Not a bad game, if you have the HD Space (850 megs)

Rustin Parr is a pretty alright game....Play it in the dark, at night, and I guarantee a scare... It does take up alot of hard disk space, though.... The whole game loads onto your hard drive, so do like I did....install it, take it back for a refund, and play til your heart's content...for free.. It is a pretty good game though....I never played nocturne....Overall, a game worth playing, especially if you are a Blair witch fan.

My first impressions of this game were NOT good. The training thing [is] real bad, but its worth it in the end!! This is a very scary game! I thought Resident Evil 2 was good, and it is... but, this is the iceing on the cake. I think that this did very well in tying in the blair witch theory's. There were not made up stories... everything is fact from the books and the movie. I reccomend this not only to lovers of the film, But horror film lovers and game lovers also. Once again... your first impression may not be good but it won't last long! I took a star off for the basic reasons that it takes quite awhile to master the movements and is a little too hard a little too soon. Other than that, BUY IT!

Great creepy atmosphere, but decidedly lacking in terms of gameplay

I've had the three Blair Witch computer games ever since I bought The Blair Witch Experience set several years ago, but I've never really taken any of them for a spin until now. Given the pathetic nature of the second movie, I had to wonder what kind of content might be stretched across three whole games. The Rustin Parr case makes a natural choice for the first volume, as it's really the most visceral and disturbing part of the fictional Blair Witch legend. You all remember Rustin Parr - the guy who killed seven kids in his basement, walked to Burkittsville to announce he was finally finished, and testified that the Blair Witch made him do it. You don't actually get to meet Rustin Parr in this game, but you do sort of follow in his footsteps.

In many ways, so they say, this is a sequel to Nocturne. It uses the Nocturne engine and borrows the character of Elspeth "Doc" Holliday, a sort of pre-X-files agent investigating weird stuff for the "Spookhouse." After a rather annoying but somewhat helpful tutorial-type workout at home base, you (as Holliday) are dispatched to Burkittsville to see if there's anything to the whole Blair Witch story or not. It's 1941, just after Parr's arrest, and you have to explore the town, interview townsfolk, and - of course - explore the dark forests where evil is said to lurk. The locals are rather tight-lipped and pretty darn lacking in personality, and your contact with them mostly consists of cut scenes - so there's not much challenge there. You'll spend most of your time in the forest, which can be rather mazelike. I don't know why computer game makers think we enjoy wandering around lost in a maze so much, but there you go.

You do get to kill things, though. Since you can't go around shooting the residents of Burkittsville (unfortunately), the game makers came up with the idea of zombies, wild dogs, and stick creatures wandering the forests. It's quite a stretch, really, as the whole Blair Witch thing sort of fades into the background of ancient Indian folklore (as recounted by a strange Indian living in the dark forest). Clearly, gameplay and story depth are not this game's major strengths.

What makes the game interesting and, in its own little way, somewhat impressive is the atmosphere provided by the Nocturne engine. The look of the game is quite effective, as are the sounds. As you walk through the forest, your ears are treated to the sounds of the leaves crunching under your feet and the eerie sounds of children's voices somewhere off in the distance (some of whom are calling for help), while ghost-like images of children as well as beasts pop in and out of your sight. The creepiness multiplies when you get the chance to explore the infamous Parr house, where shadows of children suddenly appear in the corners before fading away before your very eyes. None of this is going to make you start calling for your Mommy, but there is a definite level of creepiness to this otherwise bland gaming experience.

In the end, though, the lack of challenging gameplay (and all the ridiculous wandering around in the forest trying to find your way) trumps the creepy atmosphere. There's just too little to do, with too little payoff for your time and effort. Different camera angles make for awkward control at times, and the third-person perspective keeps you from really being drawn into the action. The ending is particularly blasé, and so it is that I must declare The Blair Witch Volume 1: Rustin Parr a decidedly average gaming experience.

Just so everyone knows...

You can pick up all three games, along with both movies and a stickman necklace for around $7 (used, of course). Just run a search for The Blair Witch Experience in DVDs.

Waste of time and money

I bought this game hoping that it would be everything I had read in the reviews. It isn't. It is EXTREMELY hard to control and the easiest tasks become frustrating. - I can now use it as a not-so-expensive drink coaster. Don't waste your time or money.

PC Gaming doesn't get better than this

Ladies and Gentlemen, finally I have been impressed, I mean truly impressed by a PC game. This game has it all, graphics to knock the socks off (flowing trenchcoats, moving facials features, camera angles that create a horror movie-like feel, real-time BEAUTIFUL lighting effects), an intriguing storyline that follows, but is not hindered by, the movies. Great voice acting (wow, that's a first), interesting NPC characters and sound effects that rival anything I've heard make this game not just worth buying, but worth playing over and over. I am not ashamed to say that sitting home alone playing this game, I jumped at points and was really scared. Never has a game reached quite this level, Nocturne on speed folks, that's what this game is....kudos Gathering of Developers.

First of all I'd like to say that this is by far the best adventure game since Resident Evil. If you like playing games like Resident Evil 1 or 2, You will love this game. There were points in the game were I was at the edge of my seat for almost an hour straight. When you play this game, MAKE SURE YOU TURN OFF ALL THE LIGHTS AND MAKE SURE ITS NIGHT TIME!!! Oh! And turn up the sound. Ive never been scared while playing a game before. NEVER!!!!!......well...until I played this game that is. Scarier than the movie. DAMN! Oh, did I mention it's very fun too. The only thing I didnt care for is the cheesey tutorial.

SCARRRRYYYYY!!!!!!

I bet everyone reading this already knows the whole point of the game. The makers of the game Nocturne are using the same engine and character (a mysterious man named Stranger who's a detective that fights monsters) to explore the legends of the Blair Witch. They're releasing three games that are of three different parts of the legend. But be warned. I am a blair witch fanatic and bought Nocturne to see what the game may look like. But to play it, it takes up 1 megabyte of space! You also need over a 100 megs of RAM. I have a really bad computer and if you do to, look before buying Nocturne products. Other than the space and speed it takes up, the game should be as awesome as Myst!

It is funny to read some of these idiot reviews

Funny,

those who say it is like the movie are wrong. It deals with the history not kids in the woods. The person saying that it is a Nocturne mod and that the Stranger is the main character is wrong. Doc Holiday is the character. The person siting 1GB of storage and 100MB of RAM is wrong - that was for Nocturne. Blair Witch has lower system requirements. The only right thing to say is that the game is scary, interesting, and has a great storyline. The heck with the buy Quake, etc. comments. If you like a good story, and lots of eye candy, this is a great game for just $19.95.
