can race online with cars and motorcycles while earining money, team up with your buddies and jump in a car to go do a drive by on your opponents ( team death match ), play pool within the game, go bowling, play darts and so much more!

I personally think the graphics are great. I have my PS3 hooked up to HDMI 1080i. I don't really care about graphics as long as the game play is fun. Nobody ever buys a game for graphics only, we all buy it because we want a good game that is fun to play.

Favorite part of the game so far is jacking the police cars from the department lot and going for a joy ride in rich areas to jack people for money after pulling them over.

Calling 911 on your cell phone is crazy too. You can call for police, paramedics or the fire department at any time from any location. Call them after you start a fight and jack their car! :-)

Besides that you can also call all your contacts and arrange dates, favors and jobs. This game is tight! You can even change the ringing style for your cell phone or shut it off completely and just drive around exploring the city.

There is so much to do! This is a great game I would recommend it to anybody who want's something different from the usual war type games.

I gave it 4 stars because the graphics are kinda dark and I have had some minor freezing issues. I'm not sure if that is a PS3 issue or a disc issue but I simply restart my PS3 and have no issues afterwards.

Enjoy!

Yes that's correct, this game is nuts! Rockstar has officially outdone themselves and unequivocally created the most immersive gaming world I have ever played in. There's just so much detail on every street, shop, lamp post .... that none of the graphics for the shop fronts are ever repeated. You'll see a different looking shop everytime. All motion capturing and speech animations are top notch. Voice acting is also very well done.

Gameplay wise, those who have played the series before, will feel right at home. You do missions, work your way up. However, the new element of dating and some mini games have been added to the mix.As usual, it is impossible to drive the cars at high speed. You will not be able to turn at such speeds, all efforts to do so will almost certainly resulting in crashing.

The craziest thing about this game is definitely the soundtrack. From the opening theme song by michael hunter, I was hooked. Everytime I listen to that I cant help bobbing my head up and down with the beat, just an amazing tune.

Multiplayer is heapsa fun, especially cops and crooks and team deathmatch. Though I do have to concede that the multiplayer's biggest let down is also it's biggest draw card, that being able to roam the WHOLE city. Sounds cool at first, but too many a time you'll find yourself spawning somewhere, only later to realise that everyone is at a different part of the map and hence a long drive to the action ensues. It's great, but it just deteriorates the pace and excitement of multiplayer.

Though I do not believe there is a 'perfect' game, GTA 4 comes effing close. It is an absolute spectacle and Rockstar has produced perhaps the most polished game of all time in all departments!

Even with glitches...

First off, no game is perfect. I don't care how good of a system you claim to have, there is going to be frame rate issues, and sometimes more serious problems.

This game is no exception. The first 15 hours of game play is nothing but smooth sailing. The graphics are a little better than before, and have a deep contrast than the X-Box version. When you first start out you have absolutely no weapons to wield. You can disarm one of the thugs that attacks Roman who has a knife (simple move).

Stealing cars has to be one of the funnest things I've done in this game, aside from bowling with whomever the lady of the hour is. The only thing I don't like is that the cops pretty much don't bother you unless you ram them, or they see you stealing a car. But then again, that's pretty much at the start.

Now, the bad side to this. There are glitches. Interesting ones, like disappearing into your fridge is really a beautiful glitch, and locking up the PS3 (60gig) is also bad. The fix is to reinstall the data though. Anyway, this is a good game that has a few bugs in it. Enjoy it none the less.

Very good game if you are a GTA fan

Rockstar is back with GTA 4. I got this game on its release ordered through this site. So get it through here and you should get good shipping service depending on which option you choose. Anyways this game looks so much better than its coutnerparts. It doesn't look cartooney at all like GTA: SA. This game looks very realistic, so much that you will think you are there if you get too into the game. I am playing on a SD Tv and can't wait to play it on a HD TV with HDMI cables. The game physics have been improved too. There are good things and bad things that accompany this improvement. The good is that cars handle more realisticly. When turing at high rate of speed the cars body moves on the frame like a real car would. Car damage is very detaled here too. The bad part is if you get hit while on a motorcyle bye bye to that mission you have been working on if you fly too high into the air. There are lots of missions too. It has been reported there is 40-50 hours of gameplay is you just do all the mission and no free roam. If you get this game be ready to play for a few weeks maybe finish in a month if you are like me and want to take your time. Overall score give 5 out of 5 stars.

BOLD DIRECTION; major problems

I'm a grand theft auto veteran. I've been around since GTA III first came out on the PS2 back in 2001 and have watched the series evolve slowly but surely.

Having beaten GTA IV I would say that San Andreas was the series' zenith.

GTAIV tries to head in a more cinematic direction (similar to The Getaway series, if you've ever played that). During the first one-third of the game, it succeeds. But the cohesion of the story gradually unwinds....the charecters and their struggles aren't really as developed or belivable after a certain point (though first third was brilliant, with Russian gangster Vlad, or the tension between Playboy X/Dwayne).

Example: you spend the whole game looking for some guy you've never met. While I won't spoil the conclusion, I thought it was hard to get attached to the story line, given that many of the final events seem to be random (in otherwords, the story is not well developed, especially during the final 25% of the game...new charecters appear out of no where, and some of the missions began to feel meaningless)

GAME ITSELF: Here is where it gets incredibly disappointing. Airplanes? Gone. Jet-pack? Gone. Lots of weapons and codes from San Andreas? Gone. You can't even buy properties, swim underwater, parachute, or fix up cars anymore! These were key GTA features! All that is left is only a somewhat better story-line that takes itself too seriously and has REMOVED ALL FUN FACTORS.

Still a good buy, but if you loved San Andreas as well as all the other features GTA has been known for, then you're in for a bit of a disappointment.

Seriously Disappointed GTA fan

I've been waiting for this game to come out since I beat San Andreas the third time so I tried really hard to like this game but now that I've beat it I have no desire what-so-ever to play it every again. The missions are repetitive and long. Too many of them consist of: take vehicle, drive to point a, follow person through scripted traffic to unmarked point b, kill person. It would be fine if I could actually kill them, but no amount of bullets will bring the mission to an end early, leading to pointless busy work. There is a limited number of safe houses, and no properties to buy like in Vice City and San Andreas. The map is large but you the number of cars you can safe is severely limited by this. Many of the past side quests that resulted in unlocking weapons give you none. Dying and visiting the hospital is insanely expensive making random rampages painful. If I wasn't a collector, I would sell this thing. I cannot in good conscious suggest this game to anyone but a GTA completist.
