... im giving it 10 stars total. Silent Hill 1, 2, & 3 could very well be the best survival horror genre out there. i also like resident evil 1 & 2 but after that the series is soooooo boring & repetetive. but R.E.4 for gamecube could change that. so as far as im concerned the S.H franchise is much better than any other survival horror genre available.

Although I thought Silent Hill 2 was the most disturbing and engrossing game of the next generation consoles, the game took a lot of criticism. I've heard it all. The game wasn't scary enough, it isn't intense enough, you never feel any real danger, the monsters are too slow and far away, the monsters never pose much of a threat, it doesn't have enough action or gameplay, it's too easy, it's not disturbing enough, it's not mean enough, it's not as demonic as the first one. These are all valid complains, and I agree with almost all of them, I hope the developers of the game improve in those areas. Silent Hill never gets boring to me, because every installment is different, the only thing that is really the same is that it's gonna try to be the darkest and most twisted tale it can. The monsters are always simular in the way of looking like deformed images.

From what I've seen in the screen shots, the game might be addressing some of these problems. First off, the monsters seem to be bigger, and you use an automatic weapon, which probably means you will need it because monsters are harder, and play more of a role. Some people think that more action in the gameplay takes away from the horror or disturbing nature. I don't agree with that, because what usually makes a game scary is it's sound and presentation, not really the gameplay. Just look at the Resident Evil games from the mid to late 90's, like Resident Evil 2 and 3 which had action but were very cutting edge and intense. Those Resident Evil games really relied on sound to scare you; they went from one extreme to the other. It was the loud crashing sound that came without warning that really scared you. Realistically Resident Evil was only as scary as how high you had the volume on your TV. That also means, that just because SH3 has more action than SH2, that doesn't mean it will be scarier, but in this case I don't think it will hurt it, if anything it might add some needed intensity to the series. Another problem with Silent Hill 2, many people thought it could have been more disturbing and gory. I've already seen a few gorier pictures in SH3, I've seen a girl being killed by one of the monsters, I've seen a dog like creature eating what looks like flesh, I've seen a dead dog served on a plate. The monsters themselves look a lot like the ones from Silent Hill 2 but in my opinion some of them do look a bit scarier. I personally would prefer reddish skinless creatures over the brown rusty looking monsters they seem to be using here. A lot of people also said that the monsters in SH2 were too slow, they came at you from too far away, they never really made you feel any danger, and they were too weak. You felt sorry for the creatures more than scared, but that was more less the approach that SH2 took altogether. This time some of the monsters in Silent Hill 3 are bigger, some are dog like creatures that can attack quicker, some of the creatures even seem to be able climb and can perhaps be a threat to attack at more sudden directions.

Like I mentioned before, Silent Hill 2 took a certain approach, the game was all about loss and depression and the end result was a seriously disturbing and engrossing feeling. Konami could easily turn the plot of Silent Hill 3, into a scary and demonic one, over the twisted and heartbreaking one used in Silent Hill 2. We will have to wait until the game is released in August to be sure.

Amazing Game collection wont be complete without it!!!!!!!!!

I believe that the Silent hill games of the past were awesome and lived up to there name. Silent hill 3 is just the same. I was able to test out the game for reasons of my own business and i came to this conclusion. The grafics are great and it still gives off an errie vibe that will make the faint hearted sleep with the lamp on for a couple of nights, but the story is kinda iffy. Some chick gets lost going shopping and msyteriusly (spellling i know) winds up in a creep town in another dimention. I dont know about u but if u want a good horror game this is ur bag, but rent it first and see if u like the story line.Even thought this will still be a game on my shelf as soon as it is publicily released.
If the rating above says 1 star its cause my computer is messed up.

Well, I had to rethink this one again... =P (3 +/- .5 stars)

This game is a 3 star title really but either loses or gains a half star depending on whether or not you've played the original Silent Hill. Since I turned to this series only recently, I had never played the PlayStation original. But having just beaten a copy of it, I've had to rethink my view on this game.

In my initial run through, I found the story tremendously confusing. It went from giving out no information at all for vast tracks of the journey and then bam! It suddenly came out with a torrent of material that I couldn't get a handle on. I had to read and reread several files trying to make sense of a story that was already told in another game. It didn't exactly help either that most of the enlightening clues revealed at the end were visual instead of textual. (One good example would be the wheelchair motif that kept reoccurring throughout the game. I had absolutely no clue why it was there until recently.)

So now, looking back, I must say two things. First, this game is somewhat flawed in that it is not a stand-alone product. Because most of the key information is assumed to be common knowledge for the game's target audience, much of the game is entirely nonsensical filler. In fact, up until you complete your trek from the shopping mall to your apartment, there is no story at all--just buildup. Second, Konami have seemingly mastered the art of "environmental horror" or the way to elicit terror from creating 3D environments that instill a sense of fear and insanity like no other game out there. They use this technique almost exclusively in this game. Unlike in Silent Hill 2 where the story played off the spooky environments, adding that little extra push over the edge, this game really doesn't try to get very creative and just shows you Hell in 3D. So for the gamer who likes eye candy and insanity, this title will give you more than a mouthful.

As far as gameplay is concerned, there are only two new things really. There is a block feature now which may have many of you cooing. Instead of just taking a hit like a man, Konami decided that, yes, in fact people do try to defend themselves when being attacked. Second, you can now assign an item (for example a health drink) to a hot key and heal with the press of an R3 push instead of awkwardly cutting to your menu every 20 seconds to down a little bit of grandpa's ol' cough syrup.

One other cool thing that doesn't always seem to be something you can rely upon is the fact that Heather's character model will now look at a door or object if it is either accessible or usable respectively. Unfortunately, sometimes it doesn't seem to respond or responds in a situation where you can't really make out what has caught Heather's attention. I think that this is a neat feature that Konami should polish up on for the next title as it makes navigating in Silent Hill so much less of a chore (seriously, why all these freakin' doors that won't open, at least mark them on the map so we don't have to waste our time!)

In terms of graphics, cinema, and in game presentation, the quality is overall sharper and more richly detailed than Silent Hill 2. The soundtrack that comes with the game is also worth a listen with some tracks being highly likable as nice mood pieces. However, most of the actual songs performed by the singer/songwriter are rather flat after a few listens. The lack of multiple endings which has been a benchmark of this series is also perplexing leaving only 3 rather unappetizing rewards for all your hard work. There are a plethora of unlockable weapons and costumes to enjoy although most of the outfits are just different textures layered onto a stock outfit.

Overall this game is a decent effort but unfortunately doesn't cover any new ground for the series and often reuses the same monsters and levels. It's not nearly as great as the hype that preceded it but for the total Silent Hill junkie, you might easily find yourself changing your pants in glee rather often, particularly when you spot all the Silent Hill 1 tie-ins. For the casual gamer, however, or for the fan who hopped onto the bandwagon late, you might want to save your money until a used copy becomes available that's more agreeable with your budget. My advice: rent before you buy, or at least rent the original and beat it before you play it-it will save you a lot of aggravation and rage later on.

One of the best Games

Okay look if you want a game that lets you run around and shot stuff go run a search for Halo or something because Silent Hill isn't for you. The Silent Hill series takes brings a Hitchcock vibe to video games where the story is as intrigue as the graphics are beautiful (in a weird sort of way). Although I think Silent Hill 3 was a low point in the series, it was shorter then the proceeding games (I took five hours to beat- but a LONG five hours), and for me it wasn't as scary as the second or the first (which I still haven't beat- I think my game might be cursed or something ;). But on it's own Silent Hill 3 is a great game that provides a mild cerebral scary that many horror games can't match.

Despite beating this game faster than i beat the first two, Silent Hill 3 is the greatest. And I was defintietly suprised to see everyone's favorite Silent Hill character, Harry Mason make a cameo. Very interesting story and groundbreaking graphics. Buy it if you are into the survival horror games.

A Brilliant and Disturbing Game

Silent Hill 3 is hands-down a great game. The first play though is dark, interesting, and exiting. The second play-though is the fault in the game. With the bonuses you recieve in the first play-though the game loses all seriousness. The second time I played, the character was dressed like a Japanese cartoon, running around with a flame thrower and a lightsaber, and I was only two minutes into the game! Aside from that I fully recomend Silent Hill 3 to anyone who's tough enough to take it.
