Good - not as good as 1 and 2 though...

There's something missing from Silent Hill 3. Silent Hill 1 was ground breaking for it's time and a great game. Silent Hill 2 took things further with better graphics, it made the PS2 look like a very powerful console. Silent Hill 3 is the weakest of the 3 games. It's by no means bad, it simply fails to impress as much as the other 2. Silent Hill 3 the intro is not so hot, the box art work isn't so hot either, once in the game it all feels very bity and un thought about.

From what I have seen of Silent Hill 4, I sense that Konami will be back on track.

Intense

Me being the avid horror fan I am, I had to pick up this installment of the Silent Hill series (Have the other two, and absolutely love them). The gameplay is some what similar, but the story is the absolute best of the series. It feels kinda like The Wickerman with the whole religious cult thing. This is the best horror game ever outside of Resident Evil 2. Highly reccomended, whether you're a horror fan or a hardcore gamer.

The best!

I purchased the first Silent Hill because it was cheap and i wanted somthing new to play. I took it home and I found myself in a foggy world with monsters trying to kill me. That game scared the crap out of me! Then I purchased SH2 and It wasn't as scary as the first.. But it was a much better game story wise, and it kept me going in the game. (despite me getting lost half way through and taking me weeks to find my way out!) Then SH3 came out and again I bought it because it was a good price. At first I didn't think it would be that great, but when i took it home and popped it in... my jaw hit the floor! It was by far the most exciting,scariest, and most disturbing game I've ever played. The story was a little confusing on my first play through, but my second play through i pieced it all together. The character was an awesome choice for Konami to use, and the bonus soundtrack you recieved was great for halloween! The game was long, but it never made you want to quit playing (despite the back tracking) The opening scene gets you ready for what youd face in the rest of the game.. which i liked a lot. The amusment park was very disturbing when youa ctually looked at the scenery. The mall was a cool location, but i must say that the boss sucked! The other scenes you went through were chilling, especially the alternate hospital area. When you walk into the one room and recieve the phone call from Vincent.....his voice was scary enough (although the scene was comical) of all the scenes in SH3 the Church scene overtakes them all. For the first time in playing the series i found my self not wanting to go forward when i heard monsters noise. In my opinion the church scene alone is worth the price of the game. The set backs in this game i would have to say are the camera angles although you can move the camera rather well.. and the bosses. the bosses were just wierd and not scary or even hard for that matter. The puzzles in this game were awesome. They were not that hard.. not to easy and very intersting. Overall this was the best horror game I have ever played, and im quite convinced that it is the best i will ever.Konami out did them selves.

Not the same

The third installment to the Silent Hill series has caused mixed feelings in fans around the world, most of which have made positive remarks. I stand to differ. Although this Silent Hill is great in its own rite, it is incomparable with the first two and, with me at least, has brought much disappointment.

The first game was a major success because it was revolutionary and terrified video game players when everyone thought Resident Evil was as terrifying as it could get. The second game was greater because we knew what to expect and wanted to return to Silent Hill to see what horrors it would deliver and what fears it could conjure up this time. But the third game....yes, this one; it meets with some disappointment because this time, the players don't visit Silent Hill until the very end and don't explore the town once they finally get there.

Put me back in that town that mortified me the first two times. Let me be witness to some strange, awful looking creatures emerging from the thick fog. Let me feel that overwhelming sense of desolation and loneliness. I don't want it all to change. It was good the first time; it worked the first time; it scared you the first time. The first two games were not about fighting bigger, more furious creatures; they were all about atmosphere. You could not help feeling like the further you walked down a deserted street, the closer you were coming upon some nameless, unknown peril. I did not feel anything like that when playing this game. I simply felt that, "Okay, when I open this next door, be ready to run into some corner and make some distance for myself and shoot and kill." That was as far as the fear went. Silent Hill, the actual TOWN, has built itself up a solid reputation of being an extremely evil place which can reach right down into the very core of your soul and pull out any of your personal, hidden fears and give to them life. The name Silent Hill alone conjures up old feelings of being enveloped by a nameless, formless evil. So sure, new and bigger creatures are fine to add, but they are scarier if we know where they come from, not just throwing them at us. It's about ATMOSPHERE, not bigger and stranger creatures, and the town Silent Hill is by far the most horrifying atmospheric place that has ever been introduced in a video game.

So, why did you take it away?

I hope with this next installment, Silent Hill 5, the producers will do everyone a favor and put us BACK to the place which won them worldwide attention and made them rich.

Other than the fact you see little to no Silent Hill in this Silent Hill game...gameplay is still highly anticipating. You still have the radio and it is still very dark and a flashlight is required to see. The new monsters are stranger than before and the music score was excellent. And a lot in this one gets explained.

great game in a great series.

ritual abuse, guilt, greif, loss, pesona, morality, theology, fear lurking in the commonplace just beyond our senses, these are some of the issues that have come up in the silent hill series... it's obvious to me that video games are growing up... when you can tackle issues like dealing with the loss of a terminally ill loved one with a straight face in a game... wow... these games are creepy, surreal, and really produce a sensation thats pretty rare in any medium and thats some jump-up-in-your-seat fear. there are times when it's like watching a car wreck... you feel like it's a little to scarry but you want to find out what happens next... buckets and buckets of blood. but beyond that silent hill was first celebrated as a "cinematic" game and while some people are critical of the gameplay (it's essentially an old school adventure game where you solve puzzles to get to the next part of the story.) if you give them a chance they are very immersive. the people behind silent hill didn't leave it devoid of story, and even beyond story theres allegory and metaphor... theres some depth beyond killing and gore. certainly not for everyone...

i was totaly engrossed for three or four days and just finished silent hill 3 last night... theres a point in the game when the sleazy charachter (vincent) is berating your charachter (heather)... "don't look so smug your the worst person in here." he accuses her of enjoying all the killing shes been doing in the game "you get exited when you club them to death and hear their screams." (these aren't exact quotes) anyway he's chiding you for doing what you had to do to get to this point in the game... what you have to do in alot of games... kill stuff... heather tries to defend her actions by saying they were only monsters... "oh, is that what they looked like to you?" says vincent... the monsters are interchangeable, robots, enemy soldiers, it's virtual killing and we get exited...

this is a strange meta-meta thing and seems very tongue and cheek and self aware for a video game... also theres the part where your in a house of horrors in an amusement park... your in a house of horrors in a horror video game... essentialy what the game itself is... you go from room to room, from scare to scare, although theres an appearance of freedom your really confined by the items and thier functions and their interaction with certain other items... find the key, open the door, another scare.

also the importance of sound as a tool of immersion and fear is incredibly well implemented... this goes for all of the games... i remember in the first game there was a door that led into and empty room and then suddenly theres an abrupt loud and freaky sound that bleaches your skin... nothing happened... you walked into an empty room... but the sound made it significant... theres alot of throbbing gristle style background noises that give different enviroments the tension they need to be frightening... sound holds the whole enviroment together.

to be honest there was some content that was hard to follow even if you had played the other two games. they did a pretty good job of tying it up in the end so that you wouldn't feel so lost but even some of the dialogue is very confusing.

also i felt that some of the grit grom the earlier games is sort of going away. in earlier games you found weapons that related to your surroundings or that you could imagine finding in the toolshed.. hammer, crowbar, board with nail in it, kitchen knife. in this game she finds a machine gun on the floor. not very beleivable but whatever it IS a videogame. the monsters are alright exept for the numb bodies and the flying pendulums, they don't really seem to fit in. and they're the same monsters over and over which i guess is much like the old formula.

i get frustrated with these games but there are enough moments unlike any other that make me say this is the best game i've ever played... they have the crapiest controlls and a linear storyline but i can't get enough... i can't wait to see the next one which apparently primarily takes place in a single room.

The graphics are astounding with really nice textures and lighting even in this dark game. It has the best graphics for any game at this moment on the Playstation 2. It has a very dark and creepy atomosphere. Also, when you buy the game it comes with a soundtrack. The music is that good. The music is very frightening. But they do have a good rock song on their. It is the scariest game by far on the Ps2. You can adjust how hard you want the puzzles and the game play clearly that is a nice factor. You can also mealee. This makes it better then resident evil or Onimusha. Awesome buy i recommend it for everyone over 17

A little closure

The overall gameplay of Silent Hill 3 is great, with really cool bonuses. The best feature however is the fact that it is actually a sequal this time, unlike Silent Hill 2! Silent Hill 3 actually gives you some insight on the events that have transpired since the end of Silent Hill 1. Although the story is [garbage] compared to the psychological thrill ride of number 2, it is still a decent story. Another thing I didn't like was the fact that on my first play through, it only took me 4h 18m to finish. Anyway, a must buy for any Silent Hill fan. *note* you may want to play through Silent Hill 1 again before playing this game, just to refresh you on the story a little.

The silence is unnerving

If there is a game series that is actually capable of sending a shiver up my spine by its name alone its Silent Hill. I remember being so creeped out by the original that I had to set it down only to pick it up a year or so later to finish it, and as pathetic as I may seem I still have nightmares from the original game, and while the second wasn't as creepy now I have the third to leave emotional scars on me, and for that I must say thank you Konami!
As an avid horror fanatic I am always looking forward to new horror games, especially those with the titles that are known to be good. I must admit that both Resident Evil 0 and Silent Hill 2 were mildly disappointing for me as neither generated the kind of lasting scares that their predecessors achieved. When I first saw Silent Hill 3 my first reaction was "wow." Not only did it seem almost on par with the Xbox Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams, but it had surpassed Resident Evil on the art style side. I became so excited that I was starting to have nightmares again.
Finally Silent Hill 3 hit shelves, this is the first installment of the series that I didn't get used, or as a "greatest hits" title, and I'm very broke at the moment. It was well worth the money.
Silent Hill 3 doesn't quite reach the levels of creepy that the original had, but it comes pretty close, and with its superb graphics it surpasses the original in many ways. The game's story is a lot less convoluted than the second, not that the story of Restless Dreams was bad, far from it, but it was confusing at times. This time around it seems that the story was a major focus, and therefore is much clearer. One moment I liked was when Heather went to pull an object out of a dirty toilet then had an offside to the "audience" about how sick and wrong that is and how she wouldn't do it, poking fun of Silent Hill 2's wallet in the toilet. The game ties together the first two games (finally) and the overall story of this evil town is starting to come to light. I won't go into details, but lets just say that I am very eager for a fourth game, there's a lot more to be done, I think.
There are a few areas that need improvement however. This game looks great for a PS2 title, however the Xbox Silent Hill 2, and the GameCube Resident Evils still look better over all from a technical standpoint, mostly in that the images are more stable, less grainy, and feature a much higher resolution. However, this game does surpass the aforementioned titles stylistically. I only wish that this had been made for Xbox. Granted it made me glad I have a PS 2 for a change, but with as good as it looks it bugs me thinking about how much better it could have been on a more powerful machine. The PS2 controller is perfect for this type of game, however. Another area that needs to be improved is the camera. Survival horror games have been plagued with tank like movement for a long time. SH2 was one of the few to at least offer a "2D" option for those of us who like to run away with ease. However the often-awkward camera movement doesn't do the best job tracking Heather in the "2D" mode. That's not saying that the "3D" tank movement is an acceptable alternative. I'd much rather have Konami focus on improve the camera tracking for future installments. I also still miss the shadow babies and the demon children of the original. It seems that Silent Hill's only main stay is the demon nurses, as the fog of the previous installments seems to have cleared up some.
Two things I'd like to see with this series, 1st better camera tracking and an engine geared to moving in the direction you press rather than the pivoting press up to move of yore, and a remake of the original with at least SH 3 quality graphics. While 2 was decent, 3 brought us back to the thoroughly grotesque images that haunted us for months (and in my case years) after playing through the original. Like the original I have had to play with the lights on, and my nightlight keeps me warm while I hide under the covers after playing.
Horror fans everywhere, drop what you're doing and get this game now!

This Game is awsome. I never played the 2nd silent hill but i own the 1st and that was great too. Then the 3rd one came out and i bought it right away. You can tell its a great game from the minute the first scene takes place.

Graphics: I give the graphics 10 out of 10. The cut scenes are breathe takening and while you play the graphics make you feel like uts all real.
Storyline: I give storyline 10 out of 10. Its cool how the first and 3rd go together.
Gmeplay: 10 out of 10. You can play this game over and over to get new weapons, costumes, and endings!
Scariness: This game is scary! You start to feel like your Heather( the person you play in the game). As you walk through dark, damp, bloddy hallways you feel like your all tense and then when you see the monsters you get this cold feeling down your spine.
So out of all i said I give the overall game a 10 out of 10.
~~~~~~~Playing this game will be a rollercoaster ride of fun and terror~~~~~~~
geez!
This is far better than the first two, the graphics are amazing, and the lighting rivals the likes of Splinter Cell, I had trouble figuring out whether or not the Cut-scenes were using CG or in-game graphics. The graphics are the best I have ever seen on the Playstation 2. Even better than the Onimusha series! I was blown away at how graphic this was. Blood is EVERYWHERE, little footsteps appear in front of you, whispers. you could close your eyes and be just as terrified. This game has the scariest sounds and music... It's disturbing. The characters are great, the monsters are great, the bosses are EXTREMELY great, including the final boss fight which will leave you breathless.
I was blown away by this game. Screw Resident Evil, this is the way to go. oh yeah, there are tons of reasons to play this game over, a lot of unlockables including at least ten outfits, infinite bullets for the machine gun (sweet), and of course, a flamethrower!! pick this game up, you won't be dissapointed.
