This game is Far better than the movie

First let me say that I did not like the Blair Witch movie. I thought it was a waste of my money to the extreme. If I want to watch 3 kids yell at each other for an hour I have siblings. If I did not get this as a gift I would not have bought it. However I am in love with this game. I can not remember being so scared playing a game in a long time. It is moody, scarey, and makes me want to turn on all the lights. If you like serious horor get this game.

I have played many horror games and definately feel that "blairwitch 1" scores heavy over other horror games.the game is set on the 1941 legend of rustin parr who had murdered 7 children and claimed he had done it for a ghostwoman.the excellent atmosphere and graphics make this game realy spooky.though it doesnt have the best controls,it is a must buy for horror and blairwitch fans like me.i would rate it much higher than the other two blairwitch games.so if u want to visit burkitsville woods, this is definatelty the east way...

poor gameplay spoils a great subject

As a fan of the movie, I had high hopes for this game, but they didn't pan out. Not quite a true port - "Rustin Parr" is more of a cross-over between the BWP franchise and "Nocturne".

In the game, you play Elspeth "Doc" Holliday, a sort of gun-wielding investigator for a super-secret government organization of the 1940's - one introduced in "Nocturne". With its own simulator room, the agency trains agents like Holliday to take on missions involving the supernatural (what we now call "paranormal") phenomenon. Inevitably, Holliday's superiors have become drawn to the case of "Rustin Parr", a recluse who killed a group of children near his hometown of Burkittsville (formerly "Blair"), Maryland in a psychotic rage in 1941. Parr vaguely attributed his crimes to prodding by the legendary Elly Kedward (aka "The Blair Witch"). (Parr's story was told in the movie, and it's apparently his creepy house in which the final, cryptic scenes of the film play out.) The premise of the game sort of clashes with the original's movie's selling point - which was to keep us wondering about whether these supernatural elements were genuine no atter how obvious it was they were.

I gotta confess that I couldn't get past the start-up level. The game ran smoothly, as far as hardware is concerned, on my old Pentium 4 (at this stage, hardware specs are your least worry), but gameplay itself was a major hassle. Using the "Nocturne" game engine, you maneuver Holliday in 3rd person. Only, unlike other "shooters" - 3rd or 1st person, game perspective isn't fixed to the character, but to a room - set pieces through which your character enters & exits. This allows for nice looking scenes (since your PC doesn't have re-render the backgrounds to compensate for movement) but extremely static ones. It also makes it harder to confront threats and position yourself for such esoteric acts as opening doors or picking up objects. This made for extremely frustrating gameplay from the very first level. I got fed up just trying to navigate the simulator room, and decided to make the game vanish from my HD. Recently, I thought I'd give the game a second chance, yet all I've found is the CD sleeve...

Not worth the shipping

This game is ridiculous- I couldn't even finsish it. In fact, I barely started it. It's obviously just a ripoff of all the Blair Witch hype from a few years ago- a movie I love. Disappointing.

A Must Have for Horror Video Game Fans

After reading several reviews for this game (both here and in other publications), I was prepared for disappointment. What a surprise it was then to find that this game is intelligent, beautifully designed (yes, even with the much maligned Nocturne engine), and legitimately scary. The game, like the movie, generates fear not from direct confrontation (though there is a great deal of that), but from anticipation. The game, with it's vulnerable main character, skewed camera angles and unsettling sound effects, sets the player up for quite a few good frights and a constant feeling of dread. The developers at Terminal Reality have created a superb game with wonderful atmosphere and a great storyline. The only major fault with the game is the awkward controls. I have found though, that if you take a couple minutes to customize the keys to your own comfort, this problem can be overcome. This is the best horror game I have played since Resident Evil 2.

Truly Scary

Despite the critics, the gameplay of Blair Witch is certainly improved over Nocturne. The game is truly scary. The graphics and the sounds add an eerie element that is awesome. After playing the demo, I think it will be the best horror game to date. Download it and see for yourself.

This is a must buy.

Great game. I'm a fan of the movie and of Nocturne, and this game delivers. The controls were much improved from Nocturne which made it easier to become immersed in the game and follow the top notch storyline. Highly recommened if you are a horror buff as well.

When I began playing Rustin Parr I didn't like the game because of the controls and the camera angles. But after playing it and getting use to the system, the game became fascinating. I'm a person who loves horror things, so it takes a lot to scare me. This came has accomplished that! It's hair-raising spooky! The storyline of the game is excellent also. I only gave it 4 stars because of the controls, camera view, and it takes a while to load the next level, but the rest makes up for it. It is a great game once you get the feel of how it works! Play it and you'll think twice about the dark!

Rustin Parr reaches new heights of creepiest for the genre

At first glance, Rustin Parr looks like it should be passed off as a joke. The intro to the game is odd and far from what you would expect from a blair witch title. Get past the intro and the game picks up drastically. To be honest, the game suffers a lot from it's oblvious beginnings. In fact, it seems some of the game (namely the beginning) was developed before acquiring it's "Blair Witch" license. You start off in a secret underground government headquarters known as "Spookhouse" as FBI agent Doc Holiday. Doc Holiday is a an attractive young detective who is being guided and directed by a military leader and some-sort of kirate sensei. First impressions are not on the side of this one. Why is there a sensei when Doc Holiday does not in anyway use any form of martial arts in the game. This just adds to the out of place and irrevelance factors that infect the game's initial impression. The game pushes you into a room of confusion and frustration. This inevitability makes you want to instantly put the game down and walk away. Goofy controls, choppy animations, and meaningless chatter amongst characters puts you in a dreadful disposition. Horror takes a new meaning. The intro was designed to give you a feel for the controls of the game but seems far distant in it's relation to the rest of it. Choppy animation plagues the beginning and settles it's way all the way through. Buggy and just careless. Some tweaking with keyboard configuration and mouse sensitivity are necessary in order to master the controls. And some monitor adjustments with brightness and contrasts are also required in order to get the proper "fix". Get past the intro and you are on you way into a very satisfying title. Burkittsville, the town in which Rustin Parr resides, is where all the fun begins and really where the game should have started. Your assignment is to investigate the murders of 6 children who were all mutiliatted by a really small town hermit Rustin Parr in his basement (sound familiar?). The small town of Burkittsville, Maryland seems to be the perfect scene for this horror-inflicted blair witch project. Minor frustrations remain but the enticing creepiness and story leave you drawn to the game's gravitional pull. And you won't be able to put it down until it leaves you hanging for Volume II.
Gameplay lacks much in controls and action. Combat with the dead is more of an annoyance than actual fun. Combat is more of a chore routine to progress to the real awards: Revealing storyline and entriguing puzzles. And that's exactly what makes up for the clumsy controls and weak combat, the intense progression of storyline and the appropriate level of challenging puzzles.
Also, the environments will leave you sweating at the edge of your seat. It's the scariest, creepiest game I ever played resembling authentic north-eastern Fall landscape. The subtle crackle of the woods with dynamic lighting and shadows are enough to mess with your head. Add in the cries of children in the distance and you have one terrifying title that emulates it's theatrical counterpart. When you lose your way in these woods, you really feel lost and desperate to get back. Despite clumsy controls and combat, the daemons, zombies, ghosts, and creatures in this game all add to the intensity with their haunting animations, creepiness, growls, and sneakiness. The town itself is enough make your heart thump faster against your chest with it's small town eccentric attitude and feel. And characters of the town are very dynamic which adds to the overall story and dimensional texture. Getting caught up in the hauntings of Rustin Parr is what makes this game. So turn out the lights and enjoy this thrill ride.

Can you say "Nocturne MOD"?

I am a huge fan of Blair Witch and I can't believe soo many people still put down that movie to this day. Blair Witch is a excellent Survival Horror on the big screen. The entire essense of Blair Witch is spooky and draws you in like a moth to a flame.

Until now...

From the creators who gave you the "Coaster of the year" comes another ridiculous game based on the series. Why they would even pervert the Blair Witch with the Nocturne Engine is beyond me. I have to admit the demo was very spooky walking around in the house, but the min I had to battle near-invisible demons, I was completely turned off by the game. If anyone remembers Nocturne, the game flopped tremedously despite all the hype the produced before the release. Now don't get me wrong, Nocturne has a very interesting storyline, but the gameplay is HORRIBLE! Highly Excessive PC requirements limit the number of gamers who can play it, or much less want to play it! The Quake III engine far surpasses the Nocturne engine. And now they are trying once again to sell you Nocturne disquised under a Blair Witch title. This is completely obsurd.

The game they should have made was a survival horror game without weapons or they Spook House characters. A game where you have to solve puzzles to gain information all the while running from wierd noises and unseen monsters. That is the game I wanted to play, kinda of like Silent Hill with no guns, because in most parts of Silent Hill you did not have to kill the monsters. Now with this game coming out, you will have to deal with Extreme PC Requirements, watch a rerun of Home Improvement load times and basically a Nocturne game Mod under a different title.

GOD - Gathering of Developers, please take note and leave all aspects of Nocturne out of the next Blair Witch games. It will be bad enough to see this game for sale on Ebay a couple of days after it comes out.
