Almost Heaven

This is definately one of the best PS3 has to offer. The graphics, style and presentation are unmatched on any platform. The acting (in cutscenes)is the absolute best I've ever seen in any videogame. Characters are believable and surprisingly not over-the-top, like we normally expect in a videogame.

At first I worried that it'd be a hack-slash-repeat affair, but the game changes the rules and settings perfectly in order to keep the gameplay exciting throughout the whole game. Another really cool feature is using SIXAXIS to control projectiles in flight. While it's possible to use the analog stick to do so, I highly recommend you take 5-10 minutes to learn to use motion control. Once you know how to do it, it's a lot of fun.

So why not 5 stars? People already said it: too short. Normally I'd say it's a non-issue. (People seem to forget that Metal Gear Solid 3 can be completed in 5 hours, it was actually a requirement for one of the game's difficulty modes). But in case of Heavenly Sword, there's absolutely nothing else to do when the game is finished. Yeah, sure "Hell Mode", but really...

Overall, this is an outstanding first effort from a new developer. Expect a sequel and expect it to be one of the best games of all time.

Demo shows promise

This game hasn't been released yet! However, the demo that's availiable for free from the playstation store is amazing. The controls are vey tight and the graphics are a sight to behold. The demo is only about 10 mins long depending on how qudkly you can pick up the controls. Lots of fun combos do make this game a lot of fun. I recently bought a HDTV and the colors and graphics really reach out and grab you on it. I'm very excited about this game. The actual release should be this September.

The most amazing cinematic experience you can play

Without a doubt this is the best next generation game thus far. I would go as far as to say its the first game I've played that really makes me see a break between glorified PS2 games like Gears of War or resistance and the new generation of cinematic quality games. The score, the art direction, the acting, the setting...everything is top notch on par with a AAA quality movie production like Transformers or 300. It is very clear that an immense ammount of effort and care was put into making this amazing game.

Some will complain that the base game is between 7 and 10 hours. This is true but really, most 20+ hour games (such as Metroid Prime 3) are less then 4-5 hours of truely interesting gameplay such as intense fire fights or bosses. Most of the 20+ hours is spent walking around, back tracking and looking for small pick ups to give you 5 more missles or a few new unlockables. For the entire 7+ hours Heavenly sword goes it is amazing start to finish. There is no real break in the action when you're playing and the CG cinematics are the most amazing in any game to date. Theres small scale engagements with powerful foes, dramatic boss battles that are legitimately challenging (especially on the unlockable "hell" level of difficulty), huge 1 hero vs 800 enemies melees and even sniper missions with a 2nd dramaticly different character. There are also performance ratings between 1 and 3 "glyphs" for each of the dozens of scenes that make up the levels and these glyphs unlock new combos, content and other things to give an incentive to play scenes over to do better adding greatly to the replay value (not to mention the harder "hell" level).

I cannot recomend this game highly enough and please don't believe all those who complain about the length or other small aspects. This game is the best 6-8 hours in next gen gaming and the first game to really take advantage of the PS3. Beyond the first 8 hours theres another 20 there to get unlockables, master the controls and beat it on a harder difficulty. If you do the math take the 3 best movies from last year at 20 dollars each and this game costs the same and is more fun to boot since you're actually playing the best fantasy movie ever made. Its what those (also good) lord of the rings action games for the PS2 should have been.

I bought this review after reading some reviews and watching commercials and videos of the game. The cut scenes look really good with the exception that there is no blood. Not trying to be gory...but when someone gets shot with an arrow and they zoom in to that character...the absence of blood makes the whole thing look incomplete. That being said...the main bad guy (King Bohan) is the most impressive villain I've seen in any game. His dialogue, his demeanor and gestures...couldn't be better. That is my favorite part of the game.

The game is really short and the action is basically mashing the square and triangle buttons hoping that you nailed a combo. There are way to many combos to memorize...and by the time you get the hang of it...the game is over...Probably close to 35 if not more combos.

The sixaxis controller part was frustrating at first...but once I got the hang of it...it was actually one of the more enjoyable parts of the game.

Wait for it to be in the bargain bin before buying it...or rent it for a couple of days...that should be enough time to play through it twice.

Freakin awesome..

EXCELLENT GAME!!

Graphics, Story line, Gameplay... EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT AND.. EXCELLENT!!

i heard the game was short... i'm 5 hours into the game and it seems like i'm towards the end of it. And... is one of the reason's why i'm giving it a 4 out of 5. (just added: I just finished the game... 6 hours total.)

other reasons: Few audio bugs in some cut scenes, minor graphic bugs from time to time... and the loading time is long.

Regardless of the minor problems, it's an excellent game and it's worth the 60 bucks, even if it is a short game.

MUST BUY!!!!

Nothing else like it

I cant really say nothing to explain the level of complexity, graphics, awsome acting and masterfull orchestra music and sound effects that lie in this little blueish disk. If you've loved the God of War saga as any sane person on this planet who owns a ps2 (or 3 now) then this is a must have. Although God of War and God of War II are 6/5 stars, Heavenly Sword is a 5/5 no doubt about it !! Must have ps3 exclusive for any ps3 owner. Get it now!!!

A game that has flaws, but demands respect.

Heavenly Sword at the beginning garnished a lot of press being that it is another carbon copy of the PS2 modern classic God of War. While some points of the game do take some cues from God of War, it is a totally different game.

The presentation of this game proves that games have moved into the next realm, just like Metal Gear Solid 2 did for PS2. It is very impressive and after playing through many games in my time i must say the CG is without a doubt the most realistic i have ever seen, but theres more to the CG than just realistic character models, its the story.

Many people went on and on about how short it is but i ask you this..just because a game is not 20 hours the first time you play it why does it have to have negative press. Not that long ago, the only games that were 20+ hours were role playing games and it was unheard of to have a 20+ hour action game because it would of gotten repetative after the 12th hour. Heavenly Sword avoids this by scaling the game down to a smaller finishing time but makes the 6-8 hr campaign a very imaginative and memorable one.

The characters come to life in this game more than many 20+ hour games that i can think of. The action while is inventive however is not like God of War as far as all out slaughter fest. Unless you block, unless you counter, unless you carefully pick your openings and attack the enemies you face you will get owned. Unlike God of War you just don't button mash, but you actually look into your inventory to find and practice combo's that will help you defeat many of the enemies and bosses throughout the game.

All in all, this was a very ambitious effort on the behalf of Ninja Theory and you can tell they put their hearts and Soul into it. Now if you are like me and only own a PS3 and not an X-box 360 don't think you have to buy this game to show off to your friends or that you have an obligation to Sony to help make the system successful. I chose to buy a PS3, and although i am jealous that x-box gets such exclusive titels like bioshock and mass effect and Gears of War to name a few, i am content because the care that went into this game makes me proud to play and enjoy it. If you are the type that has both systems than maybe plucking 60 bucks on a game with 6-8 hrs of gameplay is not your style and you would rather get a first person shooter with online play and more bang for your buck than you may just want to rent it, or borrow it from a friend but whatever your fancy is you need to play this game to appreciate the blood, sweat, and tears that went to create this great story and presentation.

I chose to buy this game to play a good game with much production value, and to support a developer that put in a lot of work to make it happen. If the dollars are tight than you may decide to skip it, but in the end the choice is up to you....and i am very happy with my choice.

This is the first game I really took the time to play on my PS3. I have to admit Im not a gamer..i bought my 60gig PS3 for the blu-ray and the web browsing but thought Id give Heavenly Sword a try. All I can say is, WOW! This game is amazing...the graphics, the music..its almost like being in a movie. It also makes full use of the six axis controller and I have to say my favorite parts were playing Kai's character shooting the arrows and also Nariko destroying the catapults with the cannons... i especially liked how you could shoot the enemies in different parts of the body and they react accordingly....you could shoot them on the leg or [...] and theyd jump up and down in pain...or you could shoot them on the head and they die instantly...
I know a lot of people say this game is too short but no way was I able to finish it in 6 hours...i guess you can do that if your goal is to barge through the game without really enjoying it? plus theres a hell mode which i can only imagine is really difficult since normal mode is already difficult enough.
This game is really awesome...AAA...you should get it, you wont be disappointed.

A ton of fun with high production value

I never intended to buy Heavenly Sword based on its mediocre reviews on many gaming sites, but ended up getting it as a gift. Before that, I had downloaded and beat the demo a few times.

And then I played the game in all its glory in 1080p with my brand new HDMI cable. The visuals are absolutely stunning, and the high production value is immediately apparent. If a launch title can look this good, then the future of the PS3 looks very promising. More often than not, I found myself hanging around after clearing an area just to admire the beautiful environments.

The gameplay consists of primarily 2 modes - hack/slash 3rd person (like god of war) and use of the sixaxis to steer ammunition toward targets. The latter is the best application of the sixaxis I've ever seen, and I had a blast driving arrows into enemies and watching them react according to the arrows' entry points.

The story is not all that deep, but has enough substance to make you care for the characters, and even sympathize with some of the enemies. By the middle of the game, I was so engrossed with the plot I couldn't stop playing.

I had as much fun playing Heavenly Sword as I did God of War (I and II), and to those who have played any of the God of War games, that's saying a lot. Heavenly Sword is a work of art, and I'm glad I own it.
