Superb!

One of the best PsP games yet. An original storyline, gameplay mechanic and graphic engine, are some of best qualities of this game.
As Fred, you need to rip the heads of your enemys after beating the crap out of them, also collect different kinds of head that grant you abilities like flying, breathing underwater, storing water, and so on.
The game runs smooth with no slow frame rates, the music flows fine and helps a lot to catch the game's feeling.
It also gives you the feeling of being inside of a Tim Burton's movie, the scenaries are creepy and dark, and so is the humor.
Superb voice acting, you can really feel and trust what the characters are trying to express when they talk.
A must-have for PsP users... supporting this kind of masterpiece allows developers to put their imagination at work and bring great titles like this one to the PsP.

This certainly gets the most original game idea for me this year. The game could have gotten complicated with all of the head switching to activate different powers that you need for different tasks if not for the in game tutorial you are given along the way. I did have some problem with navigation and was slightly confused in some dark areas, but overall the game is fun. The humor is dark and quirky which works well with this game. This is certainly a winner for the psp.

You know, we need more games like this on the Playstation Portable. Games with more creativity. Too often, we see the same ol' run of your average game that's okay to play on the PSP but nothing never turly entertaining. In Dead Head Fred, you play as Detective Fred Neuman who starts his adventure after getting himself killed by a local mob boss. Brought back to life by Dr. Steiner, Fred finds himself missing his memory and his head. As Dead Head Fred, it's up to you to uncover the mystery behind his death, save the city, and be the hero by the end of the game. Oh, and lop off a few heads in the meantime, lol. Over the course of the game, Fred will come to own a collection of no less than eight different heads, not counting the bell jar he starts the game with. Fred can swap out heads on the fly, giving him access to a variety of different powers and abilities. Trust me, it's alot more entertaining than it sounds. When you first start playing, the game seems more like an Action/Platform game of sorts but it turns into much much more. The controls are dead-on, gameplay is simple yet complex enough to keep things fresh in the game for you. Graphics look pretty good for a PSP game, although nothing truly spectacular.

The game is perfect to play in short bursts but, if you play for long periods of time, look for it to become a little repetitive. It's never repetitive enough to mar the game, though. That's about all I could find wrong with the game.

Dead Head Fred has the makings to be a sleeper hit on the PSP but will probably see the same fate most games of this sort do(take, for example, Beyond Good and Evil or Psychonauts). It will fall under the radar & never see a sequel. I hope and pray I'm wrong. Dead Head Fred is a delightful change of pace that's creative & fun and deserving of a sequel. Lesser creative games(like Death Jr., I'm afraid) have seen sequels, why not Dead Head Fred?? In my opinion, it is money well spent.

At any rate, let me recommend this game. It's a hoot to play and is downright hilarious at the end.

Awesome fred

Some times it is hard to understand how fantastic games never get noticed. Probably one of the most intriguing console games out in the market. This is not a vannila FPS/TPS shooter or action game. More of a adventure game with action. Very creative story, addictive game play. Very well executed with good production values. Prefect balance of audio, graphics and game play.

The best game nobody bought...ever.

I bought this game looking for an original game that was exclusively for the psp. I picked this one up very shortly after it was released, being very impressed with the videos I saw of it. Unbelievable.

This game captivated me immediately with it's brilliant script and, in my opinion, amazing looking graphics and sound. Art direction is inspired, looking almost like a "Mark Ryden" style. The gameplay, while some say repetitive, I loved the most. Controls are very responsive and has plenty of variety with its head-changing abilities. Great animation, varying on which head you use. It also has some of the best voice acting I've heard in a game, even though the story isn't meant to be very serious. Also, this is a BIG game. It's amazing how much there is to do, and how many secrets there are in the game. Truly expansive.

The only slightly annoying thing I found were the very frequent load times, and load in for some of the dialogue animations (sometimes they speak after they're lips already stop moving). That's the only problem I really saw.

Great game for all psp owners, and very tragic that it's so overlooked. Here's to hoping for a sequel in the future, but I'm not holding my breath for it. For this price, it's a steal!

I now rate it 4 after talking to vendor

I'm at the garage in the early part of the game. I have read every walk through and help I can find so I know I've done everything right and after performing the required task the game just sits there!
The task is suppose to open a gate, it doesn't, and I can go no further in the game. Don't know if it's a defect or what. But what a waste of money!

Update: Apparently the vendor has had an issue with this part in the game in that it isn't intuitive to the rest of the game as to what you do. If you simply use the triangle button to go into "interactive" mode it works. So I will update my grade to a 4 star.

What a great game. I'm so glad to see that a highly creative game made it to the PSP. If you enjoy crude humor and "oddness" then this game is for you. You play as Fred, a murdered private detective who literally loses his head to the town boss. Luckily, the town scientist is able to save Fred's body and brain and sort of put him back together. Fred's mission is to recover his head and exact revenge on the man who took it. It's basically a 3rd person action game. Fred throws punches and kicks, jumps around, and can use powerful moves if he's got enough "juice" and/or the right head (his heads are interchangeable). The graphics look very nice. The load times aren't too bad. Voice acting is really good, but be prepared for some "F" bombs here and there. Sometimes the camera view is a little annoying, but that's a minor issue. There are a lot of button presses you have to learn in order to master the combat system, but once you learn them it becomes second nature. You gotta pick this one up.

I'm not the best gamer, but I enjoyed this game. The storyline is unique and interesting but some of the navigation is a bit tricky. Overall I am very happy with my purchase

I have to say that "Dead Head Fred" is one of the funnest and funniest games I have played in a while. The story is solid and doesn't take itself too seriously.

Fred's voice acting is done by John McGinley ( Dr. Cox from Scrubs ),
and they make use of his ability to be sarcastic and his delivery of
swearing seems very natural ( there is a fair amount, but to good
effect ). At points the humor is a bit sophomoric, but still funny.

The controls and graphics are both well done, and you can tell this was written for the PSP. It is a shame this didn't sell better, but I think the M rating hurt the sales.

Love that Fred!

I've played lots of games on the psp--including God of War, Crash of the Titans, and Daxter--but Dead Head Fred is still my favorite!

There are mini games galore, a great story line, loads of places to go items to find and creepies to kill.

This is great adventure game, and it takes awhile to finish. If you get stuck there are some wonderful walkthroughs online. It's a game I like to replay; and since I usually sell them after I finish playing them once, That's saying a lot!
