Classic Arcade Games on Your PC

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 47 / 48

This disc will be a definite must have if, like me, you wasted great amounts of time as a young person playing the games on this disc in their original arcade versions. You will find yourself idling away the hours once again with the following classics: Pac Man, Ms. Pac Man, Dig Dug, Galaxian and Pole Position.

I must admit that I have yet to play Pole Position as I do not possess a joy stick and said device seems crucial to worthwhile play on this game. The same can be said of Galaxian also, but I have nonetheless had fun with this Space Invaders variation.

I purchased this disc primarily for the two Pac Man games but was surprised to find Dig Dug emerging as a favorite. Each of the games included here is identical to the classic arcade version (although I could swear you were allowed more free "lives" in the original versions of Pac Man, Ms. Pac Man and Galaxian, all of which reward only one extra per game here).

All in all, a solid disc that will provide much entertainment.

Crude graphics, but sophisticated fun!

I can't believe there's a review from someone who complains that the arcade games in this set have crude graphics. No kidding, but if you were a teenager in the 80s, these are among the sweetest sights and sounds you'll ever know. For every one of us who looked forward to the home version of Pac-Man in the 80's, only to get the lackluster, bland, and even cruder Atari 2600 version, this is sweet revenge. You can finally play the actual game in your house. And somehow, each time you play, the taste of New Coke, or the sounds of Hall & Oates or Michael Jackson seem to come along into your mind. Don't be surprised if you start wondering if you have time to finish your algebra homework. It takes you back to high school in the 80s. Maybe if you weren't around back then, you can't appreciate it. But for me, I'd rather sit and watch these crude shaped ghosts chase Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man than those supposedly more sophisticated versions of the games that were recently released. They may have superb graphics, but they lack the most important thing... charm!

These games bring back some GREAT memories!

How many of my quarters supplemented the diet of a dot-munching yellow creature? How many hours did I spend tunnelling under the ground, battling creatures named "Pooka" and "Fygar"? The five games on this CD-ROM--"Pac-Man," "Ms. Pac-Man," "Dig-Dug," "Galaxian" and "Pole Position"--were impossible to resist in the video arcades. Even when newer, more sophisticated games came along, I still found myself drawn to these straightforward, yet wonderfully addictive games. They're all coin-op classics, and deservedly so.

Twenty years later, they're back, and they all look, sound and play just the way I remember them. If you played these games in the arcades, you remember how much fun they were. If you grew up playing a later generation of games, do yourself a favor and discover the magic of these classics.

One drawback: A few of these games--"Pac-Man" in particular--can be awkward to control using directional keypad buttons, unless you're really adept with them (I'm not.) My suggestion: Get a joystick, if you don't already have one. It will add immensely to the "in the arcade" feeling and enhance your enjoyment of these wonderful games.

BEWARE! Does not work on Windows 2000

I just bought this as a present, but, although it is made by Microsoft, unbelievably it does not run on Windows 2000! So the person who received it has not been able to try it out. How could Microsoft possibly do that? Also, a more prominent warning to that effect should be placed on the Amazon add.

That being said, it is probably very fun, but I have to put 1 star -- because of what Microsoft has done here, we have not been able to try it out!

I've really enjoyed playing most of the games in this package. There are just two things which diminish my enjoyment. One is that I have to reset my "Settings" mode on my computer to a 256 bit color setting. Otherwise the games don't work properly. The second is that I need to purchase a joystick because I just can't get the Pac Man and Mrs. Pac Man to work with just the arrow direction keys - I'm not too adept with those keys when speed is required. I love Pole Position. Have lots of fun times with that one. I have tried Dig game, but again I think a joystick will make it easier. Good buy. Lots of hours of FUN!

P.S. NO WAITING

Watch out on Win 98 w/DirectX 8.1

Even though I have 256 Mb, I have found this one to be quite flaky under Windows 98. It randomly fails to load games properly under DirectX 8.1, which then procede to eat system resources until the system crashes. MS has been unable to resolve the problem (and, the first time, the registration # it gave me was faulty and they wanted me to pay for support, had to re-install and get a new # before I could even get them to acknowledge my existance w/o a credit card...). Even when the games do work, they are generally poor adaptations. For much better emulation, get MAME and download the original game ROMS at www.mame.dk. Sorry for the sour grapes. Expect that those running later versions of Windows or earlier versions of DirectX might be in better shape.

Arcade started from the classic games.

If you grew up in the 80's you can't go wrong with these games. These games were the best and highly rated back then. I remember going to the arcade centers waiting in line for a turn to play theses games. The classic arcade games are the original start of arcade games trend,You have to respect that, if it wasn't for theses original games that started the arcade trend where would we be. I only play the classic games and nothing else. I have nothing against the new age games today, even though they are more enchanced, but there are just to many buttons and gadget you have to use to play the game, I can't keep up with
all those different buttons to play. I just like it simple. Its so much fun. I love the classic games and finally found them on a cd rom.

Great Fun

Some arcade games became monotonous after a while. These never did.
