Best complete Tetris package ever - but not the best single player experience

What more can be said about this game? It has a host of new, interesting Tetris modes, is filled with enough Nintendo fanservice to choke even the most obsessed otaku, and brings an absolutely amazing multiplayer experience that is worth the cost of admission alone.

Rather than focus on all the wonderful aspects of this game, I will point out the one thing that it lacks. It's a problem that is often overlooked in reviews, and because of it I will not be able to give up my old copy of Tetris DX for the Game Boy Color: That one thing is a "pure" single-player Tetris experience; the kind that you slip into like a hot bath, a transcendent meditation where each block is a little piece of self-realization, where 400 lines into the game you have disappeared, the world around you has disappeared, and only the little colored shapes remain.

Achieving this kind of experience requires sticking to the original Tetris formula: The difficulty curve should allow longer playtimes and higher line counts, the blocks should fall properly, and they should stop moving properly. Tetris DS has issues on all three fronts: The difficulty curve gets insane. The primary goal of the normal single-player game is to get to 200 lines. Forget 400 -- by the time you've hit 150 lines the blocks don't fall so much as teleport into place, and the only thing that allows you to set them properly is the fact that you can rotate the blocks as much as you please before they "set". You could theoretically rotate the piece forever. The proper way to implement this is to have the blocks fall at a slower speed and have a set amount of time between when they touch the stack and when they're set. Some have called this issue a "bug" in Tetris DS, but I think it must have been a deliberate (albeit odd) design choice, because I can't see getting to 200 lines without it.

Again, this is just my attempt to point out the one thing lacking in this game, because it may be important to Tetris purists. You won't be able to play the kind of long, contemplative games you could in Tetris DX, or the original Tetris for the Game Boy. In all other respects, this is easily the best Tetris game ever made, and every DS owner should have a copy.

The best made BETTER!

Tetris has always been one of the most confoundingly addictive games. It's brilliant in its simplicity, and I've been hooked since college.

This new edition for DS adds many new levels of gameplay that all appeal to the Tetris-addicted yet add a new dimension to the fun. The best part is, the more you attack Tetris from different angles, the better you are at the classic game. Which makes for plenty of fun when you play against your friends!

That's another element of fun in this one: single-card download play, which means if you have a friend with a DS, you can play against each other even if they haven't purchased the game. It's a lot of fun and hard to put down.

If you like Tetris at all, you'll be delighted by the depth and creativity behind this new version. There is a lot of fun to be had here!

Needs co-op mode

I bought this game to play with my spouse, but it only has competitive two-player modes. We're competitive enough in real life, thanks, and what we need from our games is cooperative play, which this title doesn't seem to have. The puzzles (in single-player mode) are really fun to solve, though.

good for the new modes and Multiplayer, but not for "Standard mode" one player.

If your Looking for Just traditional tetris to play on your own, don't get this, as the "Standard" Tetris mode features a bug that lets you spin the peice at the bottom indefinately, letting you take your time in getting it to where you want, making the traditional "Endless" Mode pretty boring(I've actually diliberately ended the game myself, the few times I've played it!)
instead the best way to play standard mode is the reach 200 lines variation-you get a tour of several nintendo franchises and remixed music as you work your way up, plus a special treat on level 19 (I won't say what it is, but classic tetris fans will be plesantly surprised). plus there's a challange to beat your high score since the gameplay is capped off.

However, that being said, most of the other modes are fantastic.
Catch Mode, where you manipulate the base to catch tetriminos is much more challanging, and the "infinite spin" bug does not apply, you try to create 4 by 4 squares and get them to detonate. the more 4 by 4s you get in one charge, the higher your score will be.

Push mode is very challanging in which you try to push the computer opponite to his doom by clearing two or more lines at once. (set the CPU level at 5 and be ready for some frantic action) the infinite spin bug is useless here too, fortunately.

Touch mode is fun in that it it imploys gravity-loose blocks will continue to fall until they hit a surface, leading the player to set up combos to clear multiple lines by this and rack up a high score. the main differance is that you manipulate blocks allready settled by using the touch screen.
Touch Screen puzzle is pretty chalanging, although sometimes a bit too much. you use the touch screen to Manipulate Non-rotatable blocks to finish the objective
the other puzzle mode where you choose peices to fall and clear all the lines on the screen is a little boring.

Mission mode is fun at first, but virtually impossible on the higher levels.

That's pretty much all I have to say. If you pick up Tetris Worlds for GBA and put it in your DS at the same time with Tetris DS, you'll have access to a total of 10 differant variations, along with the classic style "Standard mode" wothout the infinite spin Bug.

I'm an old school video game player, I still have My Sega, and 2 gameboys. Ya they still work. Collectible; ya never know. Anyway, I bought the Nintendo DS for my son (8) he never got it. I have 4 games for myself, this is one of them and my wife Plays the game all the time. She is up to 104 lines. I guess you could say that maybe i need to buy another DS for my wife and one for my son. HUmmm maybe i will get my DS back so i can play Mario....hahaha.. I'm 40 and my wife is 37 as of this review. The game rocks.... lots of fun....even for the old school gamer.

This game is pretty easy. I enjoyed it. The action going on the top screen is kind of distracting at first.
